- DoubtfulSalmon, on 10/12/2007, -30/+101The bit where *Americans* somehow think that they're *free* never ceases to amaze nor amuse me!
- vogelzang, on 10/12/2007, -2/+70How the hell did that T in the description jump so far to the right?
- SouthernDigger, on 10/12/2007, -7/+57i can't beleive that there are still places like that in this world... freedom really needs to catch on a bit more.
- yichen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+45.ca is ok here.
seems my government is a little bit stupid. :P - phatvolvo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+43ten bucks says we never hear of yichen again...
- TheComputerMutt, on 10/12/2007, -5/+44Digg should filter anything that looks remotely like "Google" to "Google".
"Goggle" => "Google"
"Googol" => "Google"
"Gogle" => "Google"
"MSN" => "Google"
It'd be better for all of us. - yichen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+34It is true. I am a Chinese. The problem is wired. You can open the homepage of Google and search just for once. If you try to go to next page, then it shows lost connection.
Gmail is Fine for me. - szelij, on 10/12/2007, -1/+29Maybe if there wasn't something called "self-interest", that could happen. But "freedom" as its called is a side-show compared to money and economics. Even the US acknowledges this..
- TheSpellingNazi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25Well. atleast Digg isnt blocked in China.
:) - antron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23ten bucks says we never hear of yuyafox again...
- iFelix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21Yet...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19What happens if you try searching at www.google.ca?
- masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -5/+24You forget that democracy always votes its freedom away, anyway.
Oh, and Grimdotdotdot -- forcing democracy is a good example of this thing called, 'irony'. - yuyafox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17 in china the communist party controls everything....
but.in fact.....almost every people who is smart never get fooled by the government...they know the world better than what you guys can imagine...
i'm a chinese who is smart enough to know there's a place called digg.
. - Grimdotdotdot, on 10/12/2007, -20/+37Yes, more countries should have democracy forced on them.
Maybe the invading forces could try and leave a few more potential voters alive, though.
Hmm...
"I can't use Google" vs "My house is being hit by missiles launched from 50 miles away and my family is all dead."
Tough call... - superdigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16yeahhh I'm in beijing and google's been blocked on-and-off for the past week :/ no fun.
- GinsuGuy585, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16They already do it in china
Google => Jail
Porn => Jail
Free Speech => Jail
Piracy => Economy - e3mw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14I've been traveling in China for the past two weeks. First, in Beijing, I couldn't connect to Google OR Gmail. Then in Qingdao the same problem. Now I am in Suzhou and It still doesn't work. From what I hear from the locals Google has been blocked for quite some time. But most of the computer competent citizens here in China are already getting around the block either via Proxy or by websites that work around it.
- danraydotorg, on 10/12/2007, -7/+21It's 2006. Is it seriously still possible to mistype google.com?
- bigpixl, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18You're both retarded.
- yichen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14The worst. We'll never hear of digg.com again in China.
- mishakorea, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Information control, whether obvious or oblivious, whether in the US or in China, is a crime against all of humanity!
- repins, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13someone should create a web site where people from inside China can request searches and people outside China can run the Google search and post the results back on the website.
It probably would not last long....but it does sound rebellious enough to catch one :) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Absolutely. I wonder if they can still use google.ca (canada) or the American Samoa Google (URL escapes me...).
- Alphabet, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13or a really really slow left finger.
- repins, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12So I guess that Google giving in to the totalitarian government and co opting their "do no evil" mantra gained them nothing. In the end the ChiComs just turned them off anyway....I am not really surprised.
- matts0344, on 10/12/2007, -10/+20"The bit where *Americans* somehow think that they're *free* never ceases to amaze nor amuse me!"
At least google isn't blocked for us. - Tochi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Very very fast typing. ;)
- jamarcus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11If you're going to be "The Spelling Nazi," you'd better get it straight: Tiananmen Square.
- meihan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I am in China too, and smart people here can get around it. I am using Tor and all the banned sites work great. I'd bet Yichen is using something like this too.
- captnkurt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I'm trying not to panic here, but it appears that GooglTe.com is not available here in the US of A either! Those wily Chinese...
- catoutfit, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14ten bucks says we never hear of meihan again.
- Chuck95, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@shoveler
My boss is pretty much a world leading plant microbiologist. He goes to China almost yearly to their big bio-tech and agriculture conferences (Nobel prize winner level type things). He said the difference between us and China is astounding. They are wiping the floor with us right now. Their research facilities make ours look like a 3rd world country. I'm just saying that just because they have a lot of social rights issues, doesn't mean they can't excel. I have a feeling a lot of the censorship goes both ways. We probably don't hear about a lot of the advances they've made... - TheSpellingNazi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Anyway. Go to www.google.cn and search for Tianamen (sp?) square.
Then go to www.google.com and search for same thing. Do an image search. Different results - Grimdotdotdot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7It's sad, because you're wrong.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Oh please. The US and China are both beautiful countries with much to offer. Some of their leaders can be pretty retarded, but what country does that NOT happen in?
- detonate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Maybe digg needs a way for us to correct mistakes in submissions?
- televisible, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Be careful of your Gmail they scan it, from time to time.
- repins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Communist is not evil, the problem is the fact that the Government is made up of Human Beings. Regardless of the Government system you live under, their will be people in that Government who seek to expand their personal power and wealth at the cost of everything else.
- barbobot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6http://tor.eff.org
aut viam inveniam aut faciam! - dbre2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Probably this one:
EyesofPrisms> and ou are an uytter newb
KC48348751>dude
KC48348751>how did that y move over like 12 characters - dkarlson, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12America isn't free. You're just allowed to think that you are, providing you continue consuming and watching TV.
- yichen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4wheremyarm. maybe our Chairman Hu JingTao is using Tor now. LOL.
There is no punishment. How to punish X00,000,000 people? Nowdays, Everybody has rights to put Police on court, just only no one want to do it alone now. I guess we need more group activities in China to fight for our rights. - Tochi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Yeah, it's possible, but it's obvious that he copied and pasted the description from the article's first line. I doubt the T in Google is anything more than a glitch in the system...
Hmmm.... deja vu... - t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I can understand getting a letter one out of place, but "he GooglTe.com" - that's just silly.
- superdigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4that'd be tedious and slow, IMO. we can just use proxies.
- yichen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4yes, meihan, I do have Tor. But you know, Tor is not fast enough for me to switch in my area.
Just a Google, not a big deal. :P at least I can use Yahoo search.
I'll use Tor when our government blocks almost every foreign website. :P Oops, maybe then even Tor may not work. - MattL920, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I don't know what that link goes to, but what's ironic is my company firewall blocked it. So... what was that about being free in america compared to china?
- DROB003, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Oh, Im sure the availability of the internet is rampant outside of the major metropolitan areas....haha
- anzhilan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Just another data point, I live in Wuhan, Hubei, in central China and I have had no trouble with www.google.com or any other Google services/servers.
I also traveled to several cities recently, including Beijing and Shanghai and I didn't experience any issues. My experience in the past has been that some ISPs have trouble, and some don't (at least not often).
Of course I could be completely misinterpreting my experiences. In any case, as of this posting, Google is fine in central China. -
