- radialmodule, on 08/24/2008, -1/+56I'm not sure about other towns/cities/villages, but in mine (and the last one I lived in, which was 2000 miles across the country) if you post a 'No Trespassing' or 'Private Property/Road/etc.' sign, then you are required to provide a physical barrier to egress if you want the courts to back your complaints. In other words, just posting a sign is not a reasonable solution to prevent the public from entering your private property.
You see, we have citizens in our country with sight-disabilities, and signs are pretty much meaningless to them, for the most part. A fence, wall or other physical barrier is pretty clear notice.
Also, in some localities, once a thoroughfare has been established (a road or trail for instance) and a reasonable barrier to egress has not been provided in a reasonable amount of time then travel across the property via that thoroughfare is no longer exclusively private. In other words, if you lay down a road or trail on your own private property (or even if someone else does) you also have to prevent folks from using it as soon as possible, not after the public has already established their use of it (this is what allows ANYONE to use your unblocked driveway as a turnaround).
I'd suggest folks check out their local ordinances for the rules in your town before crying foul. Putting up a 10 ft. wall wouldn't hurt either. :) - inverselogic, on 08/25/2008, -1/+41"We don't take too kindly to folks who don't take too kindly to folks around here"
-south park - inactive, on 08/24/2008, -10/+49Actually, it's their drivers that need to learn to read. They better watch out when they start mapping the rural south -- folks down there don't take so well to trespassers.
- fuzzybeard, on 08/24/2008, -2/+37I wonder how long it's gonna be before there's a street view picture that includes someone brandishing a shotgun?
- th3heretic, on 08/24/2008, -3/+29"GIT OFF MA PROPERTAY" ****** shotgun*
- zdislaw, on 08/25/2008, -1/+25I just ran up my street and stuck a "robots.txt" file to the nearest pole. No problems since.
http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answe ... - Aurabolt, on 08/25/2008, -4/+27So now it's illegal to LOOK at some guy's owned land?
Harrison Bergeron, here we come - inactive, on 08/25/2008, -1/+20coming soon, google rape view. Allows you to enter in a simulated version of their house and rape their mom.
- koenpunt, on 08/25/2008, -1/+16Look, street view in real life: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=Yukon+Ave, ...
- inactive, on 08/25/2008, -2/+14They should try to just ignore the Area 51 no trespassing sign's as well. I'll be waiting for the photo's.
- IllBeBack, on 08/25/2008, -4/+15We are the Google.
Lower your shields and surrender your streets.
We will add your private residence photos to our own.
Your culture will adapt to service us.
Resistance is futile. - Jayphen, on 08/25/2008, -0/+11That's what I was wondering. Is he upside-down between the two cars? There is noone in either car; I really can't think of any explanation other than his car not having the park brake on, and rolling backwards into him.. Even still, how did he end up being upside-down? And why did he set some things down on the bonnet of the car behind the one with the boot open?
Is he trying to fellate himself? - libradragon, on 08/25/2008, -1/+12You could already do that by driving by their house in your own car. I prefer to drive a rental car while wearing a wig, sunglasses and a fake mustache.
- linagee, on 08/25/2008, -2/+12You will be cataloged and databased. The internet collective has you. Whether it is Google or the next company to drive around with cameras strapped to cars, the cat is out of the bag.
- closetosomet, on 08/25/2008, -0/+9what exactly happened to the guy pictured in the article? any guesses?
- Onji, on 08/25/2008, -1/+10Maybe he saw the Google Street View Van coming and thought "Oh *****, I should get my hilarious sign out of the trunk and flash it at Google." He gets out quickly, doesn't put brake on, car rolls back, he falls into trunk and looks like an asshat on the Internet.
- Her3t1k, on 08/25/2008, -1/+10No, this article is about private streets, and whether or not the van/car/whateveritis has the right to drive on it. They are only using the pictures as proof that google was there, on the private drive where it supposedly wasn't supposed to be. Why these people care is completely beyond my comprehension.
- DismantleRepair, on 08/25/2008, -0/+9You are allowed to photograph anything that is in plain view from a public area.
- aegis9975, on 08/25/2008, -0/+8Any photograph taken on public property is legal. Hence if the picture is taken from a public road its legit, the moment the photographer steps onto private property (or private driveway) it becomes illegal without consent. Essentially, its not the public's responsibility to protect an individuals privacy if they are on public property (like a road). Hence, don't complain because people driving by your house saw you naked because you didn't close the curtains when you took a shower.
- Persian5Life, on 08/24/2008, -5/+13“You don’t need to see his identification … These aren’t the droids you’re looking for … He can go about his business … Move along.”
- soupeh, on 08/25/2008, -3/+9While I find the premise of your comment mildly amusing, I would just like to point out that neither the word signs, nor photos require an apostrophe to make it plural.
Thankyou, my inner grammar-nazi is satiated. I will now be on my way. - Her3t1k, on 08/25/2008, -2/+8Isn't being able to find someone kind of the ***** point of an address?
- MrTea, on 08/25/2008, -0/+6wtf is that guy doing?
- CreativeGuy, on 08/25/2008, -1/+7The only problem with the headline of this Digg is that there is no "sign" in the image, and the street they're on isn't private.
- adamsteinbaugh, on 08/25/2008, -0/+5If UPS shows up on your private property, it's because they had a reasonable assumption that they had business with you. Google does not have business with you: they're providing a service to everyone else. Everyone else isn't allowed on your property. Therefore, Google is not.
However, attempting to prohibit Google from taking photos from the street because you have a "Private Property" sign out front is futile. Would you expect that anyone walking down your public street would avert their eyes because of your sign? Google provides a method of having those images removed, if you so desire. It's the equivalent to standing next to your "Private Property" sign with a shotgun and a menacing growl: "You kids get off my internets!" - CreativeGuy, on 08/25/2008, -1/+6He's breaking into the car by getting in the trunk and pushing the back seats down. That being said, he probably owns the car, otherwise why not just toss a brick through the window. It appears from that the neighborhood they're in, nobody would notice, care or intrude.
- Her3t1k, on 08/25/2008, -2/+7Invasion of privacy? You realize what they're doing is driving around on PUBLIC streets (and some private ones too *oops*) collecting the light that is bouncing OFF of the houses? How is that an INvasion? I don't see why anyone would have a problem with it unless they like to traipse around naked in their front lawn. (In which case that would be indecent exposure lol)
- Apocalyptic0n3, on 08/25/2008, -0/+5I'm all for privacy but this is getting ridiculous. You can't just go "Oh oh oh! You can't come here because we don't want you here!" As radialmodule said... slapping up a sign means absolutely nothing. Just like people who have "No soliciting" stickers on their front doors are idiots for thinking that that means no one is allowed to come to their doors anymore. If you have a fence up... different story. If you are a gated community... different story. But guess what? Google can take as many images from the outside of that fence as they want and there isn't a damned thing you can do about it.
- frenchkick, on 08/25/2008, -8/+13why is everyone freaking out about this?
its not like their going inside your house and raping you mom.
protect the privacy of who?
its not like i do illegal things on my lawn.
street view is quite handy, so go on google. - Vektuz, on 08/25/2008, -0/+4So I could start posting NO TRESSPASSING signs at random with no force of law and they'd have to obey them? Cool.
Wait, no? Then how do they tell between a real NO TRESSPASSING sign with force of law and a NO TRESSPASSING sign thats got no weight behind it? - primordel, on 08/25/2008, -0/+4there's bound to be at least a couple, just a matter of finding them. :P
- Gatesophile, on 08/25/2008, -0/+4I know that's what I did.
- whatwhatwhoa, on 08/25/2008, -0/+4The phrase "thank you" is consisted of two words.
- epohs, on 08/25/2008, -0/+3He was finally able to reach the cell phone charger that had slid up and into the far corner of his trunk.
- aladrin, on 08/25/2008, -0/+3There's these things called "Quotation Marks" that you may have heard of. That means they said it. A colon used like that is being used improperly and doesn't necessarily mean anything.
- soupeh, on 08/25/2008, -0/+3Consisted is a verb in past-tense. The correct format for your assertion is "The phrase thank you consists of two words".
Thank you for the correction. :) - caseycoold, on 08/25/2008, -3/+6Grow up.
- summner, on 08/25/2008, -1/+4yeah, also ***** national geographic, and ***** every other man/woman or company having access to camera and taking photo. Those ***** little Japanese tourist how the ***** can they make photos of that ***** statue while I'm passing by it.
Well B3000 it's not like they are making photos of the inside of your house, to plot how to drag you in the middle of the night to their secret brainwashing HQ. - drakia, on 08/25/2008, -1/+4Guy? I thought that was a skirt that person was wearing o.O
- JudgeMonkey, on 08/25/2008, -0/+3"The key to the trunk is also the key to the door"
Is it? My ignition key works the door and ignition, and my trunk key works the trunk and glove compartment. - Travelsonic, on 08/25/2008, -0/+3Whoop-de-doo, culture spreads, get over it.
- inactive, on 08/25/2008, -1/+3ah, but why waste all that effort, time, and gas while you can do it in the comfort of your own home? you can also easily stalk people if they live out of state.
- cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -1/+3Very, especially when you're cataloguing hundreds of millions of homes.
- LeeSoong, on 08/25/2008, -0/+2google should avoid homes with this sign:
'No Trespassing.
Honk Horn on Approach.
Do Not Exit Vehicle.
Failure to follow directions will get you shot!"
- sign on private drive of a home a few miles from a state prison.
(Seems having a home close to a prison has cause for concern to the home owner...)
Google should respect 'No Trespassing' signs and private roads,
how would they feel if random individuals came wondering through their building ?
Private property is private.
Home owners with long driveways or private roads may want to invest in a basic road gate.
It doesn't have to be locked - but marked no trespassing and requiring a person to exit a car and operate the gate handle to open it would more clearly demonstrate willful trespass. - kaniz, on 08/25/2008, -0/+2From what I've read, Google puts out an ad looking for drivers in XYZ city. People don't know that they are showing up to drive the Google Street View Car, they just know that they are showing up for a driving job. When they show up, they get some very basic training and information on privacy.
That being said, when letting any Tom, Dick, Joe or Larry that shows up for a driving job posting - you cant expect every one of them to be following the instructions perfectly. - diabolicedict, on 08/25/2008, -0/+2I doubt that every house has its own private road, and so far i'm not seeing any streetview shots on a garage driveway. Where did you get that "hundreds of millions of homes" estimate?
It is also unlikely that there is only a single Google van roaming the streets around the world. - clonemaster, on 08/25/2008, -1/+3Go on....
- Pixelpaws, on 08/25/2008, -0/+1If it's a totally unrelated topic, why the hell are you posting about it?
- PinkFloydFan, on 08/25/2008, -0/+1They don't even have maps satellite view down here, nor do they have my address in either google or mapquest. I think we're safe for a while longer.
