A rep from GoDaddy has Called and "cleared up the misunderstanding" they Will restart the DNS services for MyBitTorrent.com and allow MyBittorrent to freely transfer to another registry of their choice. - giocruz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6MYBITTORRENT HAS BEEN FREED AGAIN 5 MINUTES AGO.
-----------------
GoDaddy released the domain and apologized to the administrators of myBittorrent.com.
In a few hours the domain will be working again and the site will be restarted with a FRESH NEW LAYOUT!
Greetings,
Rex
Administrator myBittorrent.com - Virak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"Will they allow them to go to other hosting companies, or are they locked into godaddy?"
From the article:
"Mybittorrent can be reclaimed by paying 50$ as the suspension letter states:
If you wish to transfer your domain name to another registrar, we first require that you pay a $50 administration fee before your domain name can be transferred."

- lordsandwich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Dugg to see how Alex and Kevin handle this possible conflict of interest.
- tazamore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Not smart.
Once you assume a role of repsonsibility for your customers content then lawyers come after you instead the customer. Not a smart move, GoDaddy. - TheDarkTipper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I hope they talk about this on Diggnation.
- jumbee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"This week's episode of Diggnation is brought to you by GoDaddy.com. GoDaddy.com... All your torrents are belong to us!"
- SniperGX1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm glad they cleared up the misunderstanding, I was about to move all my domains somewhere else. I'm suprised the digg police didn't remove this story.
- Beanlover, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Bob Parsons needs to be slapped down by ICANN or whoever has the authority to do so. I can understand why he may want to do stuff like this but it is NOT within his legal rights to do this (IANAL).
- tokyomonster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hmm, I smell a mob brewing again...This is rediculous. If [most] of you would read the COMMENTS and read the ARTICLE you would see that remarks like "BOYCOTT GODADDY UNZZ PIRATES TORRENTING FOR EVARRR"..are being made with out any real thought on the whole matter. This is exactly how major misunderstandings that get people in a lot of trouble start. What it boils down to, essentially, is to RTFA and RTFC.
- FireDawg451, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3There has been an update to this blog GoDaddy is restoring service check
- syda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3uh oh - seems Diggnation is gonna need some new sponsors
- valis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3GoDaddy rocks. Excellent service, reasonable cost, you get great control over the domain.
Geeze. Next time you make a mistake in judgement, should we all call for your beheading? - chrisduffer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"What are you talking about? You do realize that 100% legitimate stuff is traded through torrentspy and mininova, right?"
True, but a huge amount of illegal stuff is. Theres why most people go there. I know I do and I won't deny it. But them preventing criminal activity by suspending a domain in my mind is perfectly ok. You may start the crap about "supplying .torrent files is ok", but com on!! Its the same as your landlord kicking you out for selling crack out of the flat you rent off him - valis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3*shakes head*
Sorry to have to say this ... but some of you religious zealots are just plain stupid. - tavisjohn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2A month ago GoDaddy prevented people running MacOS from accessing sites registered with their service:
http://digg.com/apple/GoDaddy.com_Hates_Mac_Users
Now this? It apears that GoDaddy has gotten to big for it's own good. If GoDaddy want's to limit the type of content that uses their service, then they need to update their TOS, and send a warning letter to everyone who has been "Grandfathered" in that the TOD has changed and that they either have to alter their content to meet the new TOS, or they have to find a new hosting/domain service.
You can't just change the rules 1/2 way through the game! Booo on GoDaddy! You have to give FAIR WARNING to your customers. Just pulling the plug, and demanding $50.00 is being a piriate! - ifonly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I own torrentforums.com with godaddy
- hax0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Popodopolus, Theodopolus" is a perfectly legitimate Greek name. (seriously)
- tyrantbuilt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2h0dg3s... um... isn't the point of Digg to "digg" things on the web? And as far as I am aware practically every "digg" on digg.com links to a blog...
- celeb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2this is going to turn very ugly
- tokyomonster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Skaught, read the comments/updated article. Thanks.
- tyrantbuilt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2actually the editors of Digg did erase the first post regarding this problem.. I think that was a real shame, sensorship doesnt belong on a "open community" type site. Also just to update everyone on the situation here is the new post http://digg.com/links/_BitTorrents_saved_again_GoDaddy_does_the_right_thing_
- nogami, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"No way I'm going to boycott GoDaddy. So what ... they make a decision based on some notion of legal responsibility, then back track when they are shown the error of it in retrospect."
You don't "get it" do you? The fact that they made this decision at all means that they're actively pursing ways to shut down torrent sites. The fact that this particular move was legally dodgy and wouldn't hold water doesn't mean that they won't try something like that again.
The bottom line is that they obviously don't want torrent-related sites on their service, so it's probably wise to switch to another registrar before they find another "more legal" way to go-about the same thing. - SniperGX1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Damn, they are making them transfer somewhere else, I thought GoDaddy would do the right thing, well now they will lose all my business and everyone I know as well. Too bad, they were good for awhile, now they have to go side with the MPAA/RIAA and other corporate shills. ***** them.
- InvisionUK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You know, after reading the update that Mybittorrent.com have their domain back in their own hands, I read the comment (posted before the update):
"hopeless war... theyr gonna loose"
Oh, don't you just love fatalists? Especially when they're wrong? Speaking of which, there's a lot of fatalists on digg, but I won't go into that.
Digg just for that excellent comment. - valis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4No way I'm going to boycott GoDaddy. So what ... they make a decision based on some notion of legal responsibility, then back track when they are shown the error of it in retrospect.
Those are the indicators of a good company. No one is perfect.
Some of you people need to calm down, think rationally, and get off your pedestals. - brandonhines, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3""Surely it should be:
GoDaddy Acts Responsibly
no?""
"What are you talking about? You do realize that 100% legitimate stuff is traded through torrentspy and mininova, right?"
But 99% of the traffic isn't legit. - Matt2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2> Get lost, you're not wanted here. I'm not saying we're all pirates, but we all believe in our rights, if I can see it on TV for free and tivo it, I should be able to download it. If I own the DVD, I should be able to make a backup copy.
And I believe in my rights too. I frequently make backups of my own purchases, and abhor the rediculous limitions imposed by the DMCA. Here's a hint, your rights and freedoms extend up to the point where they infringe on someone elses. People downloading Quake 4 from a torrent do not fall under the aegis of "Freedom". It's selfish. It's self-defeating. And just because it's on the Internet and you think it's fun, doesn't make it right. - tyrantbuilt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes godaddy has the right to pick who to allow to register or host DNS with them however refusing to release the domain unless we pay a $50 fee to to them is out of line.
- einsteindesign, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Good for them.
If someone is getting their ass kicked on the street, and 20 people walk by (or worse, stop to look), cheers to the one person willing to risk their own ass and step in to do something.
It's within the province of any registrar to pretty much do whatever they want with your domain. Sucks, but it's true. Each of them have their own spin on the boilerplate, but they all have provisions for things like this. Verisign's agreement is (or was, haven't used them for years) particularly one-sided.
You don't have to be a suckup to the RIAA to respect the law. Quit kidding yourself; you're not some digital vigilante sticking it to the man. You're a common ***** thief who has rationalized the acquisition of something just because you wanted it. And before you international kiddies get your panties in a knot, go read the Berne Convention. - headzoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Link to stories not to blogs."
There is no other story *****, the blog is the story. Isn't GoDaddy the same company that has commercials with girls jiggling their boobs? And now they want to take the high road? - MrBester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Charging $50 for what is most normally an automated process is extortionate. Personally, I don't rent domains, I buy them (alright then, lease), meaning that *I* control the domain name and can transfer it to another registrar whenever I like for nothing (gandi.net).
- jholdaway, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't know if it is lying to make money on referrals.. The digg or alex promo codes are used to track how well the advertisement is doing. Think about the radio shows that say "Tell them 'Bob & Joe' sent you to get free delivery of your king sized mattress at 'Sleep World'" If there was such a show they would not tell you that the more people who listen to them the more they will get.
I think it is very honest as they do say it is a sponsor and have never pretended it was a recommendation. I know I support diggnation (although I'm to cheep/poor to not wait a week for the vid) and would put in their code next time I renew weather or not the product is eligible for 10% off. - Mysk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1eh, if they had signed up for GoDaddy's affiliate program then they would get no money by telling people to type www.GoDaddy.com into their browser. Folks would have to clickthrough a link and then buy the service for Rev3 to get any kickback.
Also, I use the GoDaddy.com affiliate program, and this is what the affiliate link looks like:
http://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-1861165-10378493
(the above example is an actual aff link, don't click it unless you're actually interested, which I doubt)
This is the Diggnation link:
https://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/default.asp?isc=dig11a
Additionally, Kevin and Alex routinely read from a script that their sponsors give to them. This has been pretty obvious on a number of occasions. What they tell to their audience is in that script. Saying that either of these two people are deliberately lieing to their listening base is very harsh and just wrong.
It's also pretty silly to assume that Rev3 uses a simple, unprofessional affiliate system.
I'm not a Kevin or Alex fanboy, though I'll admit that I'm envious in some ways of what appears to be their life style (I don't envy their busy schedules though, lol), but accusing them of lieing to everyone to make a quick buck is pretty low, and it's just not happening. - chrisduffer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I'm a software developer who stopped downloading pirated ***** from dialup BBSes when I was 14. Get over yourself"
This! With bells on. It would be nice if there was a "Digg for grown-ups" where there wouldn't be the crap stories digged/dugg by the kids and more useful ones like "How To Pay 50% Less Tax On All Your Savings" We can but dream - Jaymoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1www.namecheap.com
- tyrantbuilt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1DrDigg... the domain was locked unless we agreed to pay a $50 fee but they have now waved that fee thanks to digg and m-ook. in the mean time they agreed to proved our DNS again.
- jholdaway, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just switched from godaddy for hosting to these guys http://www.bluehost.com/track/thedunge/dungeon I found out about them from my WOW guild (thedungeonmasters.com) and they rock. Its like 6 domains for less than ten bucks or something (i cant remember cause i paid for 2 years at once).
I used to be a godaddy only guy (back when they weren't big and network solutions lost the monopoly). I still use them for registration, but i stoped hosting a few months ago. (although the new free hosting with purchase stuff on Diggnation they were talking about has got me interested again.. ) - alucinor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Title should read
"GoDaddy Attacks Warez Sites"
The fact that they're using BitTorrent as opposed to FTP or HTTP should be moot. - aigirl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1SENARIO: What would happen if a user was to post a link on digg directly to copyrighted material. The copyright owner than complains to godaddy.com, godaddy than responds by suspends digg.com. Basically that is exactly the same thing. get it?
- diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I hope they talk about this on the next diggnation podcast.
- chrisduffer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"There are many legitimate uses for a Toyota Tacoma. They can also be used for illegal activity, such as running from the police. Does that mean the Toyota dealership should take my Tacoma because they think I am doing something illegal with it?"
Maybe not, but if they could stop you from starting your car and the Police asked them to because you robbed your local music/video store I'm sure they would. - kokobaroko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1and one more thing - forget about mentioning this story on diggnation.
Diggnation has no fixed sponsor deal with godaddy!!! They got referral deal, they are getting paid for referrals. No referrals = no money.
This is the worst kind of a deal (to work on a commision) when you sell *****, because after a while you realise that only way to sell ***** is to LIE about it, tell people it smells nice and has nice color ..
That exactly happened very quickly with Alex and Kevin - they LIED about $1.99 domain prices (1.99 was not an actual price, it was a PART of a price)
It worked the first time, so they are now false advertising godaddy on every episode. - Combathangar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14 months of solid advertising I'd listened too on several podcasts, and they payed for just got made worthless by one ignorant move. I dont care if they 'corrected' anything. They acted without reasonable cause, care, and forethought, as evidenced by the quick reversal. Its just this type of BS that brings companies from the top to the bottom.
-----------------------------quote--------------------------------
ok, so all torrent sites might want to leave GoDaddy. Why would everyone else want to move? If you run a legal/normal site then what is the problem with them?
-----------------------------endquote---------------------------
DUH, there is nothing illegal about bit-torrent or torrent sites. The problem is that any company that would act without properly thinking about things has a major issue. What happens when they decide your 'normal' site offends albino penguins who suffer from Diet Dr Pepper® addiction? - Matt2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1> Does that mean the Toyota dealership should take my Tacoma because they think I am doing something illegal with it?
Maybe if the Toyota dealership knew you were going to smuggling illegal goods with your Tacoma and installed special compartments specifically for that purpose. That seems kind of outlandish, though. *g* - everfresh59, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just move your domain to another registrar...you might go down for a few days but not forever....GoDaddy is Google of domain registration, you can't expect them to take sides....they want to keep their company on a standard level and not get put on a blacklist
- ashevilletech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There are many legitimate uses for a Toyota Tacoma. They can also be used for illegal activity, such as running from the police. Does that mean the Toyota dealership should take my Tacoma because they think I am doing something illegal with it?
- redrighthand, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can understand their actions based on Microsofts scare tactics but maybe they should have given those sites at least a 24 hour notice to switch on their own.
