Digg for actual jobs in Michigan! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15i think its definitely time to add a Google section to the sidebar.
- das7282, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I'm digging it because I live in Michigan (although Ann Arbor isn't close enough to where I live for me to think I could work for them).
- Arcadian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I agree, I live in Michigan currently. Viva Google.
( Though I don't think they have any use for a game designer.)
Whoa. Idea. Google Game Studio. My brain broke. Derr. - shertzerj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Until recently I lived in Michigan for a couple years, and I agree with the article - the state BADLY needs that. It's hard enough finding a crappy regular job in the state, let alone a tech job (I've tried). If I still lived there I would be throwing my resume at them immediately.
- EnricoFermi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I'm 45 minutes away from ann arbor, I'm making up my resume right after I finish this sentence.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9As a University of Michigan student, this is awesome.
- mcochran, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6No way, EVERYBODY I know uses "Michigander".
- mrgreen4242, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5No kidding... Too bad they're over an hour away from me. :( I'm looking at the listings right now, and I don't see anything about pay-per-click or AdWords. Looks to me like the A2 facility is going to be part of Google's effort to digitize books/libraries. "Book Scanning" is the common keyword in the job listings for Ann Arbor.
- MixedSpleens, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This is amazingly cool, and an intresting choice for google, but not completly unexpected. Michigan being one of the only states that is truly struggling right now (last in job creation, tons of underemployed people) they can pick from the cream of MI's Crop, and can afford to keep their employees up to a good standard of living for much less money than they could in the Bay Area.
- Paladin27, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I live in Michigan too, this is great news! I can't wait till they start posting more jobs!
- joehobbes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"Google cofounder Larry Page, an East Lansing native and 1995 engineering graduate from the University of Michigan, was a major supporter of the decision to locate in Ann Arbor, Granholm said."
I was wondering where they got Ann Arbor from... - fodder650, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This story isn't pointless though. It's showing the way to bring back the IT jobs to the US. Usually this would be followed by the words "Bangladesh" and not "Ann Arbor". For that reason alone it's worth a digg.
Maybe this is what the other states should be looking at to bring IT home. Google has a huge Indian and Chinese presence. So I'm glad to see our overlords in Michigan. - LMN8R, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4While the nation's economy is improving in general, Michigan's has been in the crapper since 9/11. Business is hurting all around, car companies are leaving and GM is doing horribly - any high tech jobs are welcome. The fact that it's google is even better!
- nocircleno, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Go Michigan!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The article doesn't give any details on the facility, other than that it will be new. It is too early to say whether it will be Googleplex-esque or not. Why wouldn't it be?
- mcochran, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5At least you admit that Ann Arborites are your overlords. That's a good first step.
//lived in Ace Deuce
//go blue!!! - xamox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Throw it up for michiganders! Sweet, I have one more semester till I get my software engineering degree. There are only 9 jobs posted at the moment [http://www.google.com/support/jobs/bin/topic.py?loc_id=1100&dep_id=1173&by_loc=1], and they are all advertising related.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Daisuke, A2 is easily the nicest college town in Michigan and one of the best places to live in the US. It's got the cultured and stimulating community that would fit Google.
- toxicredm, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Being a former conservative and still a slightly right leaning libertarian I have to laugh at seeing the words 'unbiased' and 'NYT' (New York Times) in the same sentence.
- joehobbes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Very true.
Fortunately, I'm pretty happy with my job, but it will be incredible to get some new blood around here and also have another place to look into if I need another job - warox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3As a resident of MI since preschool, it's definitely only Michigander.
- Toast1185, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I live in East Lansing and go to school in AA and I bet they will have thousands of applications to sift through considering the state of our economy
- lnfalandino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I have a tech job in Michigan that isn't tied to the auto industry, but I'm a consultant. My firm is out of Grand Rapids and while I like my job a lot, the traveling is beginning to wear on me. While I'd love to work for Google in MI, it seems that they aren't hiring what I'd be interested in working in (i.e. research/engineering). So, not the best for me personally, but great for the state. I'm really glad to hear this news! If only they'd opened this office in downtown Detroit... ;)
- MixedSpleens, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@ThetaDot Every College town in america is overwhelmed with red cups. Your reaction seems to not be to Ann Arbor on the whole but to the student areas, which I think is a important distinction. Ann Arbor has tons of redeeming qualities.
- p5ychop3nguin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The total income is very offset by the gaint auto coperation heads the jobless rate is one of the worst in the country and if you look at the per capita income (instead of total income) MI is actually #29.
From http://www.theoaklandpress.com/stories/070806/bus_2006070805.shtml
"Michigan's rate fell from 7.2 percent in April to 6 percent in May, but most experts say the drop was largely the result of many people simply dropping out of the work force. The number is expected to jump when June unemployment is reported later this month.
Only three other states have worse unemployment: Mississippi with 7.3 percent, Alaska at 7.1 percent and South Carolina with 6.5 percent." - dm1030, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wish I lived just a bit closer to Ann Arbor. Unfortunately live near Flint were jobs currently suck. Stuck working in a machine shop since I could not find any computer work around here. Hopefully they will be around for quite a few years and will be able to get something with them when I am able to move to that area
- p5ychop3nguin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Everyone says Michigander. Michiganian is too clumsy.
- Seanpr123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hah, I goto MTU but have lived in Ann Arbor my whole life. This is fantastic news. Thankfully I already have a nice tech intership job during the summer, but Im really happy for the people I know who this might give them a huge boost in life.
- bilz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6This is really good news. As a citizen of A2 and Michigan, I can say that we really need this. Our state is really hurting financially. Please leave such negativity at the door.
- Kilroy2004, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Because it is purely for AdWords... that means that although it might be another structure like the GooglePlex, it is not going to be filled with their 'idea people.'
- rmmcclay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Regardless of whatever thoughts Google Adwords might evoke; I think it's cool Google is bringing jobs to Michigan.
- BrandonTurner, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8As a Michigan State student it is even more awesome. ;)
- Suits, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'd happily welcome Google facilities being erected all over the place than Wal-Mart any day.
- tiuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm from Windsor and have family from MI, I've never heard anything but Michigander.
- ObiusX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4But obviously Michigan Tech graduates will have a better chance of getting a job there.
- mrgreen4242, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hey we had our first jobless rate dip in like 3 years a couple months ago! Of course, it was a result of the population shrinking as people moved out of state to find jobs, but still!
- ChiliFrei64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is all sorts of good news for Michigan.. With me living in michigan.. this is absolutely a great thing. However, keep in mind that any new BIG things like this in Michigan include HUGE tax breaks for the company creating the jobs. They have been using this method in Detroit for about 4 years.. and Detroit (as a city) is broke. Its gotta start somewhere though........
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2mrgreen4242, I've been seeing those book scanning listings for months now. I don't think they're related, at all, to the new Google facility planned for the area.
- stranflow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I also live in Michigan and think this great news. Michigan needs to lose its dependance of the big 3 automobile companies. The auto industry needs a revamp to be reconstituted and Michigan needs to move toward high tech. It'd be sweet to work for Google. Maybe get a ride in the new 767 Sergei and Larry are building. ;-)
- joehobbes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2ditto
- MixedSpleens, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2True! And believe me I love my state, I see a HUGE untapped potential in it, and think that the opportunities here are huge. The one thing is though, I believe that a big portion of the working population is underemployed at the moment. They have cruddy jobs, and are not being utilized at their full potential.
But don't get me wrong, I think our state is doing a good job, despite the conditions that we now have. Its hard when your major industry can't compete with cheep offshore labor, which is why we MUST have a diverse job base, and why google is an awesome thing. - jtwilkins, on 04/03/2009, -0/+2Google is all ready a big force in Ann Arbor they are paying students great wages working on the book scanning project. I am guessing they have had good results and a good workforce from the area so they are investing in more jobs.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i wish i was closer then a 1 hour and 30 min drive to ann arbor
- bilz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@ Popdmb
You can make anything look good with numbers... of course that is Gross... and a HUGE chunk of that comes from the auto makers (GM, Ford especially). They are laying people off like crazy, and loosing TONS of money. Any auto-related jobs (Delphi, for example) are in turn laying people off. In turn, our housing market has tanked. Detroit, as a city, is in dire straights... less than 800,000 people in a city that can hold 3 million. They are doing better, but we need this. Our state is still in a recession as the rest of the country (as a whole) seems to be doing better.
Althoug a lot of money is coming in, that money is going to a specific industry that is failing. - tacojohn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My bosses daughters go to the same elementary school and Page did...kinda cool. Too bad I'm moving to AZ in a few weeks (tech job market sucks here- Michigan).
Still givin' if up for the U.P. though! - Corvillus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm a Windsorite here too, and the only thing I've ever heard people use is Michigander.
- p5ychop3nguin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Did anyone else notice the tags in the title? Lol at Detroit Free Press for not knowing HTML
- UNL1M1T3D, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's about time Michigan moves away from the industrial scene and more towards technology. This will really help out our dismal economy in Michigan, so this is really sweet.
- TheDarkTipper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Finally, good tech in Michigan.
Which is where I live. -
