And then maybe GPersonality? So Google can know exactly how we all act.
And then maybe GBrainScan? So that Google can use its vast processing power to figure out how to read my mind.
1984, here we come! - flintmich, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Choice is good. More choice.
Competition is GOOD not BAD. Paypal has a horrible reputation amongst a lot of users, and people suffer through it as Paypayl is owned by eBay and tied in pretty well.
However, Google still has this hippie, friendly atmosphere about them that make people believe that they could work there, and if so, the people must not be so bad. I enjoy Google's whole array of products and services (when they screwed up on Video, they made fixes fast and got back on track) because they work as expected and don't "mess" with me.
I hope their gBuy system is fun and easy to use and with Mayer at the helm it most likely will be. - nesune, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2kinda off topic but i just gotta point this out.....g-buy actually means the women reproductive organ in chinese.....gave me a laugh to see it on the front page...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I find it sad that any company that Google, solely a large company-base, has to worry about it's earned ground because Google has an interest in it. PayPal is a great service and I think it deserves the fees it applies, and I'll be both happy but more saddened that a company like PayPal has to stoop low just to compete with Goliath.
- nstern2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Google is slowly taking over the world...
...Im Scared. - clevershark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1From Google Video search:
>Your search - matador waving the red cape did not return any results<
Sorry, NoMoreNicksLeft. - jinexile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1crispy if you have a gmail account there's a good chance google already has that information.
- stephenguna77, on 04/27/2009, -0/+1Nearly both are the same.... ;-)

I agree. For once, there are good guys to cheer for. Paypal is somewhere between lawyers and politicians on my spectrum of slimeballs, and if Google can do even a tenth as well at online payments as they do everything else, I hope paypal burns to the ground.
On video though, why does everyone think it's a failure? For one, they're not working on sucking the MPAA's dick, they're going for something far more comprehensive. Pretty much the archival of *all* video clips on the internet, is my guess. Wouldn't surprise me if you were looking for a clip of a matador waving the red cape, and google video is able to deliver just that, via keywords.
And as far as the interface, simpler is better. I get tired of websites that overdo it. - superdigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1what the hell is going on. are these guys gonna get slapped with an anti-trust suit anytime soon? i really don't care, personally, but it seems like it's long overdue. and what's everyone got against paypal? works fine for me.
- mobbydick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2the names google gives their product are so stupid, and lately the products have sucked too.
- BritOverseas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I dont knwo why everyone is all pissed off with PayPal. I have never had a single problem with them, have easily found their phone number on their own site, spoke to a representative very promptly, was given all the info I needed. I just don't get it..."
Oh of course, Ebay and Paypal are so trustworthy. I tried to sell my laptop on Ebay and apart from the OBVIOUS fraudsters trying to get is shipped to Africa for "their sons student studies", I eventually sold it to a Russian guy, paid with paypal from a verified U.S account, and, to be shipped to an address in the States. When some other fishy stuff started to go on I decided to do a bit of checking and called the owner of the email address. Turns out that her credit card had been phished her Paypal account, credit cards and Ebay account and she knew nothing about it.
I reoprted this to Ebay/Paypal, they IMMEDIATELY deducted the cash from my account, PLUS their fees (cheeky bastards), locked MY account and I didn't hear anything about it for weeks. If I hadn't been vigilant, her credit card company would have charged me back and I would have lost all, Paypal would not have cared less. Also, it took them 2 MONTHS to investigate and give me back full control of my account.. THEY BLOW
I for one would welcome some other form of minipayment scheme, go Google. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Any company can make a better service than Paypal, all you have to do is pay attention to your customers and not freeze their account forever without any notice or refund.
Paypal is lame. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1they would be stupid not to try. especially since it will give their users easy ways to pay for their added content.. google books.. video.. adsense. They do need another source of revnue other than adsence.
- crispytown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here Google.... these are my Credit Card number, bank acocunt info, SS number, and all my personal info.... JUST KIDDING!
You will never get that info. Damn Google for this lame service that they think is cool. Go back to being a search engine thank you. - minchin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In some Chinese dialect, "GBUY" sounds like "pussy".... Yes, the "V" word....
Try to chant this word repeatedly in Taiwan or Singapore... - FallenSeraph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Unless it's goverened by the FDIC, I won't use it.
Same reason why I don't use Paypal.
Surely everyone hasn't forgot what Paypal did to Somethingawful.com's Katrina Fund? - ecchichuu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I welcome the competition and hope it encourages paypal to improve their service.
- ShowsIWatchCom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0While it's impressive that Google has so much going on, I also think they're moving too fast and not thinking things through before opening a new sector of business. Someone here mentioned Google Video as an example, and I'm inclined to agree. It will be interesting to see how well GBuy does, though.
- zarand, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1one word: ebay
- Burmask, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Let's hope the TOS for gBuy allow for charge disputes or charge backs. Let's face it, ebay is full of fraud and when PayPal is used for an eBay transaction a consumer cannot refute the charge if they were sent pixie dust instead of a new mini mac. Huh? Yes, that's right. It's not the same as Visa or Master Card, so let's hope gBuy is.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The problem with Google is they are rolling out many new features, and doing a half-assed job on them all.
Case in Point: Google Video. No wonder CBS dropped them from iTunes. - noneloud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0At least the first letter isn't lowercase.
eBay....gBuy Both really similar - Barnstormer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I predict they'll start an adult entertainment service called GString.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Go G!
- theone3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wonder whether this will work. eBay inc. has a MASSIVE ad contract with Google.
- adoni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wait for GBuy
- miccheng, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sorry... it sounds like a vulgar word in a Chinese dialect (Hokkien).
- snowboarder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0just because some of googles products arnt the best doesnt mean other people dont like them. They can't have every product be up to everyones expectations, the people who complain about google just wish they had the money google was making. So what if google knows your *****, they can't legally ***** you over. So drop the "oh my identity sob stories".
- jinexile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0snap, I agree. While I am becoming concerned about the amount of information Google has on me, I don't really care because I'm not doing anything illegal. Paypal screwed me over (locked my account and refused to transfer funds to pay for christmas presents I was trying to buy because I had recently moved and I didn't have a civil address only a PO Box)
- elvisisdead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Agreed with Fallen. Not only the FDIC, but they need to be regulated like a bank. That means when I request funds from my paypal account, they can't delay it by 3 days in order to cull interest on my money. Personally, I'd much rather do business through a postal money order. The fees are WAY less, and in the instance of fraud, etc. it's MUCH harder to fake the money order.
- PaulGthink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey, a little Google paranoia is a good thing but 1984???
This all too often comes from Microsoft users who forget that MSN Search handed your info to the feds without question along with your MS Wallet info, blocked Chinese searches long before Google got into the market and gave source code to the Communist Chinese even though they won't share it with the American user.
Yup - Evil old Google Corporation, I don't think so - PvUtrix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Paypal is useless, they suspended my account without giving any reasons and they keep sending me template emails on all my requests for clarification... can't wait for google to roll out their payment system...
- daduke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Why would banks do the same????
They would make more money, and you would not have much more problem with another company, since you already have trouble with your banking company ;) - zeeone, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Die, Paypal, die!
- whalesalad, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I dont knwo why everyone is all pissed off with PayPal. I have never had a single problem with them, have easily found their phone number on their own site, spoke to a representative very promptly, was given all the info I needed. I just don't get it...
- lo0ol, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Is anyone else just sitting back in mild amusement at how anti-Google techies have become compared to two years ago? I know I am.
- Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"STOP with all this ***** "XXXX Killer" garbage. Almost NO upstart business expects to take all the market share away from the dominant current company. And ZERO of them actually will."
Let's see....
Google Search pwnd Yahoo! Search
GMail pwnd (Every free email service out there)
Google Groups absorbed Deja
Google's Froogle pwnd MySimon
Need I go on? - snapcase, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I love reading all the responses from the paranoid people thinking that Google is going to steal all of their info and possibly take over their minds. If they make a service that is better than paypal, I'd use it. I'd be willing to use whichever has the better service.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Any chance this will enable anonymous transactions?
- grambones, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2how is this on the f-ing front page? its bull *****
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1
I really hope Google makes PayPal pay. Yes, that pun was intentional. I want PayPal to bleed and PayPal executives committing Hari Kari - heinouskyle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I think Google is definitely one to keep an eye on. Who knows just how much power they will eventually gain.
Funny, just as I started writing this comment, the GMail page fails to load. - j0c1f3r, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1http://www.paypalsucks.com/
- ricky1146, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Am i the only google supporter here? I do admit i am a google bitch. I use everything google.
- potatodemon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0The co-founder of paypal had this to say in an interview on nerd tv.
Bob: Yes. Now, you talked about catching a wave. With PayPal, you certainly caught a wave. And in a moment we'll get to talking about the things you're doing now, and presumably there you perceive waves that you're trying to catch. What about a wave that may have passed? Like, is it possible for someone else to start another PayPal today? Or is that opportunity gone?
Max Levchin: I'm not sure. So Google was recently talking smack. - striker1211, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0"I dont knwo why everyone is all pissed off with PayPal. I have never had a single problem with them, have easily found their phone number on their own site, spoke to a representative very promptly, was given all the info I needed. I just don't get it..."
I think they were forced to offer their phone number. Isn't it still a long distance call? It is surely a long distance number to ask for help with my paypal mastercard. - mycatsboots, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Paypal is an electronic incarnation of Satan himself. Actually, Paypal is so bad, it might be Satan with a hint of lime.
