- netmancer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15That's what I like about Google.. they actually listen to user suggestions. Now if they'd just allow you to have multiple account windows open at the same time...
- Roger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I'm sure Google does listen to their users, but I wouldn't be suprised if they planned this feature all along.
- eastshores, on 10/27/2007, -4/+12Now.. I'm not sure why you had to bring MS into this? But.. since I have worked with MS products for a very long time I will counter. MS does listen to it's users, but they are a less powerful voice than it's developers. I have watched MS merge into an internet company, get sued back some, and then after being sued out of the ability to modify the "JAVA spec" ... re-invent their development platform with what we now know as the common language runtime. In doing so, they met the challenge of JAVA as well as open source / open standards by having the CLR and the C# language specification gain ISO and ECMA official standard status, as well as producing "community" code that was open and met the spec. It was a brilliant move on their part.
I can say that while MS can still.. and most likely always will need to improve, they are not in my experience ignorant of their users requests. IE was a by-product of the internet boom posing a threat to the traditional desktop software market. This had nothing to do with user requests at the introduction.
I honestly feel based on what I have seen and experienced as an MS oriented developer (I was gunning hard at JAVA and PHP before .NET was introduced) they are now resurrecting the IE team based on a series of complaints, some of which I participated in, that the platform lacking features that made it useable. In this case the platform was the browser. Check out http://channel9.msdn.com sometime, if you really think MS isn't interested in listening to it's customers. I spoke to Lenn, who essentially got Channel9 going within MS numerous times. It was ALL ABOUT bucking the old management and getting the program managers access to what the customers really wanted. MS has changed in the many years that they have been a factor in our field and society. Best to see the whole picture, and recognize some of the change. - plaunie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8they have that too under manage calendars -> notifications -> event reminders (pop up)
- NeoTSN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4They have alerts that can be sent to your cell phone (according to Diggnation) either already available, or in the works, for your day's events.
- hotpepper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Neither of those ways are syncing; fundamentally, they are subscribing or importing. With my PocketPC, I can currently enter a date in either the PocketPC or my calendar solution, and when I connect the PocketPC to the computer, they both update.
- slackerbox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You kind of already have this, as long as your software supports the iCal calendar data format. Of course it is a bit more manual than one would hope. You have to find your private iCal feed, download it, and then import the data into your app.
It's also pretty much a one-way thing, since as far as I know, you can't import data from your computer into the Google Calendar. - matija, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3when you go to the suggestions page for Google Calendar, the task list is a pre-made option that you can place as the subject of your selection.. which means that it's been obvious that a to-do list has been in the works for a while now..
still though, always nice to see proof of them implementing it :) - tuxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I would love a google homepage widget with my agenda :)
- kualla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@TimmyGUNZ: I thought about the labeling your tasks and putting them in your gmail but you then are lacking some features that most task lists include. For ex: frequently modifying, status, percentage complete, Organizing by things such as due date, % complete, importance, categorizing tasks, etc. Im sure you could think of a workaround for most of the stuff but it makes it much easier just clicking a box or selecting an option from a drop-down box in my opinion.
Good idea though - hotpepper, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I don't know about anyone else, but I'd rather have PDA synchronisation before I had a to do list.
- Roger, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I'd like a program to alert me of upcoming events in my calendars. Maybe they could add it to Gmail Notifier, or GTalk.
- zatacka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You actually can import Calender data from other apps into Google Calendar. Just has to be iCal format or use the same CSV format as Outlook. Importing from other apps should be the least one should be able to expect from such an app though. How else would it get people to transition to it?
- dayquil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1if bits of this code are making their way into production, it's likely it has been worked on for some time. it's not exactly an indication that google listens to its customers.
but on that note, everyone listens to their customers. you just may not be their customer, as they see it.
microsoft definitely has a big ear toward its paying userbase. - MemoryDump, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1why can't we just get a NOTEPAD in gmail? I hate having to store notes in my DRAFTS folder :(
- smartidiot, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1Checkout Google Notebook. - http://www.google.com/notebook/
- kualla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Really glad they are adding the tasks to their calendar, that is the only step holding me back from fully switching to Google calendar! Just need google internet(ISP) then I will be completly googalfied
- Opelious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This was actually my original complaint for not using gCal, but I've decided to make due in the meantime. To hear that a Task List might be in the works/released soon is great good news to me.
- TimmyGUNZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why not just email stuff to yourself in Gmail and give it a "notepad" tag or star it?
- fulldecent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That task list will be around any time now.
- brian7000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0there is a homepage widget http://www.tuaw.com/2006/04/13/howto-subscribe-to-a-google-calendar-using-ical/
- Quash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here's a very feature-rich Google Calendar module for your Google Personalized Homepage. To add multiple calendars, just add the module a second time and use a different private url. Handles recurring events, appt. times and lots of other options.
http://googlemodules.com/module/570/ - pathogenal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone know of a way to get the ical or xml functions in calender to where I can get outlook to work with it without having to import/ export?
- dscanland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You should check out Google's Notebook feature for Firefox. It seems like it could have some great results if you are researching online. http://www.google.com/notebook/
- jdoree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I use Gmail as a type of Notepad by using the Save As Draft feature. That way, you can go back anytime and edit / make changes. You can have as many entries as you want. It's very handy.
- jkoirjm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0so where the hell is it.....? google is so freaking slow with adding any new features
- aiforbes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Try GooSync or OggSync - both work with Outlook on PC and Mobile Outlook on Wm5/6
- strabes, on 10/27/2007, -1/+1@eastshores: If Microsoft listens to their users why is Vista crippled with DRM? Why does IE not comply with development standards? Why can Vista not be virtualized? Why can XP and Vista only be installed on 1 motherboard per license according to the EULA?
- natmaster, on 10/27/2007, -7/+7Whereas Microsoft will often ignore users' suggestions unless they are a major customer. Even after adding a semi-public bug database for Internet Explorer, many bugs (such as not supporting important web standards) are simply marked as "done - by design."
- Roger, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Yeah, I think cell phone notification is already done. But a popup on my computer would also be nice.
- minonda, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0If Google would just have Notepad, like Yahoo, I could desert Yahoo completely, as I've been wanting to do since learning a long time ago that they don't give a damn about their users. I have Google email and calendar but I'm still going to Yahoo for my Notepad.
- digismack, on 10/27/2007, -4/+1Another good web-app for creating tasks lists is Ta-Da List by 37signals. http://www.tadalist.com
- NeoTSN, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Excellent...I just set mine up
- vinterstille, on 10/27/2007, -5/+1Listen to this Google Calendar team: OMA DS (Sync ML)
- jrbrewin, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2just ticking off the items in the the outlook functionality list. :-))
- agent6, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0ya I set Google calendar in my background so I always see it and it gives me event reminders too.....

What is Digg?
