- SuperJared, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8It doesn't seem like a good idea to me.
All your company's emails (and accompanying data) are belong to Google. - hashkaran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I think it's nice and cool and everything, but make sure you read their privacy policy before singing up.
http://www.google.com/privacy.html. - Gala, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6it came true!
I posted an article about some code that looked like this was coming
http://www.digg.com/technology/GMail_Code_Hints_at_Coming_Feature - scholty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Microsoft has this in beta as well. http://ideas.live.com/ It's called the Windows Live Custom Domains.
- SupaDawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4this isnt really google's idea. microsoft is already offering this. I have it implemented on my website already at dallasstarsforever.com
check out http://domains.live.com
MS has been doing this since last year. - Lazybones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Gmail doesn't do half of what Microsoft Exchange does.. Microsoft Exchange is not a Mail server it is much more.. The scheduling / calender component is probably the most important part next to email.
Not to say this isn't an interesting service idea. - Jarrod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'd love to use Gmail for this. I currently use roundcube (http://roundcube.net) but they haven't updated their program since October and it's not quite ready for prime time as it is now. It's great, but it's no Gmail.
- unfun72, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2funny that GMAIL itself is still in BETA...according to google.
- jeremiah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So will this be free?
I can't seem to get the form to submit (although it will not give any error messages stating what is wrong.... (Anyone else have this happen)?
I would like to move one of my domains from everyone.net. We have just under 3k users so the M$ option is out since it is capped.
Guess I'll try again in a little while. - roxah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Man, and to think Ive been doing this EXACT same thing via a workaround for our business for the last month.
Simply set up your POP accounts to automatically FWD to a valid gmail account. Then, use GMails mailfrom/mail as availabilty to verify you can send email from a different address (send yourself an email to your domain address....it shows up in gmail inbox. Reply to it and bingo).
I have been very successful in getting our small company's users up and running with Gmail / our domain accounts.
There are at least two major benefits to doing this:
1) No mail software to buy/install.... Google does it for you
2) No real threat of data loss...because all mail sits in Gmail, they do the backup for you. Plus, then you can check any of your work email from any computer...with all saved items at your fingertips.
/Should have written a Guide on this....then I could get digged - estvir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this is a copy of microsoft's live domains .. good job google, i thought copying people was bad ? oh wait, that's only you fanboys.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1***** now. I don't want my email or my members' email going through some corporation's machines. Especially when they have the ability to use it for whatever purposes they care to, including handing over to the government.
- errorik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The problem with the form is having too large of additional comments in the 2nd part of the form.
After many attempts of submitting and changing various values, and even starting over, when I decided to cut what I was saying in this field down, it finally accepted it.
Too bad too cause the info I had wanted to provide I felt would make me a better candidate for their beta program. - crash331, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i signed my crappy blog up for service. doubt ill get my 2 requested email addys.
- tj9991, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I signed up a few days ago and the accept email was in my inbox this morning. I played around with it and got all the DNS records configured, and it works great. I signed up for 100 accounts, though they have a really easy to use form for requesting more, you don't even need to give a reason.
Hopefully this will talk some of my website users to stick around a little longer. - saysaknow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0And to think, Yahoo- their main competitor, wanted to charge for e-mail.
- monolith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cool, cept for many of my users... 2 gig wouldn't hold em for a week. They'd blow through that and look for more without even tryin. I'd like to get the codes and setup me own gmail. ya?
- kevincw01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah, i'd prefer if they opensourced it and released the code for gmail as a not-for-profit only.
- ender78, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is NOT a corporate solution, Outlook works too well [minus the damn search features]. Someone cited a college as using this, that is a great idea, webmail when I went to school sucked.
- simd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Whats the difference with this and using Email Forwarders (like in cPanel) to redirect yourname@yourdomain.com to your gmail account?"
You don't need an email server yourself - email goes straight to Google. - sorti, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If they were to add Enterprise Blackberry support like some of the hosted Exchange or Lotus Notes services' do that would be cool.
- jcao, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's so cool, I like it:)
- tijer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A lot of you complain about the un-usability of this - saying that large cooporations will never do this.
I think you missed the point. Try thinking of it as a hint that a University was first to get it. - lateralis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I too cannot get past the second page. tried business, personal and other, various amounts of addresses needed, in USA and not. no joy. could it be browser related? I'm in Safari.
- wyattearp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ficken sweet! .... but i'll still host my own.
- echimu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i am getting error
Please correct the errors below.
But it does not display any error :( - cprior, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It is hard to find a company with an excellent reputation in email handling offering pure webmail solutions. Most of them are somewhat extended webpage hosting deals. Over here in Germany, the big players in the webmail segment like GMX wouldn't even answer to MX-record related questions in a clear way.
Now Gmail needs good i18n... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Don't forget your password ... getting through to google is total hell!
- DoMaGe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Google, the ultimate sheep herder. Go sheep go. Bwaaaaaaah bwaaaaaaaah.
- tardmongerster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Um, no thanks. I'll keep all my company's email nice and secure on site. Exchange rules! Besides, this wouldn't fly with the auditors.
- zimmyzammy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The kids in remond have been hosting e-mail and stuff for universities for free on hotmail and now windows live mail for eeeeeons. http://www.imagine-wl.com/education/ I think it's fuh-ree for the skules.
- 6strings, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Non-story for at least two reasons:
1. Anyone can already use Gmail (or any other free e-mail) for company e-mail if they want. This is merely a cosmetic addition.
2. No net admin with a brain will entrust any mission-critical service like e-mail to a completely different company.
Above and beyond privacy issues, reliability issues, and feature set issues, there is the obvious fact that IF YOU LOSE ACCESS TO THE NET, NOBODY AT YOUR COMPANY CAN E-MAIL INTERNALLY ANY MORE.
Five minutes of that, and the CEO has already hired your replacement. - WeeklyGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's pretty sweet!
So when Google eventually takes over the world, that means they will also control every corporation's forwarded joke emails people send around? THE POWER. - mesostinky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Google has all rights to the data it hosts on its service and makes no bones about its privacy, or lack of therefore, policy.
Nobody who has a clue would use this service when you can easily host your own or for a small fee host it with an ISP. Setting up webmail on OSS is trival and best of all you won't have to see ads or upload your private emails for Google to index. - RyeBrye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I applied, but I'm a small fry. I don't know if they will like me.
- yobkeeg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0huh? What does this actually mean? Is this absolutely necessary for Google to get into? It seems like they are trying to be everything to everyone, but ending up be no good at doing anything but search and email....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I signed up with no problems (using FF 1.5.0.1). I'm wary about using the service for anything other than personal email (for which I signed up). With the current lawsuit pending against google from the US AG, I would think businesses would be hesitant as well. Still, deserving of a digg-DUGG
- planckstudios, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here's what I think -
First, consider Google's main strength - delivering content. Aside from the 'video store' they're pretty flawless. With this move, they're hand picking other organizations who'll get a nudge to deliver their own content more effectively - selective breeding. You know how they love nurturing small ideas - is that 20% of every week they give up for independent projects?
They don't want to see your self-gratifying comments (that's what pulling your errors, too many words - errorik is right), they want to see the site they'll help. They wanna check out your content before getting in bed w/ you. That and they want a decent cross-section for sampling purposes.
Google's like that hot slut in your stats class you just can't help but spill your guts to...and now she's on the verge of talking to all your friends, oh, and your boss. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ star
You beat me to that comment - Calculon64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thanks bro
- simpletech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wonder if this will work for my multi-billion dollar corporation. And maybe I will be able to access my employees e-mail to see what "GREAT" and "BEAUTIFUL" things they are saying about me there great OWNER/CEO/CULT/ACTIVIST! (CULTS LIVE ON!!!!!)
- mpancha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I tried to apply but I keep getting sent back to step 2 to correct errors, but it doesn't say what errors I've made. :s... guess I'll try it later.
definately digg-worthy. - hadimirza, on 03/26/2008, -0/+0i don't get it...
- kerplunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is a waste for anyone who provides their users with email (free or not). You can't even customize this to look like your site, you can't run your own ads (Google does that for you too!), and like everyone else has been saying, Google owns all of your stuff.
If you want to talk about people copying people, maybe we should all talk to BigMailBox.com and see how they feel. - ericab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dugg and signed up.
- gadgetguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0And you can sign up for the beta program here: https://www.google.com/hosted/Home
I don't like that they ask how many users you want.. I run an open domain and route & spam filter accordingly. - tiamat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hawt! I'm basically doing this now with backup account @gmail, so this would cut out the middle man.
- acedeuce12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I started from the beginning, left the comments blank, and it worked. Haven't gotten a response yet, but it's only been a few minutes.
- edmicman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd rather they open the software up and let me use the front end on my own domain with IMAP. That would be awesome. I'm not going to have my users emails routed through google, though, that's for sure.
WHy the heck can't someone make a PHP/MySQL gmail clone? Roundcube had/has promise, but I don't like the direction they're taking in making it a web-based thunderbird-like clone. I want gmail, but on my server with IMAP. No more. Unless you added calendaring with it :-) - cprior, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@hashkaran: Please make it a habit to add a space after all hyperlinks that you might post/paste. Thank you!
