- dannysullivan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+35Yep -- it's the anchor text doing it. NOODP wouldn't have helped. Looked into it, some comments from Google now in my story here:
http://searchengineland.com/070430-143605.php - lkmbrd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+31Annnnnnndddddddddd my server is down.
:-) - BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22Hammer time.
- cledford, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18I bet someone in the ODP is linking to https://checkout.google.com with the anchor text "use google checkout on hibidder com free" - and because the Google Checkout page doesn't have the no ODP tag, it is displaying what an ODP editor is using in some random category.
- vafada, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17@troublemaker
YOU are wrong.... hibidder.com didn't hijack anything. It's an issue/bug with GoogleBot and redirection. - istatic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Live: http://www.google.com/search?source=ig&hl=en&q=google+checkout

Read the above linked article. It explains what is actually going on, why this is a Google screw-up and NOT a hijack, and answers all the questions in the comments below. - HomieG6189, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8I have GOT to know how that one was pulled off!
I bet right now the "google sirens" are going off and all the employees are rushing to get it fixed.
...or not. - lkmbrd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5They managed to hijack the title in the SERPs, not hijack the actual site. So if you click it you're on the real Google Checkout website, not Hibidder.com.
- cledford, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3orrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr it was an accident
- Triffid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient-ff&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGGL,GGGL:2006-22,GGGL:en&q=define%3A+news
I'm thinking the second definition - benwellington, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The same thing is happening to google finance, but it's not quite as obvious.
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=off&c2coff=1&client=safari&rls=en&q=finance.google.com&btnG=Search - fishbert, on 10/12/2007, -14/+16Being the top result under a search for "google checkout"
!=
hijacking Google Checkout's homepage.
Buried as inaccurate. - davidrools, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2it seems that hibidder.com didn't even do it on purpose...they just had links to google checkout on all their item pages with "Use Google Checkout on HiBidder.com - Free" in the Alt text and google used it as the title for the Google checkout page. Odd because the google checkout page does have a TITLE in its code but maybe because the page isn't static, it didn't get indexed with that title.
- Nadinengland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If i was to guess, id go with what vafada said: "It's an issue/bug with GoogleBot and redirection."
- SebHughes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ha maybe this is a ploy to get more people to use checkouts and they are pullign are legs, Arghhhhh
- Netrilix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Well, just a second there, professor. We, uh, we fixed the *glitch*." ... "so it'll just work itself out naturally."
Should be easy enough to get that reference, even with part of the line taken out ;) - mjesales, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thanks for the reply - its a great summary
- I_am_so_smrt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nothing better to report.
- drewskyjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Digg Always smashes Wordpress when it is on a small, non-optimized server...ok, make that usually. Annoying, but not uncommon.
- Burmask, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thanks for setting us straight Danny!
- Xabora, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Its showing up on Google.UK now.
- JBstrikesagain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Thats really interesting. someone explain how it happened now ;-)
- whistle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This is insane. It still shows for me on Google SERPS for [google checkout]
- neoknight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's ok it happens to all us wordpress users. ;-)
- Drumrboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2its not a glitch... its a feature...
:-) - aura, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Marked as inaccurate. hibidder is higher in the page rankings, they have not hijacked the google checkout website.
- majorbta, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4No, it is a ploy to get you to go to his silly blog
- dawgma, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I don't get it... so when I click on the link, am I actually redirected to hibidders server, where everything looks like Google (address bar, logos...)? Or did they just manage to get their name included with a legitimate link to Google Checkout?
- jinglee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Is Google listening???
If they do, get that blogger banned..He has Adsense ads next to his profile picture! - miller99, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0this digg is too long11 ;0
- lkmbrd, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1@MysteryFCM
Nope, that's Google UK. - MysteryFCM, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4Seems they've fixed it ........
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=google+checkout&meta=
... but fishbert is right, this isnt hijacking .... - geekitechture, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1This is simply a case of a site that did a high degree of optimization for the search engines, and got so good at it they managed to hijack Google's top listing (not the site, just the Google search result) for Google Checkout as well. That's understanding how Google's crawler works to the nth degree, and I give them much respect for it. While hijacking Google's own listing was a bit extreme, if you want your site to rank well in search results for any keyword, you should memorize this guy's techniques and stamp the Cliff Notes version on your forehead so you will never forget it.
90% of your web page optimization for Google is done with your title, header tags, alt tags for images, and a generous but not too extreme sprinkle of naturally related keywords for the top search term you're after. In terms of SEO, this guy is a god. - rushfan, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1One of these days some big web-site is going to get irritated by an inaccurate story on Digg and sue to make them better verify accuracy. If you say it won't happen you're a fool and I hope you spill hot coffee all over yourself while driving.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0not getting it....so stupid...
- AllLitUp, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Shameless mirror of screenshot:

sorry for comment abuse - troublemaker, on 10/12/2007, -12/+4Actually, YOU are inaccurate. The URL belongs to Google. Here's a cut-and-paste from the #1 hit:

For your information it does the same thing for me on www.google.com.au. I dare say that nobody at google has ever searched for Google Checkout! - lkmbrd, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1That's odd then because the anchor text they use isn't formatted the same as the title that's displayed.
- Jon - enivid, on 10/12/2007, -14/+2Uhm... can someone explain to me why this is news?
