- thewebguy, on 10/12/2007, -11/+107i agree, i like the slight difficulty in registering. it probably keeps a ton of spammers off gmail
- harmlessinc, on 10/12/2007, -11/+72No one I know has been able to give Gmail account invites away for months... I didn't realize anyone who wanted one didn't have one at this point.
- wassim2k, on 10/12/2007, -3/+53Does that mean that it won't be a Web 2.0 application anymore, since it won't have the word "beta" next to its name? This is a Google story, so here are the mandatory exclamation points: !!!!!!!!!!!!!
- pantuky, on 10/12/2007, -10/+52Sheeeyaaaahh! It's about time dude! I've been using this for two years. It pretty well destroys everything in the world of mail.
- yensed, on 10/12/2007, -11/+45About damn time. Youtube is more beta then Gmail.
- unsliced, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32I've been able to give invites still - but the count goes down. A while ago, you'd give the away, and get into the mid-nineties ... but then the number would rise up again to 100. Not for a few months now, though.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+31People have not needed to get invites for Gmail for a looong time now. Anyone with a cell phone can register, as Google sends a text message to your phone giving you the password as a way to deter spammers and people who needlessly accumulate many accounts under the same name.
- ilovenicotine, on 10/12/2007, -14/+40You can invite yourself if you have a cellphone. I just did:

bad bing bada boom - OnymousHero, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25And into Gamma?
- stomicron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21"When will merricans know the difference between then and than?"
It's not "merricans," it's internet users who learn their grammar and spelling from other internet users. Until that changes, we will always see words like definately, congradulations, should of, etc. - nikkesen, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25I had no shortage of invites... then again, everyone I know either is too non-copmputer savvy to use gmail or has gmail with idling gmail invites.
- Switch22, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22I was looking for 99 invites =(
- loof, on 10/12/2007, -14/+32I don't know about "destroys everything in the world of mail." but it is nice.
- chesterjosiah, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Another source has the story too: http://www.apcstart.com/site/dwarne/2006/08/946/gmail-finally-open-for-business)
From that source:
“Gmail remains otherwise unchanged—offering over 2.7GB of free space, built-in Google search technology, great spam protection and a fast and innovative user experience.”
When Google says “otherwise unchanged”, it really means it. GMail will still remain in beta, more than two years after it launched and millions of users later.
----
So according to that source, this title is inaccurate. Gmail will still be beta, but it will be open to registrations without the need for an invitation. - DannoHung, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Erm, you've been able to sign up for Gmail by using a Cell phone for a while now, haven't you?
That's probablly the best way to keep spammers out. - julienbh, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17No but heaven is burning...
- bitcloud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Does this mean now we can look forward to spammers getting in on the gmail account action?
- sapo916, on 10/12/2007, -13/+23Gmail requires Computer Savvyness? I find it nicer to use than Yahoo or Hotmail.
- Gryffydd, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15@CCRider
I don't know what your talking about. We have great grammer. Its practically perfect! In fact, its better then yours. OK, I'm going to have to lay down. I shouldn't of said anything... - dirka, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Anyone else been getting butt loads more spam on Gmail within the last month??
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11eric: the integration of google talk into the email is pretty revolutionary. You can reply by chat and it keeps that in your thread. It has taken the two most pervasive online communication tools and merged them into one rather seamlessly.
I realize they haven't done anything to revolutionize email this week - but give them credit where it is due. - cadich, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12thanx, please invite me : cadich@gmail.com
- armbar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9It could be hard to tell where you are in Kansas, with the lack of landmarks. For all he knows, he could be in Nebraska.
- quanticle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9@sjmueller
I've tried the Yahoo Mail beta interface, but the problem is that its pretty slow, especially compared to GMail. It also used to crash if you had a large number of messages in your in-box. The latter was a problem for me because I use Yahoo as my "spam account".
That said, all of this was a couple of months ago. Things could have changed for the better by now. - KnightMareInc, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12did hell just freeze over?
- Nougat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Labels *are* folders, in a manner of speaking. As long as you only assign one label to an email, they act exactly like folders. On the other hand, if you assign more than one label, then you get a more advanced way of organizing your emails.
- technique, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Anybody else noticed that you can't do a partial search in gmail? Like to find "pancake" you can't find it via "pan" or "cake"? That sucks.
- traherom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Thunderbird does it pretty well.
- c50cnameless, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11i agree with pantuky, after using the conversation view for just a few weeks i've never touched anything since. I have tried to find a program for my pc with conversation view, but no such luck :( Anyone know of any?
- atheken, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I have tons of invites too, if you have a friend with gmail, you could have it too. I hoped Gmail would stay this way - here's the reason why..
To get a Gmail account, you need to be "prove" - in some minimal way - to exist. In the case of invites, it means you have a non-imaginary friend with Gmail, or you have a mobile phone with which to link the account - also a sign that you do, in fact, exist. I think it was a good way to throttle users from creating an arbitrary number of accounts (think HOTMAIL). In doing so, gmail accounts might be a bit more trusted. But since this method is largely circumvented in a straight-forward manner, I guess they'll just let the floodgates open. Maybe next time. - eric0213, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Like [View -> Arrange By -> Conversation]?
- Snuffkin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10No, you've been able to sign up by cellphone if you live in one of a severely limited number of countries.
- SublimeRuin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Your pretty sure you live in wichita kansas - you mean you dont actually KNOW you live there.....
- Burmask, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Good luck getting a normal username.
- jmbledsoe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I seriously doubt that GMail is going to add folders. As far as I can tell, that's against their very foundations. Rather than organizing into folders, just search and find what you're looking for.
- martin77, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7" About damn time. Youtube is more beta then Gmail."
even in a discussion about email somebody still
manages to bring sodding YooTooobe into the equation. - dSlifer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I suppose they realized how little of a threat Witchita, Kansas is and released it only to you guys. I didn't even know there were computers in those parts
- codeman38, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Not only that, but not even all mobile phone plans in that severely limited number of countries are compatible. For instance, here in the US, it works with T-Mobile's contract plans but *not* their prepaid service.
- Nougat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5BigGeek: If you're using Firefox, the Customize Google extension has a "Hide Spam Counter" option in the GMail tab. It keeps me from picking at that scab.
But you're right, they should at least allow you to not have to see how many spams you have. Another thing is they should allow you to automatically mark something read with a filter rule, and automatically mark something read when you apply a label. - stomicron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Just because they're opening their doors, doesn't mean they're coming out of beta. Remember, there are plenty of public google betas.
- MrSpontaneous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Labels are more powerful than folders, but you can make them behave like folders if you'd like. All you have to do is set up a filter rule to apply a label, then have the filter bypass the inbox.
IMAP access would only work if folders were supported.
gMAP (beta) anyone? - Pattyo13, on 05/14/2009, -3/+8have you been paying for email all of this time?
- david752, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I don't see how folders would work any better than labels ?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Whee now michaelbblack@gmail.com has a new email address ^
- numptydumpty, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6there are tutorials out there on how to make Outlook act more like your Gmail window.... have a look on google, or digg
- leet455, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9....or 'of' and 'have':
"I should of known..."
Horrible. - emellaich, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"Good Luck Getting a Normal User Name"
OK, I know its not exactly what you asked, but ...
Gmail will host your own domain name for free. If you don't have a domain you can get one for under $10 per year. Then sign up for hosted google mail. At that point you can pick whatever user name @ yourdomain.com that you want. In fact, since hosted gmail will send all unrecognized emails at yourdomain to a default box, you can have every user name. - lonewalker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5>@cadich
>you already have a gmail account :D anyways i sent you one invite
aparrently not your email is invalid the mail bounced back - Linh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I wanted folders at first too.. but learned to use labels/tags. I've found that this is much better than I thought it was. You have to move away from the hierarchical thinking of folders of course.. which can be a challenge.
The only downside I've seen.. if I'm not consistant in labeling/tagging (this is more of an issue w/ pictures than email, aka flickr).
But I would like to see IMAP support (not sure how you'd get labeling into this, maybe through extension support in thunderbird).
I'd also like to see true multiple identities so some programs don't show my gmail address (unlikely to happen due to spammers I bet).
I want to see an integrated notepad (maybe make notebook integrated) too.
Most importantely though, I would like to see stronger filtering options (like digging into the headers) - monototo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4yeah. that does suck.
