- theblooms, on 10/12/2007, -5/+61Damn. I was hoping that myspace would die a long slow painful death. Oh well, better luck next year!
- finalmillenium, on 10/12/2007, -5/+44Why won't myspace die?
- passmeatopic, on 10/12/2007, -4/+34Yeah Google sucks for seizing another great opportunity to make $$$, broaden their position in the market, gain a wider audience and drive their stock even higher...
idiots....do you guys all live in your parents basements? - darkzealot89, on 10/12/2007, -4/+32why google why?!
- sfly510, on 10/12/2007, -6/+33Actually Tom is deleting all accounts in the next 48 hours. Anyone who wants to keep their account must repost this story with the title "Google Deal Bails Out Myspace" within 5 minutes of reading this or their account will be deleted.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26Oh noes! We can't do business with Myspace because teenagers have profiles there! And some of them are emo! Screw that $100 million in profit and increased marketshare we stand to gain. We've got to make sure we still seem "cool" to digg readers and the other 1% of our userbase who will actually know that this deal even exists.
People. Use some common sense, please? :-) - LKBM, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20What, you want the MySpacers running all over the Internet looking for a new hangout? What if they choose Digg?
MySpace is an insane asylum that manages an impressive level of voluntary commitment. - Jadix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21Google is investing in the true generation of the information age. These are the people who use the internet the most, and these are the people who will be using it their whole lives: Teenagers and young adults.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19I applaud google for seizing the bull by the horns. They make a dollar, they give people jobs, and they never f'd me over - so I'm all for it
- ajb2015, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12You may hate the corporations, but why take it out on the story and the poster?
I may hate Bush, but it's not like I won't digg a story if his name is in it. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Google could have owned Myspace for about $600 million. They just paid Myspace $900 million to use their ads for 1 year. If they're not regretting it - they're stupid and I don't think they're stupid.
- Yorn, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12I'm not certain, but you could say that this Google deal ensures that it is a long and slow death as opposed to a quick one where Rupert Murdoch wakes up and says, "What the hell was I thinking anyway?"
- elebrio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Uh... bails out Rupert Murdoch? More like shows that Rupert Murdoch once again made an uber business decision. This deal just PAID for myspace.
- Lewie, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10^ You're the reason my grandma keeps sending me those stupid forwards!! Damn you!!!!
- chuck.kahn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8If YouTube has passed MySpace as the most popular site and they can't make money with Google ads, what hopes does MySpace have?
- shitthisfook, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Myspace will die only if something much better comes along and quickly kills it. This 'something' can come at any time, it just has to come hard.
- joelito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Culebra, remember that the beer drinking, pot smoking myspacers will run the world 20 years from now.
- nazadus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I see most diggers want MySpace to die.
Good for them.
The problem is that the world doesn't revolve around us.
If we had our way Microsoft would be in shambles and the US weouldn't be the 1984'ish environment it is growing into.
MySpace actually has value. It may not have value to _you_ but it has value to someone else.
I use it. Well, not that often, but I do a few times a day. If it were to kersplode my life wouldn't be over. But to some people, it would be the equivalent of a business mans mail box being deleted. They _use_ it.
It would be a _stupid_ move to pass this up and not get the ad revenue from it. Stop looking at things from a 'ew, I don't wanna touch it' perspective and actually place a realistic view.
If you hate it so much then make some alternative that doesn't suck. People want something like that. Deal with it. - RobN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Enormous win for News Corp (who bought MySpace a while ago) -- the ad deal is worth more than MySpace cost, so they're money ahead no matter what. Questionable deal for Google, if they fail to get the ad revenue they're expecting.
Besides, sooner or later MySpace will be the "old" thing, and some new site will be the "new" thing. And since 99.8% of the MySpace sites look like someone threw up on their monitor -- just like back in the 90s when browsers first added the ability to have a background image, and people put up the most god-awful pages you've ever seen, until MySpace that is -- I'm not sure MySpace will continue to be as popular as it is indefinitely. - maximinus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Ah, the joys of contextual advertising:
"Flickr ... decided to stop placing contextual ads on its user profiles after an animal rights activist complained about fur coat ads next to her protest photos of seal hunters in Newfoundland." - binderhead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This makes total sense, it would be hard for Google to lose on this deal.
If you have read anything on this story, Google owes Murdoch nothing if MySpace doesn't meet a certain quota of searches. This is a game of large numbers, similar to casinos; Google gets paid, or MySpace doesn't get paid, the house always wins.
The other bonus to this is even if MySpace goes under, which, God help us, it will eventually, Google doesn't lose any of their image, because their name is hidden behind the defunct MySpace name.
I don't see how Google loses here. Someone point out something I've overlooked here cause it looks good to me. - Rangoth, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I hope this means more porn on MySpace. After all it IS what the internet was made for :)
- MySchizoBuddy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Orkut has 25 million users
MySpace has 100 million users
so Orkut has 25% of MySpace. - MySchizoBuddy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3orkut is in AFFILIATION with Google. It ins't owned by Google. Its owned by a Google Employee who goes by the name Orkut Büyükkökten. A Turkish software engineer, developed it as an independent project while working at Google
- KYDS3K, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2damn, you Myspace haters are some whiny-ass bitches. i admittedly don't use it as often as i used to, but i can't count the number of times that i've found out new things about acquaintances of mine simply by looking at their Myspace pages. i had no idea that my friend was a shoegaze fan until looking at his page - and i haven't seen him that often since we graduated college. it's also a great resource for marketing if you're a DJ (which i am) . . . so many things.
(and yes, i do have a life. too much of one, sometimes . . . ) - nokaagnew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2edit: @wheel
Excuse me. - culebra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I totally agree. I've noticed a trend among my friends that it's not as popular as it used to be. Especialy for those of us who graduated college, found a stable relationship, got married and a job. It's really of no relevence to me anymore and I am not alone. Their target audience is getting older.
- wheel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Google could have bought MySpace for half as much as it was sold to News Corp for. It was a bad investing decision.
@razei
You're a fool if you think that Orkut is nearly as popular as MySpace. I would guess that less than 3% of the nation has even HEARD of Orkut, let alone uses it. MySpace on the other hand, is wildly popular. - TechnoGuyRob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Google, why have you forsaken me?
- robystar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Interesting move by Google. Googlespace (or Orkut) hasn't caught on as they had hoped. I think if gayspace is Googlized it'll definitely corner a segment of the internet for google to do whatever the hell they want with.....which is pretty much feed em ads:/ Hooray beer...I mean Google!
- noGoodNamesLeft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Are you seriously making an attempt to get as many cliched grammatical errors into your post as possible?
Apostrophes where they shouldn't be, no apostrophes where they should be, misuse of "your"/"you're", misspellings, inconsistent capitalisation.... - mandarin, on 10/12/2007, -12/+13My faith in Google pretty much sunk to a new low...
- HeliumHigh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Is no-one looking at it? For google, this was mearly an investment. They get money. They aren't supporting myspace as much as their exploiting it. Is it evil? No. I hate myspace as much as the next guy, but it isn't evil by default. The idea is great, the execution is bad, and unfortunately, the users are often really crappy. I wouldn't let my kids on it without giving them a stern talking to, and a quick basics in good site layout and color schemes. As for google, good for them. They have basically one point of revenue... ads. Myspace will get a lot of people to click the ads. Google gets money. It all works! Google gets bigger, myspace continues to die slowly (hey, they aren't saving it) and we continue to not really care.
- GeneralFailure0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I have a myspace because sometimes I'm interested in seeing what my friends post on their accounts. I pretty much hate the way the site is set up and think it's ridiculous that a site that's so slow and unreliable is one of the most visited on the internet, but I don't see why anyone is upset about this deal. It's just google ads. It's not like google is endorsing myspace as a product or anything like that, it's strictly business and advertising. Good for google, really.
- thestrangeguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The reason why Murdoch bought MySpace was that he'd have access to a huge amount of data about people, who they interact with, what makes people popular, upcoming trends and all of the patterns of behaviour of millions of users. A whole online generation have submitted their tastes, their fears, their dreams to a monolithic database. This kind of information is mind blowing if you want to know how to target products at them (and for them).
Why should have Google bought MySpace? They would have made money from ads, but they have no need to buy MySpace for its database; they have their on copy cached. This is deal *worth* 900Million, Murdoch will get that cheque in installments. No point shelling out the whole lot in one go. - pcdave79, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So looks like Google is looking to boost traffic . . . MySpace having so much traffic and all . . . . they will generate revenue on their AdSense program and integrating that into the search panel on MySpace . . . sounds like a good investment model to me . . . only drawback is how long will MySpace continue to keep its popularity . . . especially since there are so many copy-cat clones of MySpace out there now . . .
- dstz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So we don't have to deal with MyPlace ?
- IznastY, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Long live myspace! muahahhaaaa... on a serious note, I don't understand why some of you guys are so against myspace, if you don't like it, don't use it, geeez.
- nokaagnew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That part made me laugh.
@well, et al.
I also was reminded of the fact that Google could have totally 'owned' it. Oh well. Probably not a big loss. - wafermouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As someone who hates MySpace but has to use it because of the friends on there, I hope the new money means that they'll contract the LJ guys to re-work their infrastructure. Using MySpace makes me almost physically ill.
- approxinfinity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I use it. Well, not that often, but I do a few times a day."
That's often man. I agree with what you're saying in general, though. - beercosoftware, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Will MySpace really make 900M with Google?
http://www.sitespaces.net/blog.php?viewblog&5207
Take what you want from this. I am not benefiting at all from this story. A lot of people say a lot of stuff in "the valley" and "the bay" area. I thought it would be cool for people to see some stats, even if it's against the TOS. - ParadoxCT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just hope that this will end thoes annoying "college girls are more fun" and "Hot gamer girls" ads which could probably cause seizures. Not the best ads for a site targeted at the under 18's.
- abff0164, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you really want myspace to go away, however long that might take, and I would love to see it disappear, there's a sure-fire way to do it. Simply have every parent or person over 40 join. The minute I mentioned that I was interested in making my own myspace page, my 26 year old dropped out. Seriously.
- mike503, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0actually i forgot to add
"with $580 million of cash put into my organization i could totally overhaul that bitch" - mike503, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i just wish myspace would clean itself up, improve itself so there's less bugs and add more servers/capacity so the goddamn thing worked consistently and wasn't up/down every minute and slow as *****.
- frank3000, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2***** YOU DIGGISUBERGAY -
you just joined digg today and you have already spammed us with 26 comments of "..... no digg. marked as lame"
***** OFF GO TO NETSCAPE AND DIE!! - culebra, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4I disagree. I've always felt that the myspace generation has relativly small amounts of money to do anything with other than buy beer and weed. Especially the college students. I've used myspace for a while, and it's not my kind of place for friend, but nonetheless I've never felt compelled to look at any ad online. Maybe I am just too old for that sort of groovy site or something. At any rate I maintain the myspace market is a very weak one and there is very little to gain from it.
- athlonmj, on 10/12/2007, -11/+10myspace really sucks donkey balls. that is all.
