- MaddDog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27I have had Gmail for a couple of years now, and I have never received a single spam in my inbox. There are generally 100-200 sitting in the Spam folder though, indicating its not for lack of effort. Well done to them, last time I checked my hotmail account, there were hundreds of spam in my inbox. Then again, all I have to do is wait 30 days and Microsoft kindly deletes all of my emails for me.
- cody50, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24Well, there's egg and bacon; egg sausage and bacon; egg and spam; egg bacon and spam; egg bacon sausage and spam; spam bacon sausage and spam; spam egg spam spam bacon and spam; spam sausage spam spam bacon spam tomato and spam...
- mojoel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Meanwhile, the spammers get better at disguising spam.
- armbar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Psh...I get 10-15 by 7am. Thankfully, like the article mentions, Gmail is very good at catching it, and I see maybe 2 all day (out of approx 200)
- MrMysterious, on 10/12/2007, -7/+19Maybe overall, but in the last week I've been getting 10-15 spams a day through compared with about 1 for the previous year.

You can put a bow tie and pretty ribbons on it, but its still microsoft. - ocellnuri, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I've had a ton of mortgage spam coming through in the last few weeks. (What do they think they're accomplishing? Who would try to get a mortgage through a vauge and sketchy e-mail?)
- cracell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Ya but gmail is ahead me thinks. I've got thirteen in my spam filter from just this morning. And it hasn't missed one for a while. (I get a ton ...cause I post my email address whereever cause I have faith in my gmail cracell@gmail.com)
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Microsoft can learn a thing or two from this. Hotmail continues to get bombarded by spam, and a surprising amount of false positives. In fact, it seems more friendly to the legitimate spam!
- tHePeOPle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10@fatdog789
Complaining about free ***** is awesome. - mythealias, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7you still use hotmail ???
- smackfu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Your Mortgage Account #4667760108 has been Pre-approved
That sure is tough to filter. - themarq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Can those of you who are complaining about the amount of spam you get to your gmail account clarify if it goes to your 'inbox' or 'spambox?'
I get 10-20 spam emails a day but they go straight to my spambox, so I just go look every few days to see if there are any false positives in there, so far zero false positives. About once a month a spam message makes it's way to my inbox, I mark it as spam and move on.
Just wondering. - scottc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The point of the article is about false positives, which for most people is a more serious issue than some spam getting through the filters. In my testing a few months ago gmail was by far the best at preventing false positives. Apparently it is now even better. I have no idea whether the others have improved or not.
- TonyCubed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I haven't had much of a problem with people spamming. I just hope that doesn't change for me!
- jlebrech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Clialis, Vinagra, bigger peanuts, get bigger loads, and bres Implantzzz.
No more :D - b.m.a.n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3its good that they have gotten better, but I still get a ***** of emails every single day that should be in the spam area....they need work still
- raptordrew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Of course Gmail is getting better at filtering, it's a Google product!
- MrKite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Spam is in result of how you use your email account. If you're getting 20 viagra emails per day, then maybe you should use a different account when subscribing to porn sites. I've got 4 email addresses, one for family and friends, one for when I sign up for stuff on the Internet, one for making purchases, and one that I put on my resume.
The ones I use for purchasing and signing up for stuff can get anywhere between 100 and 300 spam messages per day. But since I only use it for receipts and and passwords, I'm not using them very often.
Both my personal and resume accounts get maybe 1 spam message per month. - chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Gmail has literally let through emails where the subject is ***SPAM***
I probably have gotten 8-10 a day the last few weeks. - ediPG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3every day there is 10-15 spamm mails.. and every day I reported all of them, but I am still receiving 10-15 mails every day.
- HHP2K, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3According to studies, millions of messages are sent an hour, and only 1-2% of them actually result in someone falling for them. But, even with all the processing and power and bandwidth costs, that 1-2% is apparently enough to keep the business on its feet. Ridiculous.
- dblood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well, I haven't tested recently, but last time I did was a little over a year ago. They had about 95% effective filter then. This was based on over a million emails a day for a month. I have seen it get better with much lower number based the greylisting I have added before forwarding my messages to gmail. I now recieve 10 spam per day, and they are all caught by their filter.
- liquilife, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I get almost 1,000 spam messages per day. Gmail effectively puts them in the spam folder. I only get the occasional PayPal phishing emails, that's it. I have about 15 emails that forward to my gmail I've had from the past or I use in a business manner which is where all the spam originates from. Gmail is as close to 100% effective as can be. Spam used to be an issue but seems a thing of the past to me.
- mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I calculated that I get 62 Spam a day on average, and usually one leaks through to my inbox every two days. I have never ever had any mail incorrectly marked as spam. I don't know about you, but I think this is an excellent track record.
- zbeast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've always loved gmail spam filter if it gotten better I don't know how.
Spam always goes where it need to go in the spam folder.
I may get 1 spam message in my regular mail once maybe ever 2 months.
My hot mail account no matter how much I delete or mark as spam.
Still gets 5 to 10 a week in my main mail box.
There getting better but they still have a long way to go. - bpapa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2In my personal experience, I had a pretty rough summer of spam in GMail. I was getting a good 5-10 spam messages per day (still much better than any other free service I've used).
However, in the past week things have been much improved. Not sure if the spammers took a vacation or if Gmail got better, but I'd bet on the latter. - MaddDog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The spam sent to my gmail account goes straight to my spambox, so far I have yet to receive a single spam in my inbox. However, I also don't post my gmail address on every public forum and blog on the web.
- LogicBomB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I just wish I could perma-block the spam from ever showing up. When I see spam I'm ALWAYS inclined to at least read the subjects to make sure it's crap. I'd like to blacklist everything from even getting that far. Rather than "delete forever" maybe a "ban forever" button.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4My Gmail account(s) are generally spam free. I can't think of a single spam message that has gotten through the filter. On the other hand, I occasionally have to check in on the spam folder to make sure that a genuine message didn't get snatched into there, which has happened a couple of times now.
- CoolGoose, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Well at least google doesn't send good mail at bulk and spam in my inbox :D. Anyway i'm not really getting spam. The mark as spam button works well :D.

- hagrin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Dr Digg -
I can concur with this statement. I have Reported as Spam the same email (read - same text ini the body of the email, different senders) at least 200 times (no joke - the email has to do with Rose Kwok) and it eventually took a manual filter on my part to take care of the problem since Gmail wasn't.
That being said, I use Gmail exclusively and between their Spam protection and the ability to create custom filters, I have eliminated all spam coming into my Inbox. Couple that with a Greasemonkey script to color code messages with certain labels (i.e. I created an "Attachment" label that gets auto applied through a filter whenevr I get an attachment) to make sure I am fully aware I am clicking on a message that contains an attachment.
So ...
1) Report as Spam option - use it.
2) Create custom filters to catch the reoccurring spam that Gmail is failing at
3) Use FireFox + Greasemonkey to further color code the messages coming in to help identify spam. - scottc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes, I had trouble with connections to gmail all weekend.
- jonashwing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i setup a rule to have my work email automatically forward a copy of all email to my gmail and then setup a rule in gmail to automatically label it and archive it.
a couple months ago a lot of spam started getting through on my work account and those emails were being forwarded to my gmail account. i was impressed with gmail because It was smart enough to know which emails i forwarded were spam and which ones were legit. - xenubaba, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Then just create a filter that deletes all emails with the subject ***SPAM***, you moron.
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have a legacy account that I check from time to time in case some old contact sends me mail there, but I use both gmail and also gmail for domains for my product website. So no, not really.
- hasbeen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I basically have the same setup as MrKite.
I have about 3 emails that get forwarded to one primary account. Each account has its own distinct function. If the account I use to sign up on various websites simply gets way too much spam, I can disable forwarding. However, gmail has been fairly good with spam in the past. Though, saying that you've never received any spam is a stretch, unless you don't use your gmail account. I also wouldn't really say it improved much. At least I haven't noticed any significant difference over the years. - NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I go through odd bouts, like G-Mail suddenly stops recognizing spam every couple of months. Messages that are alarmingly similar to ones I've marked as spam occasionally pop into my inbox at the pace of about 3 or 4 a day for around 2 weeks, then G-Mail starts catching them again and all is well until the cycle starts again. Anyone else run into this phenomenon?
- serra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I haven't hardly been able to access Gmail or Google the last two days. Anyone else been having this problem?
- scottc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Many ISPs do track by spam by IP, to some degree. The biggest problem with that is that a lot of spam comes from servers that host many domains on the same IP address. So if you block an IP you block legitimate mail too. AOL is notorious for this because their software is really bad at determining what is spam and they can take up to 72 hours to remove an IP from their blacklist after it is mistakenly added. Others manage the problem better, or at least provide hosts with a quick way to address mistakes, but that takes resources that AOL is not willing to commit to the problem.
I think Google does a better job simply because of the sheer volume of mail they handle. Someone will get a copy of most of the spam sent to their servers, but the odds of that someone being you (before it gets reported) are very low. - merimeet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Are you serious here? I've been getting more and more spam each day.
- DrDigg, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5My experience is over the last 2-3 weeks there has been more spam getting through.
- gregorrothfuss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i am getting so much obvious spam in my yahoo account and none in gmail that i have to wonder if there are commercial reasons for yahoo to be easy on spam. considering that their ad platform is slipping farther and farther behind, and a lot of their income comes from shady mortgage companies..
http://greg.abstrakt.ch/archives/2006/09/spam_filtering_as_a_proxy_for_search_market_share.html - riplikethat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Have been getting 1-2 spam mails every week or two these days, but it's better than yahoo's count of 10-15 every 3 days.
- Coreguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1average 30 a day
I wish Gmail could track some spammers by IP, preventing spams even from the spam box.
I have received spams from a source for over 1 year.... - DesScorp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Maybe it's just me, but my Gmail filtering has gotten progressively worse.
- mcherm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I get about 5-10 spam per day that are NOT caught by Google's spam filter. Nearly all are either in an east-Asian character set (probably Chinese), or are stock promotion spams. Frankly, I find gmail's spam handling quite inadequate.
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Spammers might as well give up the ghost with so many companies now tracking them down and going after them.
- RandomEngy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well the good news is Gmail seems to be finally filtering those PayPal phishing mails. It does not seem difficult to me to block mails that have a link text of "www.paypal.com/login" and a link location of "-random ip-/login" so I'm glad they got around to it.
But now I'm getting a bunch of mail with a lot of foriegn characters in the subject line. About 2 of those a day get through the filter. Why the writers of this spam think a subject line of "เหนื่อยมั้ย!!กับการลดน้ำหนักที่ไม่สำเร็จ EGFCXSHEJN" would induce recipients to open it, I have no idea. -
