- radixus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I'm grossly under paid for my area! I guess I should use this information for a raise :)
- redneckintn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Very nice!! This would be useful for scoping out potential neighborhoods I would like to move to.
- jdoohen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Because they're up to their ears in debt!
- thenativeraver, on 10/12/2007, -9/+16Nothin but white people around me, they're all watching me.
- osbjmg, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12Very nice!! This would be useful for scoping out potential neighborhoods I would like to rob.
- Rogee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7http://zips.sourceforge.net
- hitbyatrain, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Now that's hella cool.
- jfox00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I think we should rename Digg to Ddos - because every story I clicked on today was unavailable. Pretty annoying.
- jonrad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I don't really know what the point of the map is. If I want census information I just use http://factfinder.census.gov/home/saff/main.html and if I want maps I just use google maps. Why both? Maybe if I forgot what my neighborhood looks like and point out who I think is tilting the scale on the average house price?
- MOJIRA, on 05/17/2008, -1/+5Haha, 45k avg income around my house but i focused the smallest ring around a ritsy neighborhood and it shot up to 192k :)
I wonder how much Bill Gates affects the average of his neighborhood... - vvaduva, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Now, this is one cool use of google maps...way to go and congrats to the author.
Off the wall question, does anyone know of a free source of U.S. zip codes and geo coordinates (long + lat)? Unless I am missing something, the google APIs are useless without something to map a zip code to coordinates, and they aint cheap to buy...I was hoping someone has compiled a database that is freely available somewhere. - airedale, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The numbers are pretty much correct - but the way it is presented is incorrect. The Average income is not average income per person, but per household. THAT IS A VERY BIG DIFFERENCE!
- elvisisdead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Speaking as someone who worked on developing enumeration plans for the 2K census - Do you have any clue as to the undertaking a complete Census is? Do you? It takes four flipping years just to analyze the data. It takes up to eight years to plan. We started putting people in place to start opening offices in 1997 to make it happen.
Look for the Curent Population Survey or the ACS for more current data. - stefanmurphy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Perhaps the median/average income displayed is per household, not per person. You could be comparing your salary against a lot of two income families. Just thinking out loud.
- airedale, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Made me feel better about where we are buying :)
- kysle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ummm. Am I missing something? What are you supposed to do? It says to select a report and then click on the map... It just puts up a target with different colors but it's the same colors no matter where I click. Does it only work in some cities?
- Cybersqu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2wow, thats pretty sweet. I had no idea i was doing so crapy compared to my neighbors..
Average Income: $99,205.... I need a new job..
Nice find though, even if it is old.. It's new to me, and thats all that matters in the world! ME!!! ;-)
+dig - akira117, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Here ya go:

(Doesn't point directly at his house) - EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It's not curious at all because it *IS* a privately run site. The site uses data from Google and the census but make no claim to represent either. If you assumed otherwise the fault lies only with you. There are a number of these mash-ups which combine data with Google maps and none (to my knowledge) are actually hosted by Google. They still provide a valuable service.
It is doubtful the site is doing anything harmful with submitted data. Still, you should always use caution when providing personal information, preferably BEFORE you click submit. - aurifex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's under the digg effect now, can't view it anymore.
- hitmikey, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5No I did the same thing, just got the target with 2 different color circles....don't care too much to look any further. nodigg
- gherikill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Great if shopping for a house, can find neighbourhoods to avoid easily using demographics.
- nstern2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah All I get is 4 different rings and that's it. I'm guessing the digg effect has something to do with it.
- sofong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Too bad that it only works in IE only and not Firefox and Safari
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You have to wait. The census data is loading slowly. Be patient and it will appear eventually below the "Report" drop-down selection. Your web browser will show the page fully loaded, but it's still working in the background. I'm surprised the server is holding up at all.
- BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Average in my area within a mile is $93,479.
I believe my family makes only around $50,000 a year.
My old area (old house) makes an average of $46,318 within a 1 mile radius.
And average income for Bill Gate's area (1835 73rd Ave NE, Medina, WA 98039) is $219,778 . - GuyNextDoor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Hold on...I've got him on my quick contact list in my Treo...I'll get the address in a sec...
:) - sinner6, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I have 1 black within 5 miles of me. Don't know why that is interesting but it is.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What's the richest area in the States? I found a place at 360'000$ average near Beverly Hills. Who does better?
- dmbatcu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Remember that census information is collected every 10th year; a lot may have happened in the past 6 years.
- diecastbeatdown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i use this site as well, and find it to be much more useful. also, this google maps site does not report for my area and seems to be suffering from some issues.
- strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the yahoo api will translate zip codes to lat/longs
http://developer.yahoo.net/
Yahoo APIs make Google APIs their bitch, in a very V Dub in Da House kind of way - jk3us, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this was a dupe of my last post... can't delete it... mod it down, I guess
- yonbeastie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I'm poorer than most of my neighbors.
That sucks :( - v3xt0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't care for this API usage example that much (another googlemaps API usage example, whoopdy doo), but I do like the results from the census...
Male Population: 337,100
Female Population: 355,403
I knew there was a reason why I love living in the city that I live in! =) - hansonc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wouldn't it have to do the same thing to have "been done, and better"?
Not that your site isn't cool too. - meefman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1We'll be stuck with this data until 2010. And the reason why this isn't done every year is that it's hella expensive. Maybe every 5 years... hmm.
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I disagree. While I agree the information table is the most important section the map gives context to what the one, three, and five mile limits actually encompass. For my parents address it shows the data includes both the slums by the airport and a large golf course community. From that I can imply there are very few people near the "average" income. If you just search for your own address the map might not be that helpful. If you're searching for other areas the information is valuable.
- wonboodoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think the information table is the important thing here. The Google Maps section is not very relevant. Really this could be accomplished by just having the "address" fields and dropping the Google Map altogether. The Google Map adds a cool factor (and gets it on Digg) but seems like (almost) useless functionality to me.
- ascott9, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Am I retarded or something, I put in address and I get the target looking thing, but then how do I get any information from it? It doesn't show anything else.
- daFilms, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Gates is interesting, but check out what score of Google employees did to Atherton, CA 94027
specifically look at the 1 mile radius of Avg. Income... anyone else notice the diversity the community provides?
http://65.39.85.13/google/default.htm - bradzilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Gold Coast of Connecticut! Greenwich, CT 06831 and parts around there. Purchase, NY 10577 is close to Beverly Hills' data. There are houses out here that make the White House look like servant's quarters. Great page. Definitely dugg.
- chicagobiker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Like some others have said above, don't feel *too* bad, the income figures are for "households". Meaning that you are competing with all of the working married couples in your neighborhood and/or working families of more than 2.
So if you live with someone who works, combine the two or three (or four or five) incomes and then you'll know how you compare to the data on that map.
(The census asks what's the income of the "household" meaning everyone who lives there *combined*) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This little tool only gives you data on the legal immigrants & us citizens, absolutely useless for many areas, such as the 1mile radius of N 29th St & E Paradise Ln in Phoenix AZ for example.
- Namco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think it was getting hammered earlier. I was having the same problem at the same time you were. It's a lot faster now.
- kearns, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This would be great for crime updates and finding dates, or for dating criminals. Endless possibilities.
http://www.ccmostwanted.com/ - airedale, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You do realize that the "Average Income: $99,205" is a combined income, or "Average Family Income"?
- quasipalm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It works in Firefox 1.5 for me.
- rahman15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is really cool application…..also check out these applications using Google map API and census information….
http://www.cityfactsusa.com
http://www.myzipcodemap.com - renwoshin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0man.... average income in my area is $129,190. what do they all do?....
