- takeda, on 10/12/2007, -1/+37This is how he got it.
From javascript:
var CP = [
[ 1167638400000, 2800 ],
[ 1175414400000, 2835 ]
];
those are miliseconds since 1970/01/01 so those are unix timestamps (divide by 1000):
1167638400
1175414400
% clock format 1167638400
Mon Jan 01 00:00:00 PST 2007
% clock format 1175414400
Sun Apr 01 00:00:00 PST 2007
I don't think 2800 and 2835 need any explanation. - curtissthompson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Read this post, where Garett Rogers explains how he knows Gmail's counter will stop on April 1st 2007:
http://tech.cybernetnews.com/2007/01/05/when-will-gmail-storage-counter-stop-again-i-know/
And if you missed the news about Gmail's counter stopping on New Years, then read about that here:
http://blogs.zdnet.com/Google/?p=435 - DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Oh noooooooo!!!! Gmail's storage counter will stop again on April 1st!!!! What will we do!!!
Everyone, make sure you have for over a month of non-perishable food and bottled water! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18WHY would this make it to the front page? Seriously...you don't have to digg EVERYTHING with the word Google in it.
This basically says "Dear Diary (since that is what blogs are...things written by 12 year old girls) Googles will stop increasing storage on April 1 . I wonder why they will do that ? I have no real idea, but I wil make random guesses." - estacado, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16It's a ***** counter for God's sake! Why make such a big hoopla over a stupid counter stopping? And to those who actually stop to look at the counter each time before they log in to GMail, go get a life!
- rocketrye12, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13it seems like a "stop counting" command would come from the server, not the user's clock. nice find, anyhow.
- samboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12It's the first day of the new quarter, so a lot of companies announce new products and services on that day to make shareholders happy.
Back when I worked for a then-large internet service provider, I remember the company president sent out an announcement saying that we would implement some long-wanted features our users wanted, including personal web pages, back when URLs were in the form http://www.isp.net/~username and ISPs offering web pages were still pretty rare. He sent it on the first day of the quarter--April 1st. Naturally, we got a lot of phone calls and email saying "Yeah, right. Cute joke."
We had to wait until April 2nd before anyone actually believed us.
- Sam - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8A bad April Fool's joke I hope.
- Earlofnecromium, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I like google being in beta, it makes me feel better. I don't like how it's open now. I hope it keeps getting better and never completely finishes.
- joshtj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I remember thinking gmails announcement was an april fools joke by google...1gb storage! no way!
- Ibox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Because it's written by some dude that looks like an old fat version of Luke Skywalker> DUH!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I wonder if space will not start decreasing on April 1st :)
2879 GB...2878 GB...2877 GB...2876 GB...2875 GB...
Ah ah! That would be a good April's fools! - briankeith, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7This was the worst "Story" I have ever read on digg.
- vtsquire, on 10/12/2007, -9/+15April 1st you say? suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuure....
- t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6>One more thing: Unix has lots of sad faces.
Huh? - danmanx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Do you guys actually see his picture? He's downright scary.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4April Fools..lucky for me thats my birthday..I don't even get more storage as a gift ='(
- safiire, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I think it's done by Javascript running on the client side so it would use your local system time.
- SaladFork, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Sorry, but I fail to see how this tiny little blog post comes anywhere near "explaining" why it stops on April 1st. As a matter of fact, he doesn't even mention how he found out about this date (sure, you can set the clock forward, but he didn't say that in the post). However, a quick search through the javascript of the page nets the following result:
var CP = [
[ 1167638400000, 2800 ],
[ 1175414400000, 2835 ]
]; - eric0213, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This means nothing. This is how Google's always done their incrementing counter. Have a value at one timestamp, another value at another timestamp, and increment linearly in between. When the second timestamp approaches, they advance it to two new values.
I'm not saying they don't have something planned for April 1st, just that the incrementing isn't going to necessarily stop.
Sorry Mr. Rogers. - isuldor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"If you set the clock on your computer to April 1st or anything later, the login page for Gmail will display your quota as 2835MB (I think that’s the number…something nice and round anyway)… but any date before that will give you the incrementing counter."
- compu73rg33k, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"I don't think 2800 and 2835 need any explanation."
Erm...I do.. : What do they mean lmfao? - takeda, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4People are talking about it, since the counter won't stop because of an error.
It was programmed to stop on April 1st, and there should be a reason behind it.
Anyway, it seemed to be an big issue when it stopped on the beginning of 2007, I think it would be pretty funny if nothing would actually happen on April 1st...
Anyway, I'm pretty sure google wanted us to know that, and I really wonder what they're planning, something tells me that they'll make joke out of it, eg. what if the counter would start decreasing? let say 1kb/s...
That would be pretty hilarious =) - Jaryd2006, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Damn that sucks. You have surely endured some cruel aprils fools jokes I bet.
- UCFMark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3People sometimes complain that Gmail and other products remain in beta stages for too long, but in my opinion, it is far better to keep a product in beta for longer than strictly necessary than to release it as final before it is finished and the bugs worked out.
- plbland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3My prediction:
Google always does something on April 1st, be it launch a new service, have an april fools joke etc etc. I think on April 1st they will increase the storage at speed up another GB to 3835MB. - DnasTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2UNIX code? What the...?
I hope you do realize that that is Javascript.
UNIX is an operating system. Not particularly related.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UNIX
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Javascript
Why do I get a suspicion that you're a DOS-user without much technical background?
For your information, brackets are often used to specify arrays. = is usually used for assignment, and ; is often used to end a statement. - gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They will take it out of beta and the page will change with a new counter. That's my prediction.
- adragons, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3GDrive with unlimited storage? Yeah, gdrive is a cool idea, but they can't offer more than they do already for gmail... Thats just insanity.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Keeping something in beta for years is NEVER a bad thing. Take Blizzard Entertainment, for example. They'll spend many, MANY years working on a game, before releasing anything. WoW was in beta for about a year, I believe (correct me if I'm wrong), before they finally released the game. Same with StarCraft, and the Diablo games.
Beta = "We're still working on it, fixing things, and making it even better."
Not beta = "We're done, but if something's really messed up, we'll throw in a patch or two." - Alshafai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I hope that they enable IMAP service
- Bamborzled, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That counter was responsible for jumping my Gmail account storage from 1GB to 2GB.
- drakia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It is obvious why this is happening, it was posted multiple times in the comments of the past who knows how many posts about GMail's counter stopping/starting. Burried as just lame
- grimman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2And to clarify, the first number on each line is a UNIX time stamp with the extra zeroes appended.
1175414400000 is 1175414400 in UNIX time, ie. April 1st. THIS is why it will stop. (The technical reason anyway.)
To play with it yourself (and reach the same conclusions I did), go to http://www.onlineconversion.com/unix_time.htm - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Gmail won't come out of beta. Google has said a product (specifically I remember it to be about Gmail) stays in beta until they've all the features they want to it. Of course there will be revisions (like Google Earth and Google Desktop).
Anyway, I see a few things that Google could add to Gmail. One addition would be a column that told the size of the e-mail. May be a bit superfluous but it works. - kabewm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Me too. Although I doubt they could. The concept of labels doesn't seem very compatible with the concept of folders.
- Beaver6813, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2No its google-insanity!
- Blandyman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Read the Unix code he posted, and there's = [ on the first line, and ]; again at the end.
Sorry, two stupid jokes in a single post was just asking for myself to get beat down. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Who the heck cares ? Gmail is for people who don't value the sanctity of their data. Once your data is in the belly of the google beast, it's there forever.
- wphj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think it'll bump up to something like 5GB or maybe a little less. That way everyone will think it's a good thing that they gave us more, even if it stopped counting.
- Kevin108, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why is this news?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Happy birthday! Just kidding, here's a can of spring-loaded snakes."
I'm sure the trick candles also get old. - chewy5000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you are absolutely right. why is there such a fuss? he's just throwing random guesses. And as if the storage will continue going up forever
- m0laria, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This blog is written by Mark Hammil?
- WallnutBoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Go gmail!
I dunno.. I don't thikn Google'll take Gmail out of beta... It'd just seem wrong without the beta in their logo.. {shrugs}
More space, though? Possibly! That'd be pretty awesome... - oskite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Not now, it won't.
- JohSteLon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0April 1st is the 'birthday' of gmail, after all. Maybe they have something in mind...
- t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Who dugg him down? He was absolutely right!
- Beaver6813, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yup :( Unfortunately when a product is released companies tend to put less time and money into them after a few months... i want it to stay beta forever!
- mousky, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2***** geeks.
