- vroom101, on 10/11/2007, -13/+99This is like the 2nd or 3rd time I've seen something about a "Digg killer". Folks, let me speak plainly. There are only four ways Digg.com can be killed:
1. Kevin Rose sells the company to...ah...right, he just sells the company.
2. Diggers get so upset with the Digg.com staff and management (the SysAdmins, NetAdmins, and software engineers are never at fault, right?), e.g., "No. Photo-Image-Picture. Section." available by the year 2010, that diggers -- and I mean every digger -- leaves en mass, returning only after the year 2030. By that time, many of us diggers will be so old and gray that we'll count ourselves fortunate that we can still remember the login/user name.
3. Digg.com unplugs the the servers from the Internet, but leaves everything up and running for use inside the company -- call that the IntraDiggNet where the employees are the only diggers.
4. The U.S. House of Representatives passes a constitutional amendment killing "freedom of speech" and "freedom of the press" which is ratified by 3/4 of the States and -- I weep at even the thought -- the U.S. Constitution is amended. Bye-bye Reddit. Bye-bye Slashdot. Bye-bye freewheeling, freedom-loving Digg.com.
So until one of the above happens, a "Digg killer" application/Web Y.X is a germ of a fantasy within a fantasy! - mrfreeziexp, on 10/11/2007, -4/+40What is up with all these "digg killers"? ON DIGG
- andrewcsayer, on 10/11/2007, -1/+37How many years do you get for killing DIGG?
- Daunting, on 10/11/2007, -0/+20Facebook truly has some potential with their Applications. However, most of the current applications are geared towards nonsensical ridiculousness. Hopefully something with utility, like this, will come soon. I'm getting sick of being super duper vampire poked.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+16"There’s a lot of smart people using Google Reader — Eric Auchard at Reuters is on the list, for instance. That’ll lead to a lot better news than Digg picks on an average day."
Who the hell does this guy think he is. time to kick some ass. To the Diggmobile! - Eldorian, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12Can someone please coin a new "killer" term to kill the current term?
- Amablue, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10It's like the question "What happens when an unstoppable object hits an unmovable wall"
- capiCrimm, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7it changes direction?
- AgentHatchet, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Proof that Digg is successful, it has so many "killers"
- PoeticExplosion, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10While I agree that Digg will be hard to kill, keep in mind that Friendster had a virtual monopoly on the social networking market for a long time...
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5If it allows me to filter out the overly positive Apple stories, the overly negative Microsoft stories, and anything to do with Paris Hilton...I'm in.
- JeremyCouch, on 12/22/2008, -1/+6Probably not a Digg killer unless google were to jump on board and run with it, but it's certainly a very useful idea.
- resta6, on 01/12/2009, -1/+6a site's death isn't instant...its a downhill process, as more and more users find the alternative..then they have an active account on both services, and finally they start using only the new service
- merreborn, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5In short, the community is what makes digg, not the technology. There are probably already a dozen different sites out there with better technology (hell, digg's comment system is worse in a lot of ways than some systems that are 5+ years older). But until they manage to amass a sizable community, they'll never be "digg killers".
Metcalfe's law helps explain this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metcalfe's_law - mrhaines, on 10/11/2007, -5/+9Too bad the facebook google reader app sucks balls.
- broknman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4And where does the story promotion/demotion and content democracy come in to this?
- vroom101, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Stating the obvious here: Slashdot is still very much alive.
- snowpilot, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3these stories must get dugg just to be buried with copious amounts of digg user hate.
- lazyrussian, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4lol, or are according to a physics, this object (if it were sub0-nuclear), it would quantum tunnel and exponentially decrease in energy.
There, problem solved. :p - NiX0n, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3@orangester, find the damn reply button, and use it!
Chuck Norris has dugg my comment up. - PRlME, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5iPod Killer iPhone Killer Google Map Killer MS Killer MySpace Killer new member to the gang the Digg Killer
- santeria49, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7Buried for use of "killer".
- profOblivion, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Yeah, exactly.
- clarient, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Digg + Annoying articles about 'digg killers' = Digg killer?
- chadell, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2If rumours are to be believed, Microsoft might buy facebook which may bring a halt to facebook+Google reader romance.
- orangester, on 10/11/2007, -8/+10@ vroom101
You forgot about Chuck Norris. One roundhouse kick and Digg is done for. - NiX0n, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2What's friendster?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3What about when Milton Waddams lights the building on fire?
- queraxus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I wouldn't be so sure. Until recently, noone believed there could be a Slashdot killer ...
- lilbitmoreslyk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2no proof? well i have some, DIGG IS NOT DIEING, it is simply just tapering off. If you look at the graph here:
http://www.alexa.com/data/details/traffic_details?site0=www.digg.com%2F&site1=&site2=&site3=&site4=&y=t&z=3&h=300&w=610&range=3y&size=Medium&url=www.digg.com/
you can see that digg is (in my opinion) tapering off, it had a flood of new users and vistors giving it that giant boost in late 2006 and early 2007 but some of the flaky vistors/users have left and the people who like digg and are part of community now stayed hence the reason for it losing some traffic. THAT DOES NOT MEAN it is dieing. Jeez, i mean with a 95 ranking on Alexa i doubt digg is going anywhere soon. - Blom, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3The fact that it's comment system is 30% spelling/grammar correction, 30% 12 year old Internet speak, and 20% bitching about the post rather than just digging it down, Digg was dead long ago. Now I almost exclusively use it as an RSS type headline feed - some of the posts are still interesting, just the mindless drivel attached to them tends not to be. The concept is still a good idea, just hard to filter out the crap sometimes...
- Baku, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Since when is posting a link once spamming? Get your facts straight before you make assumptions about someone.
- Baku, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2"(I want a digg banner for my website)"
You should take a look at the Tools section sometime. In there you'll find: http://digg.com/tools/buttons - vroom101, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I didn't say DIGG is growing or shrinking. DIGG is popular for a simple reason: diggers keep digging stories to put on the http://Digg.com simple, effective, and fun front page, with comments that never fail to be interesting.
- raymanunique, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2A hang-out for angry geeks? That''l be Digg.
- vroom101, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1PUH-LEEEEZE! Even the great Chuck Norris would instantly fall from just ONE wave of the DiggForce Finger!
- MikeonTV, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Kevin Rose could register at Twitter and Reddit and Digg wouldn't die
- capiCrimm, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1wait a second, are we talking about politics or physics?
- pbone, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1you mean your chevette?
- jedikv, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Since the expansion to more than just tech news - digg has gone down hill
- ckhw2, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2No dude... that's not what he meant. Mergers or acquisitions of companies are generally bad for us consumers because it (usually) reduces competition i.e. "evil".
- vroom101, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The U.S. Senate, the U.S. Executive branch, and the U.S. Judical branch aren't involved in the constitution amendment process at all. Once the U.S. House of Representatives approves the amendment it goes directly to the State legislatures for ratification. I think the States can initiate the process of amending the constitution too; I'm not as clear on this so hopefully someone will help me out.
- xst4t1kx, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Every single one of you that submit an "X killer" story are idiot's.
- fatpads, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2To me that's just a logical fallacy. If it's unstoppable then there's nothing it couldn't move. If there's an unmovable wall then nothing is unstoppable. It's like the: "can god make a #### so #### he can't ####."
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1According to Newton's third law they will remain hitting themselves forever.
- mtxblau, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I used to use Digg quite religiously - now it's once every two or three days. Sometimes weeks at a time I go without visiting the site. The comment system is finally up to par with, say, Slashdot, but it seems Digg is much more focused on pushing the latest technology as opposed to a better user experience (and I don't think those two necessarily go hand in hand).
- Username222, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It is interesting how everyone is looking for a "digg killer". I am personally just looking for a "digg replacement". You know... some features digg should add... Well, that and not millions of stories about how to even make the iPhone into your channel changer...
- Username222, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I remember back when if you didn't have a Friendster account, you weren't social networking. But today it is like 20th globally. It is WAY popular in SE Asia...
- nakani, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Interestingly interesting

What is Digg?
