- kentifer, on 10/14/2008, -1/+53Google Germany just lost image thumbnails.
- inactive, on 10/14/2008, -1/+46Delist them, problem solved.
- Renegade89, on 10/14/2008, -1/+44This is stupid... Germany is wrong google is always right.
- nrox653, on 10/14/2008, -1/+41Congratulations, Germans, you've just been kicked from using Google.
FYI it's called robots.txt, idiots, use it. - anaesthetica, on 10/14/2008, -0/+34Germany just lost image thumbnails not just from Google, but potentially from every search engine and every website that uses thumbnails to link to another site's content. Good job Germans.
- LunaticFringe, on 10/14/2008, -0/+33Now watch as Germany's economy implodes in on itself as a result of no image search creating a decline in productivity due to an inability to easily access pornography.
- inactive, on 10/14/2008, -2/+32Hitler is back and this time its personal
- inactive, on 10/14/2008, -0/+30noindex?
nocase. - bincoder, on 10/14/2008, -0/+24Perhaps Germany should download and install Beijings great firewall.
- RawCoyote, on 10/14/2008, -1/+21If someone has a problem with someone else looking at a thumbnail of their copyrighted image, what's it doing on a server open to the WWW in the first place?
- reyoo30309, on 10/14/2008, -1/+16When will they learn!? Copyright means, "I have the right to copy."
- aolshove, on 10/14/2008, -0/+12Is it okay to use the term "Kraut" now that they're at war with Google and thus The Internet in general?
- leontes, on 10/14/2008, -1/+12The only harm that comes to these individuals may be through the process of deep linking but the works themselves: you need to go to the website in question to view them.
If Germany has any fair use clause, these images should fall into it. And if they don't have fair use, Germany seriously needs to update their copyright law: otherwise it prevents Google from doing what Google does best.
It's an idiotic law and Google is helping the content manufactures. Back off, Germany. - ButterLoyalist, on 10/14/2008, -0/+8Google should convert the copyrighted image thumbnails to ASCII art instead.
- inactive, on 10/14/2008, -0/+7But their economy is fundamentally strong!
- Fhwqhgads, on 10/14/2008, -5/+11Hey, thats called responsibility. That's completely out of the question. They need governments to make choices for them. Same as here.
- inactive, on 10/14/2008, -0/+6Germany really does not like Google - Bad press about Chrome and now this... There must be a reason.
- darthjure, on 10/14/2008, -1/+6The websites lose, searchers lose, copyright holders lose, Google loses...
Nobody wins. - inactive, on 10/14/2008, -2/+7The Chinese government will shoot you if you piss them off. Really - I'm not joking. Comply or die.
- lulzitsadigg, on 10/14/2008, -0/+5berlin firewall
- zigardne, on 10/14/2008, -0/+4don't temp us
- zbeast, on 10/14/2008, -0/+4So you don't want anyone to be able to find your web site?
What the heck are you fighting for? - LeviTheSmith, on 10/14/2008, -2/+6They also do not like rag doll effects in games.
- KiraDnote, on 10/14/2008, -0/+4you mean because they are sour?
- madeingermany, on 10/14/2008, -3/+7http://images.google.de/images?q=digg should this not show thumbnails?
- WhiteHamster, on 10/15/2008, -0/+4What's up with that? Why doesn't Google just buy Germany and get it over with?
- pradvan, on 10/14/2008, -0/+4Idiots...
- JasonCox, on 10/14/2008, -0/+4How do you say "No Google Porn Search for you!" in German?
- inactive, on 10/14/2008, -1/+5This is terrific! Germany is cutting their own throat; our businesses will benefit from this. Isn't government grand.
- inactive, on 10/14/2008, -2/+6***** Germany. This is stupid.
- drinequality, on 10/15/2008, -0/+3The robots.txt file should have a licensing section.
In this age of apps built on apps it should be possible to automatically determine content licensing. - ThinkOutTheBox, on 10/14/2008, -0/+3There are rumors floating around that Germany may be on the verge of a recession.
- NOD32user, on 10/14/2008, -0/+3Actually, this impacts Digg also - no thumbnails for german articles, images or videos on Digg please from now on.
- inactive, on 10/15/2008, -0/+3lol?
That is seriously retarded.
(governmental paranoia sucks) - AboveandBeyond, on 10/14/2008, -0/+3no wonder google does not display ads on image search...
- OneManArmy, on 10/15/2008, -0/+3btw also google is not allowed to use the name gmail in Germany. if u r in Germany and try to access gmail.com u will get a blank page with this
--------------------
We can't provide service under the Gmail name in Germany; we're called Google Mail here instead.
If you're traveling in Germany, you can access your mail at http://mail.google.com.
Oh, and we'd like to link the URL above, but we're not allowed to do that either. Bummer.
For general information about Google, please visit www.google.com or www.google.de. - kaptainKraken, on 10/14/2008, -0/+3the way i see it, google can say *****, and drain a bit of everyone's bandwidth every time a search result pulls up a thumbnail. make them learn the hard way.
- KiraDnote, on 10/14/2008, -0/+3This is stupid. Yes.
- NOD32user, on 10/15/2008, -1/+4If they feel sufficiently confident they can find a royalty free font licenced for commercial use.
- gerwinnz, on 10/14/2008, -1/+4i don't see why anyone would be against a search engine earning them traffic. their loss. i guess in some ways the image search by passes their site and just shows the image but still pretty lame.
- inactive, on 10/14/2008, -2/+4Exactly, I can't see what's so hard to swallow about the whole "Google knows more than you do" thing, but man. Some people.
- rnawky, on 10/15/2008, -0/+2Good idea.
Prevent Germany from using Google or any of its services any more.
And prevent Google from indexing sites from Germany because well, no one cares about them anyways. - MiddleOfNowhere, on 10/15/2008, -0/+2Look, I don't call you "American Idiot" just because some of your fellow countrymen vote for McCain ...
See my post above. This is a decision by one specific court in one particular city in favor of an "artist" who obviously needs some attention *AND* is too dumb to implement robots.txt. This court is known to regularly make goofy, pro-copyright holder decisions. This represents Germany in the same way the KKK represents the US of A. 99.99% of us don't like them.
Is this good enough? - Lynxist, on 10/15/2008, -0/+2Germany have some pretty hefty laws and regulations. We're not even allowed to scrape search engine data off their isp's for research purposes.
- GrooTheWanderer, on 10/14/2008, -0/+2So invade us.
- inactive, on 10/15/2008, -0/+2rofl
- whatthefu, on 10/15/2008, -0/+2Always?
- jimbob007, on 10/15/2008, -0/+2Nr. Porn Google-Suche für Sie!
- nafnosseb, on 10/15/2008, -0/+1Well if it all went like that, they could only seize the google germany domains.
- MiddleOfNowhere, on 10/15/2008, -0/+1Sigh. Government ≠ Court rule.
