- theone3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Alexa is not representative of actual traffic tho. It's just based on a piece of spyware which anyone with 1/2 a brain would remove.
- Mike89, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Exactly. So more idiots use Google than MSN now.
And Alexa don't "report" this, they just have dynamic graphs and you happened to notice the change :P - whistle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was waiting for this to happen for sometime now.. a better link might be,
http://traffic.alexa.com/graph?w=800&h=640&r=50m&y=t&u=google.com/&u=msn.com - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2hmmmm, I wonder what scared away all those Alexa users from msn. Anyways, not very meaningful, since it reflects the traffic by folks who've chosen to be tracked by Alexa.
- ruiner5000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would not call Alexa accurate. In fact it is easily manipulated.
- whistle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1probably because of this, and video.google.com traffic,
http://traffic.alexa.com/graph?w=800&h=640&r=50m&y=r&u=google.com/&u=msn.com - teamparadox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does anyone find it off in the way the traffic dropped off? Something is fishy about these results. It looks like every MSN user went to google at exactly the same time which...just wouldnt happen in the real world.
- xalax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'd rather be tracked by Ranking.com
- stutheidiot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1teamparadox - It's a graph of Rank, not Traffic
- Mwd500, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1MSN just rush out services, Ive nothing against them but nothing of theirs works well and they never have time to fix it because they are moving to make something else in a hurry.
- saysaknow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Who uses MSN? I never heard of it until like 2 years ago.
- pt4117, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1MSN is not the home page for all new Windows Machines. Every HP I get has HP as the homepage, I've only had a couple of dozen Gateways (all the same model number) but they all had gateway as the home page. When my mom just got setup w/ a new ISP (comcast) it changed her homepage to Comcast. Plus how many people that have Alexa had their homepage hijacked.
I think people are looking too hard at the MSN as the default home page thing. - Dhalgren, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Do they count people who just have MSN.com as homepage because they never changed it in IE?"
Most likely. That is a "hit" for msn.com regardless of whether the first thing the person does is type in www.google.com in the address bar. - apotropaic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is great considering that all new installs of windows point IE straight to MSN by default! That is why I never really considered MSN numbers to be realistic or fair. A lot of new computer you buy in stores or online also do the same. Good of google... cause no too many computer point to google automatically!
- dragonmortal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I also wonder how many google users clean their computers regularly. I imagine a lot of google users would not be able to be counted so easily.
- ruiner5000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0our alexa rating bounces up and no in no relation to our traffic per our logfiles, or google analytics.
http://www.alexa.com/data/details/traffic_details?q=&url=http://www.amdzone.com/ - jafojsharp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Awesome, considering every New Windows Xp installation defaults MSN.com as the home page for IE. Now if only Firefox surpassed IE we would live in a semi-perfect world. :-)
- fullcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Alexa is *****, it ranks sites by spying on people who use their toolbar, not very accurate. Not to mention google.com.au google.co.uk are considered seperate sites, joined together would be much bigger.
- robche, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0alexa is only accurate if it shows digg gaining on slashdot duh!
- kris2pe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is so old news nobody uses MSN especially their crappy search engine!!!
- elfguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I thought MSN was like last after Google and Yahoo for search traffic. Do they count people who just have MSN.com as homepage because they never changed it in IE?
- spacebar14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The only thing I use Microshaft for is MSN so I can talk to my homies. That's it.
Personalized Google.com homepage with Gmail ;) - xeeton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0First 9-11, then Dale Earnheardt Jr., now this?!! What's the world coming to?!?!!
- jiub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Check out the top 500, it's still yahoo-msn-google.
http://www.alexa.com/site/ds/top_500 - dude3609, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0they also past up yahoo.com recently accordingly to alexa
http://www.alexa.com/data/details/traffic_details?&range=3m&size=medium&compare_sites=yahoo.com&y=r&url=google.com#top - ,,|,_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0LINK CORRECTION:
Google Surpasses MSN in Traffic.... for users dumb enought to install the Alexa Spybar. - StickyDragon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can't believe this didn't happen 2-3 years ago!?! I assumed that Google was the #1 search engine. Don't forget that MSN is the default start page for IE, and a lot of people probably don't bother to change it.
- pauly1980, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0id much rather not be tracked at all... you can't observe without affecting ;)
- acidronin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't like either one quite frankly.
- supergeorgina, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Goddamn right.
- dragonmortal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Even though i know how to type google.com in the URL i sometimes go to msn.com and search for google just to piss them off.
- 2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This "story" means absolutely nothing.
1) This only measures traffic created by visitors who have the Alexa bar installed which pretty much excludes Firefox users. http://pages.alexa.com/exec/faqsidos/help/index.html?index=127
2) Got to http://www.microsoft.com/ and hover over a link. Every link on the Microsoft homepage goes through MSN.com so that will skew the results.
3) Sometimes, no matter what the homepage is set to, IE will take you to Windows Update through MSN.com (like the Microsoft.com links do) to make sure your computer is updated regardless of your automatic update settings.
4) MSN search is crap, and this is coming from a Microsoft evangelist. - kamizu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0description |di'skripshen| :
noun
1. a spoken or written representation or account of a person, object, or event
learn how to ***** write one, dammit. - vdxc, on 09/29/2008, -0/+0the article links to rank, going to http://www.alexa.com/data/details/traffic_details?&range=6m&size=large&compare_sites=msn.com&y=p&url=google.com shows the page views, and msn it still higher.
- theOster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0FYI - I just received a new latitude for my boss and i go through the usual clean up/reinstall. And the default homepage is now google.com. they also have google desktop running by default (which i'm not a fan of, but to see something other than MS on a dell out-of-the-box machine is pretty bizarre to say the least.
- BlackPhantom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thank you lord!
- teamparadox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ahhh I was under the impression that ranked meant traffic since thats what the alexa code is suppose to gather...
Also I didnt know google had all the porn in the world for free, are they trying to compete with empornium now? - mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The way Alexa works, it counts subdomains as traffic too. So even though Google definitely gets the most search requests, it probably won't get past Yahoo! for a bit because Yahoo has a huge amount of services.
- peterthegreat4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0on the main alexa page it still has yahoo, msn, google.
and msn isnt the default homepage for windows, but it is the default IE search engine. - teck0brain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Uhh...yeah. That's pretty much assumed
- Abyss_908, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah I mean google gets over a billion searches a day. It's obvious.
- pksynths, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Yeah I mean google gets over a billion searches a day. It's obvious."
It does?? Last time I checked it was around 65 million. 1 billion is alittle far fetched.
-PK - LazyBoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0would have thought this happned a long time ago.
- pixelwerx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I'd rather be tracked by Ranking.com"
Are you kidding? Ranking.com is crap.
Their "Trust Gauge" is a joke and the website is little more than an advertisement for their d-list search engines and their "BrowserAccelerator" program which is, by the way, classified as spyware by F-Secure, CastleCops, and everyone else that has reviewed it.
At least Alexa is run by Amazon and I trust them more than most companies these days. - kiph, on 04/20/2009, -0/+0Shouldn't this be titled "Google surpasses MSN in Alexa Rank?" Even on the Page Views tab of that page, it shows MSN higher.
- 2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Google Surpasses MSN in Traffic" but does Netcraft confirm it?
- Jdaman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What caused the spike around 3rd quarter 2004?
- haochi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Finally, "I Love Google!"
- NiX0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Alexa is *****, it ranks sites by spying on people who use their toolbar"
peeps don't even have to install the toolbar either. their tactics of getting data are a little shady. i.e. installing their software w/o the knowledge of the user. bah-humbug.
granted that is a good way to perform accurate surveys by forced participation, it's is in no way legitimate practice. No one has the right to spy.
Honestly, I think Google has been surpassing MSN traffic for a long time. This is simply because hardcore computer users both use Google and remove Alexa when using Anti-Spyware software. This data only points out that the people who are unfamiliar with removing spyware are using google more.
I personally hate Alexa, so no digg. No offense. - fishymusic1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0huh. I thought that Google was always ahead. It was always ahead in my mind, at least.
