- pennyfan87, on 12/05/2007, -4/+137Still waiting for gTalk integration.
- zeptobyte, on 12/05/2007, -3/+119"P.S. If you own a large IM network and would like to work with us, have your people contact our people."
- diargasm, on 12/05/2007, -1/+112Gmail just keeps getting better and better. I can't believe how many people still use yahoo or hotmail. I remember the days before gmail when email was a hassle.
- HHP2K, on 12/05/2007, -0/+93You stay classy Google.
- BlaenkDenum, on 12/05/2007, -2/+49"have your people contact our people" - I love Google ;)
- madeinbrazil, on 12/05/2007, -2/+46Great! Now I have even more distractions on my GMail. A great added feature but I just wish GTalk stand alone would increase its functionalities.
- hartley, on 12/05/2007, -6/+44People who used computers in the 90's use AIM.
- IggyPop, on 12/05/2007, -31/+65This would be cooler if I used AIM...or even knew anyone that did.
- zzz@tkz, on 12/05/2007, -4/+34Yeah, or stick with Pidgin.
- nullpointer, on 12/05/2007, -0/+27ICQ accounts also work.
- digitalsol, on 12/05/2007, -2/+28I've been waiting for this for a long time! Finally.... ! They made this announcement a year + ago.
- defubar, on 12/05/2007, -0/+21Damn straight. Have had my screen name since '98.
- thebellmaster1x, on 12/05/2007, -4/+25"Who is digging this down?"
Smart people. Duplicates get submitted every day, and Digg happens to pick one by chance. The whole purpose of submitting stories is to have people read them, not to have people tell you that you have a giant e-penis. - onlygeek, on 12/05/2007, -3/+23ya Gtalk desktop needs a few addons ...
- Farik, on 12/05/2007, -0/+20All the time from work.
- dragazis, on 12/05/2007, -1/+18lame. I want GTalkAIM messaging not AIM within GMail. >_>
- kaytrio, on 12/05/2007, -2/+18Where the hell is the interoperability we were promised?
http://www.google.com/intl/en/press/pressrel/twaol ... - zelah, on 12/05/2007, -10/+25adium yo
- geminitojanus, on 12/05/2007, -1/+15Under the hood, this is gTalk integration; the web chat is just a server-side Jabber client (ala Meebo and the like). Not sure what changes will need to be made to clients (if any), but it's here.
- SteveDeGroof, on 12/05/2007, -0/+14It seems like the desktop client has been abandoned. I don't remember the last time they updated it.
- elpepe, on 12/05/2007, -1/+15There is a HUGE bug in this. When the screen name for aim you want to use was also an AOL account (years and years and years ago), you need to enter the old AOL password instead of the aim password. For example, the screen name I used was originally an AOL account, but has a different AIM password and hasn't been used to log into AOL in probably 10 years. I can't believe I remembered my old AOL password, but that's what it needs. Nowhere does it say this, in fact it explicitly says enter your AIM password. The funny thing is, the AOL password doesn't even work with real actual AIM (via Aim client, Adium, or Pidgin)
- RafiParrr, on 12/05/2007, -0/+12It works with Safari 3, even though they don't say it's supported. Huzzah!
- Scruffydan, on 12/05/2007, -1/+13errr you mean ICQ right?
- Feanor, on 12/05/2007, -1/+12no sir?
- ozid, on 12/05/2007, -6/+17I started on ICQ, went to AIM. Now I just use pidgin and could care less what other people are using. ;)
- natenovs, on 12/05/2007, -1/+12welcome to google.
- jonatne, on 12/05/2007, -1/+11I think it's great that gmail has aim.
Now I can be notified of new IMs and new emails from the same application.
I can also use gmail to track and search conversations with people alongside emails.
Since no one I work with uses gtalk, and everyone uses AIM, it's a lot more convenient for me. - SteveMax, on 12/05/2007, -1/+11s/could/couldn't
If you "could" care less, then it is possible to care less than you do.
If you "couldn't" care less, then you care so little that it is impossible to care less than you do. - raptordrew, on 12/05/2007, -0/+10*Two* years ago... http://www.google.com/intl/en/press/pressrel/twaol ...
- roosterjm2k2, on 12/05/2007, -0/+9Yeah, use trillian...because a chat client really should use 160+ MB of ram when its running...
- DaleoftheUK, on 12/05/2007, -0/+9"Still waiting for gTalk integration."
Still waiting for googletalk app for mac/linux. :( - gbarberi, on 12/05/2007, -0/+9When are all these new features going to be available on the client?
- cyrix, on 12/05/2007, -0/+7I do occasionally when I'm at work. A lot of people I know use gmail now. So it's quite beneficial to be able to tak to them instantly instead of sending an email and waiting for a response.
- diggkid, on 12/05/2007, -0/+7good news, but also waiting for MSN integration
- iofthestorm, on 12/05/2007, -2/+8If you like Meebo pidgin is what it is based off of so I recommend that. Also meebo owns, and in many ways looks and feels better than Pidgin. But I don't like my IM being inside my web browser personally.
- axiomata, on 12/05/2007, -0/+6I couldn't log in either with my AIM password (though like you, I originally registered the username with AIM). I was able to get it to work by logging into Pidgin as usual and using its change password option to something new. Tried the new password in gmail and it worked. Weird.
- spike411, on 12/05/2007, -1/+6I think that people at XMPP Standards Foundation must be pretty sad that Google didn't push AOL to open up and provide standard XMPP-based (Jabber) IM interoperability. This sucks.
- hartley, on 12/05/2007, -2/+7American's used AIM, the rest of the world used ICQ.
- InitialDMP5, on 12/05/2007, -0/+5It doesn't matter what kind of connection. If your computers are on the same network the files will transfer super fast. I send 300-400mb files to my room mate all the time and it takes under 20 seconds through AIM.
- rockmanac, on 12/05/2007, -0/+5and people with GFYD don't get it as it's part of Gmail 2.0.
- Admanta, on 12/05/2007, -0/+5It's become my preferred method of IMing my parents since they both use gmail.
- arcticblue, on 12/05/2007, -0/+5So you mean to tell me you have at least a 247Mbps connection? And I thought my 100Mbps fiber here in Japan was fast...
- inactive, on 12/05/2007, -2/+6Many of my "social peers" use aim.. hopefully they'll catch up with times ;_ ;
- Ellsass, on 11/05/2008, -0/+4I don't know anyone who doesn't use AIM...
- SteveMax, on 12/05/2007, -0/+4But with the AOL icon.
- joepaterno, on 12/05/2007, -3/+7Maybe you should give them a reacharound
- allyant, on 12/05/2007, -1/+5No, it's STILL in closed testing stages.
- Gneekman, on 12/05/2007, -0/+4It was fairly easy to do in previous iChat versions - all you had to do was set it up as a Jabber account, and make sure the server was talk.google.com.
- utoks, on 12/05/2007, -2/+6I'm a huge Gmail fan as well. But I recently saw Yahoo's UI on a friends account. It actually looked pretty good. I didn't check any of its features but at least it looked nice. Very well laid out.
- MrSunshine, on 12/05/2007, -0/+4ICQ and IRC were the things in the 90s.
