- firefox15, on 01/18/2009, -27/+153Why reinvent the wheel? What's wrong with Wikipedia? Not to mention I've never even heard of "Google Knol."
- jggube, on 01/18/2009, -8/+70If we all thought like that, there would be no competitive markets, and in turn, no motivation for innovation. If Linux and Apple said, "why reinvent the wheel, what's wrong with Windows", we wouldn't see innovations in not only Apple and Linux, but Windows as well (because of competition).
- rivalius13, on 01/18/2009, -1/+55The knol article on Devil May Cry 4: http://knol.google.com/k/chewy/devil-may-cry-4/1ir ...
The wiki article on Devil May Cry 4: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devil_may_cry_4
Ya, I think wiki wins this round, and probably about 99,999 more rounds too. - inactive, on 01/18/2009, -2/+41Wikipedia ftw.
- likeyehokwhatev, on 01/18/2009, -4/+36My cat's breath smells like cat food.
- sittingduck89, on 01/18/2009, -5/+34This is the first time I've heard of 'Knol'. I gave up after 5 seconds of the front-page.
- bweltondav, on 01/18/2009, -3/+28Try to make any significant edits in Wikipedia and see how long they last. Wikipedia is practically run by its moderators.
- rivalius13, on 01/18/2009, -6/+29That's great, except, Mac OS came out before Windows 1.0.
- Rocco03, on 01/18/2009, -1/+22The artitles in Knol seems more like blogs entries rather than encyclopedia content.
- MindTrigger, on 01/18/2009, -3/+23newsflash: Competition is a good thing.
- Lockhart1, on 01/18/2009, -0/+14Why does the Knol article start with "What's the beef"?
Just the facts please knol. - seldon452, on 01/18/2009, -0/+13Oh hey, I didn't know this even existed!
- moduc, on 01/18/2009, -1/+13@jggube agree. I just test out this page:
http://knol.google.com/k/aaditya-bharadwaj/thyrist ...
"From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia" => so they can just copy the content? If this the case, then why 100,000? Why not just several millions on wiki? - inactive, on 01/18/2009, -1/+12I agree. On Knol you can have great articles like this:
http://knol.google.com/k/maria-manso/diaper-cake-i ... - hellaHOMER, on 01/18/2009, -2/+11Yes, but can it beat Squidoo at it's own game?
- ElBeh, on 01/18/2009, -0/+9Exactly. The winner here is user choice.
- plainandsimple, on 01/18/2009, -1/+10Does Knol do anything better? Or is this just a "me too" thing?
- lelapin, on 01/18/2009, -3/+11This news shortly after Google threw the towel and pulled the plug on Google Notebook, Jaiku, dodgeball and Google video. The contrast is all the more startling.
- Ratatosk, on 01/18/2009, -1/+9why is everyone talking about wikipedia? knol is not here to replace wikipedia, and it's not meant to be a wikipedia killer (which it of course never will or would be)... knol takes a different approach: You publish an article that expresses your view and goes and your name. Wikipedia's goal is to have neutral information on a topic, while knol's approach is to have several people's opinions
what is better? none of them of course.. it depends on the situation what fits better... if you want to know encyopledia stuff you go to wikipedia, but if you look for a recipe for spaghetti sauces you won't find them on wiki (and it's good like that) - inactive, on 01/18/2009, -2/+10they did NOT pull the plug on google video.
- michaelpinto, on 01/18/2009, -1/+8But how good are those page and how often have they been updated?
- dnewstep, on 01/18/2009, -4/+11i tell u for sure it cant give even a little fight to wikipedia
- mike23w, on 01/18/2009, -0/+7It doesn't look like Knol has any quality control of the content.
I've seen numerous wikipedia articles flagged as having questionable content, or that the article needs cleanup.
I don't think the Knol article would have made it on wikipedia as-is. - bmcnally, on 01/18/2009, -0/+6You couldn't parse "computer game" out of "the game would be released simultaneously for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC"? Especially when both PC and game are in the sentence?
I'm not sure if a full on encyclopedia article would help, dude. - rolosworld, on 01/18/2009, -0/+5I would like to know how many lines each article has stolen at least from wikipedia... there can be a few with unique content, but I bet most have copied something from wikipedia or another website.
- hakkzpets, on 01/18/2009, -0/+5It compares DMC 4 to friggin' Street Fighter 2... It's like comparing a banana with a potato.
- thredden, on 01/18/2009, -3/+8at least google knol isn't begging for money all the time.
- inactive, on 01/18/2009, -1/+6We would then get a biased encyclopedia.
The truth would be bent towards the adverts. - HonoredMule, on 01/18/2009, -0/+5For those of us who treat encyclopedias as sources of established or mature knowledge and not mere platforms for modern commerce/advertising, this is exactly how it should be.
Wikipedia is a community-controlled encyclopedia.
Knol is a thinly-veiled platform for self-publishing. - Mujokan, on 01/18/2009, -1/+5Proof of the pudding is in the total lack of web presence. I signed up there about when it started. I had some kind of home page with an icon, shout type things from other users, whatever. Went back now for the first time in six months. Apparently that's all been eliminated. The only time I think it's entered my mind in the intervening period is when I read some article criticizing it for lack of oversight.
Not such a big deal. Google throws a bunch of stuff up against the wall and sees what sticks. Lots of these ideas come from things their employees make up on their lunch break, like their 2nd Life type idea that got a bit of hype then died. Good for them, I guess. Doesn't cost them much to try out new ideas. I think we'll all know if "Knol" becomes something generally useful. - MrViklund, on 01/18/2009, -1/+5Can't they just copy everything on Wikipedia?
- fknrat, on 01/18/2009, -1/+5Google What?
- kersny, on 01/18/2009, -2/+6Never heard of it. Wikipedia FTW!
- iambrucenolan, on 01/18/2009, -1/+5Most of the pages written are spam and advertisements. Nothing beats Wikipedia!
- Trebis, on 01/18/2009, -1/+5Even when your competition is a nonprofit organization? Just sayin...
- veins, on 01/18/2009, -0/+3wiki's pages have already increased by over 1500 since the article was published ...
- spudsstuff, on 01/19/2009, -0/+3Turns out Knol is no Wikipedia killer
- ptFoe, on 01/19/2009, -0/+3Nobody trusts Jim Wales and his crack habit
- Chooxo, on 01/18/2009, -0/+3I'd write an article for it but I'd probably just be using Wikipedia as my source.
Well, copying and pasting it, I mean. - shortsellit, on 01/18/2009, -1/+4Exactly.
A local alternative radio station here had a HILARIOUS experiment going on involving this problem. - MrViklund, on 01/18/2009, -1/+3***** your comment.
- kreatr, on 01/18/2009, -0/+2It cant even stand in front of wikipedia.... I'll stay with Wiki
- glhf, on 01/18/2009, -0/+2I think they just stopped active development on those.
- dengzhi, on 01/18/2009, -1/+3cuz google wants to take over the universe
- xaos42, on 01/18/2009, -0/+2For how-to's there is already wikihow.com . And meanwhile there are loads of those sites.
- nazsco, on 01/18/2009, -0/+2I tell you what's wrong.
Google CAN'T ADVERTISE in wikipedia.
Google send most of it's search traffic to wikipedia.
Google wants to advertise there. but since it do not do evil like microsoft, they will not destroy wikipedia and then buy it. they will just destroy it. - kagebutsu, on 01/18/2009, -1/+3Wtf i've never even heard of knol.
