- computerbynar, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21it works for me
- Phantom76, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18It is still in Beta. Right?
- Kman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Skynet has become aware.
- Linkage155, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13OMG, the world is ending, google pages are returning with 404!
Guys.. come on, this "We're sorry, but Gmail is temporarily unavailable. We're currently
working to fix the problem -- please try logging in to your account in
a few minutes." has been around for ages now.. I remmember a while ago, it was down for about 24 hours..
Not big, servers do this all the time, just sit back and wait for it to come back up, data was not lost. - boredzo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I sense a frappr map coming on!
- xelloss, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Works fine here, Cali.
- kuchdawg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9IT IS NOT A LOCATION PROBLEM, JUST SOME ACCOUNTS ARN'T WORKING (ONE OF MINE WERE NOT WORKING) now it is, it started working a few min ago.
- VaderHader, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9all good on mars.
- kuchdawg, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11It's not the location that matters, its just some accounts, I can log into some of my other accounts A-OK, but others I cannot.
- datagod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Everything is great over here on Skull Island...except for all the whacked out native voodo chicks running around...
- Unicron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I think we've established that it works for some & not for others, can we discuss the actual problem now?
- D4r7h3v1l, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"digg is overrun by Microsofties, so anything about any Microsoft competitor automatically gets modded down."
You're funny.
This is just like how conservatives hate the media because it's "liberal" and the liberals hate the media because it's "conservative". - Snakedal337, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Why would you people think its location based.
Isn't a blog of techies smarter than that? It just pends what servers are down, and which accounts are stored there. - gcnaddict, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6works fine from DC, trogdoor ;-)
Everyone post where it works and doesnt work from. I'd also love it if someone could use Google Maps to plot out where it's failing. It might be an issue for people hooked to a certain chain of cisco routers. - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Antarctica is doing fine.
- Hydroxyl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Lots of other people.
But how ironic is it that I see an ad for Rackspace on the right... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Both my hosted and @gmail.com addresses are working fine. Honestly, though, this isn't the first time this has happened. Why is this on the front page?
- slipsec, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3well that could be due to the fact that most of the comments are moronic. "working fine here" followed by "only one account on this computer"...!!!
Ummm can we decide this is a server/db thing and not a geographic location yet?!
I idid my part and burried a bunch of the "works fine in xxxx" cruft. - Sapperlite, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7No problems here in Wisconsin.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3*watches kong walk on Skull Island gmail server* - hmmmm.... server error?
- MalDON, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yea, I am tired of everyone saying it's working. It's like we didn't hear the first time. My guess is that almost 100% of posters did not read the google posts. All of the accounts not working were all around the same letters.
- MalDON, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3According to the groups posting, it's not by region but by account name. My father lives with me and he can't log in, howerver I can log in just fine.
- Poco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Who wants to bet that the distribution is based on account and not location? All this "it works here, but not there" probably doesn't matter. It makes sense to distribute an email system by account so that the data can be localized (there is no sense in all gmail servers having access to all data for all accounts, that would be a lot of data).
By evenly distributing all the accounts to different servers around the world they get cheap load balancing. Makes sense to me.
btw - it works for me ;-) - MajorD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I get this error about once a month...it seems only when I really need GMail. Oh well, it's free.
- einfeldt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wait. I'm scared. There's someone in Antarctica, on the second coldest, darkest day of the year (June 20st), and his name is "Mr. Assman?" Whose ass, exactly, are we talking about? I can't imagine that there is more than one or two asses on the whole content at this frozen (and I do mean frozen) moment in time!
- DigeratiPrime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I am considering the block/delete button for a lot of these people.
- einfeldt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hi Nixkitty,
I completely agree with you. I would never rely on flawed free email, like hotmail, for example. It's strictly gmail for me. - astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's probably has little or nothing to do with your geographical location, and everything to do with the machine or machines that host your account information. ☂
Google's been having database problems for a couple of days:

- ready29003, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7I have been getting the "server error" message for over 4 hours now. Anyone else out there having issues?
- brandizzle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I did for about five minutes a few hours ago.
That really sucks that it's been down for that long. - disruptor108, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I've gotten this message from time to time, but never for more than 15 minutes or so. It works fine in Louisville KY though...
- s1rk3ls, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Someone already pasted this link... but obviously nobody is reading it, so I'll paste it again. In short, Google has been having problems lately, and they are aware of it, and they are working on it, and it is account based, not location based, and why can't you people understand "FREE" and "BETA"? :)

Read that page - and stop bitching about gmail... It's a great service at an amazing price!! - darthmdh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The USENET posts crack me up. All these people getting agro over a service they didn't pay for not working for them briefly.
That being said, it'd be nice considering the profile of the site for Google to give a heads up. - cliffzdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Lets all select everybody in our email address book with a gmail account, and email them a message letting them know their gmail may be down.
- canadianguy33, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Gmail has been down for me too on a couple of occassions but never did it occur to me to post it as a story on digg.
This story is beyond lame. - iDealL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's obviously not a location thing since it appears to be down in a bunch of random areas - prolly one of their database centers lost power or something and all of the accounts there are unavailable at the moment. My guess, at least.
- Nimara, on 12/25/2008, -0/+1It won't even load for me. Been trying for hours still. I'm in Orange County, CA.
- thatsiebguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Beta...
- thegreenarrow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Haha. So that's it! In my division, there are 4 people including myself. Everyone but me would lose Gmail service and they couldn't figure out why I was the only one that still had access. It would last for hours. I guess I was the chosen one in the office.
oh, btw, this is in Honolulu. and we were all in the same office with same net connection, so definitely NOT location specific. - luke--, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1O noes a free email service is down, don't do any critical business with a free email service, you've got no one to complain to!
- Marshalrusty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I think that 'Beta' implies that they may have issues. Gmail defines 'Beta' a bit differently than most developers (no RCs, not feature frozen, etc.), but 'Beta' is an unfinished product anyway you look at it.
Sit tight, I'm sure they'll get it fixed. My account seems to be down as well. - SilentPurity, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Works here in Hell, Michigan. (Seriously.)
Side Note: I read your email. - therernospoons, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone tried POP3 option for those who have it enabled before the "crash?"
- s1rk3ls, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Stop posting "Working/Not working" replys. We already know it works for some, and doesn't for others.

Google has been having problems lately, and they are aware of it, and they are working on it, and it is account based, not location based, and why can't you people understand "FREE" and "BETA"? :) - tehpoutine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Later on Digg:
my power flashed off and was wondering if anyone's is totally off. Please turn off your lights, then turn them back on repeatedly and post whether or not it worked in an unnested fashion rendering the thread worthless. - nullvariable, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1my power appears to be out. I have resorted to a solar panel to power my modem and wireless router so that I can continue to surf worthless digg threads from my laptop in the comfort of my own room :-D
friggin lame people, digg isn't for posting diagnostics, its for posting and commenting (productively in theory) on "news"
and I will be adding some people to my block list - ojstone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1When I first saw this post I got pretty pissed that people were bitching and actually dugg to the front page a story about gmail crashing. Although not common is does happen from time to time, however at this point it has gone on further than any other time in my recollection, could this be a record?
- Eric4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm having problems with Google Maps now: http://img234.imageshack.us/img234/2452/googlemapsservererror6ja.png
