- Anubis2051, on 10/12/2007, -1/+51Why does everything cool like this happen in a garage? Why not the basement or the living room?
- devolved, on 10/12/2007, -0/+41"Claw Space" sounds scarier.
- doctornkul, on 10/12/2007, -1/+39Because in the Silicon Valley (and California in general) nobody has a basement.
- TwinkieTheKid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+33that 70's show had a pretty fun basement.
- arudgick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+27im going to put my pc in the garage an hope for the best. this computer room just isn't doing the job!
- keikun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17that's a nice looking garage
- metalhead3767, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15$1,700 per month for a garage! Holy *****. What do they charge for a room in California with heat ac and electricity?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15$1700 a month isn't that kind of hefty rent on a garage?
- Reliant, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19I'm in my early 40's. Every time I hear of a company that started out in a garage, sometimes the comment is made that they wish they were back in that garage. Not so with Google! They have succeeded in such a huge way that they have set the standard for new upstart companies to follow by!
- pexor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13"Google asked The Associated Press not to publish the property's address, although it can easily be found on the Internet using the company's search engine."
Hahaha. - Schrade, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Claw space? Uh.. perhaps you mean "The Crawl Space"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10property vaule in that area will triple because of this purchase.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9That depends JaceFuse. Is it your parent's garage?
- adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I'm sure they just googled for one in the area....
- spoooon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Seems very hefty for a garage but it worked out well for everyone in the end it seems. Then again, $1.1-1.3 million for a 1,900 sq foot house seems hefty as well when compared to housing in other parts of the country.
- zdiggler, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Because they don't have basements in california. That why deadbodies are found in claw space there.
- BluKnight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yes, now when I get out to Silicon Valley, I'll have to have a look at the Google Museum.
- Atomic1fire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5its cheaper
- tim507, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7It took them this long to get it back? it must have been a nice little payment when they aquired it...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6tax free.... free parking too.
- zdiggler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4$1700/month for a Garage.. Welcome to California.. lol
Actually at those time, getting a apartment for rent was hard to do. I remember economy was booming there was NO place to rent in my city any where! Apartments have No Vancacy signs like they were motels or something. Rent was expensive, $1500/month for a 1bdrm apt in ghetto, your next door neighbor is a local crack dealer etc.. - rcflyr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It depends on where you are in California. L.A. you can rent an O.K. 2br apartment for the 1000->2000 range. In my area (still in CA) you can get the same thing for 450->700.
- seibed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I wonder if they need a caretaker? I would gladly live there for a nominal fee.
hmmm... could get options with that job? - spoooon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3They didn't exactly 'get it back' since they never actually had it to begin with. The article states that they simply rented the space for 5 months from an individual (that happens to now work for google) that wanted help paying her mortgage.
- johnnyrocket, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3So what's the address?
- Seidoger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I hope that the rent included the right to use the swing on the tree.
- Vizin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The mystery is, where do tech startup guys park their cars?
- sylvanis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@spooon
It's all relative to the cost of living. http://www.homefair.com/homefair/calc/salcalc.html
someone living in Milwaukee WI making $100,000 would need to make over $150,000 in Anaheim CA - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think I need to move my computer in the garage and continue my coding there. More chance of something brilliant happening.
- TheSpook, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2$1700/mo for a garage? Not bloody likely. WTF?
I own a much larger house for a much lower monthly mortgage, and love it. Of course, I have to deal with snow, but I'll break my back once in awhile for the savings.
Sure wish someone would pay me that much per month for my garage. I'd let them use my restroom for free, too! - elroy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2in ghetto, your next door neighbor is a local crack dealer etc.
location, location, location! you'd never have to go far to get your crack. - blattnew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love thinking that such a big company can startin a garage, its really cool...
- Sweetdelight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The only thing to top this would be, Apple buying the garage steve jobs, steve wozniak, and apple employee's 0 - 10 built the first apples from.
From Steve jobs parents old house. - Laurentvw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does anyone know the address where that garage is located?
- person, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Because if they say that they lived in a basement, usually it means theyre still living with their parents, and nothing cool comes out of that.
- catullus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1no funniness as of yet, either
- Seidoger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Lol yeah.. Probably in offices
Hahaha - Botrax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Isn't this a sign that Google has way too much money?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1" had agreed to lease her garage for $1,700 per month because she wanted some help paying the mortgage."
at 1,700 they might as well have rented out a whole apartment instead of someone elses garage - Seidoger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1And the swing on the tree!
Lol. - etnu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In 1998 / 1999 you couldn't rent an apartment the size of a garage in SV for $1700 a month. Today that might land you a decent sized townhouse in East Palo Alto.
- punkrockxtian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm guessign that since they were developing a search engine they were probably using alot of electricity.
- swilber1579, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm curious about that as well. One article I read narrowed it down to Santa Margarita Ave in Menlo Park.
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=Santa+Margarita+Ave,+Menlo+Park,+CA+94025&ie=UTF8&z=15&om=1&iwloc=A - JEmerson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Married geeks, usually the kind of person who would have one, aren't allowed to use the basement and get the garage as a subtle hint to get some work done on the car. Geeks as a whole really aren't that great at understanding what the average guy one the street likes, and their software tends to show it. Married geeks usually have the empathy to grasp the non-geek viewpoint, and as a result are seen more often as the creaters of startups that actually hit the news.
- JaceFuse, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4I wonder if a room ABOVE the garage counts?
- dovodovo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Perhaps I should rent out space in my '82 VW Vanagon Camper that I rarely drive. If a garage = $1700 per month, perhaps the Vanagon should be worth $1000 per month? It comes with a fridge, sink and stove! No hot-tub as of yet, however.
- cdgore, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Stanford tuition?
- Sweetdelight, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1http://www.google.ca/maps?hl=en&safe=off&q=google+inc&near=Menlo+Park,+CA,+USA&ie=UTF8&cid=37453889,-122181111,6295828416201857158&li=lmd&z=14&t=m
maybe? - Celeron, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3You must be living in a crappy city or neighborhood if your rent is that low.
- nayr, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1they rented a garage? why not an office?
