- thedude13, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28GIMP (http://gimp.org/) is also another open source windows app. While not nearly as feature-rich as photoshop or other commercial imaging applications, it still has alot of nice features and best of all is free.
- warox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Notepad ++
http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net
I use it in all instances where I use notepad, and also useful as a lightweight code editor. I find it useful for editing html and css. - cday, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Also InkScape, a vector graphics editor: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=93438
And Scribus for desktop publishing: http://www.scribus.net/
Both are really nice apps. - DeathtoG4, on 10/12/2007, -2/+131. Mozilla Firefox (Web browser)

GIMP = GNU Image Manipulation Program - jasper976, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10bittorrent? filezilla? like mentioned above notepad++ is very slick

This has a good package of programs. Good to send to you family, if they listen to you about computer stuff. For many, that is a big IF. - RandomEngy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I like KeePass. I can get behind any program that encourages you to move your mouse and bang on the keyboard randomly.
- tygern, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6How about an open source LaTeX editor?
- Escamillo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7*yawn*
When I clicked this story I was expecting some "hidden gem" programs, but instead I got the same old run-of-the-mill apps like OO.o and FF that everyone already knows about. - ZippidyDoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Anyone use ClamWin?
- V1ncent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Although I love open-source software - ever since Adobe came out with Photoshop Elements, there's no reason to use Gimp. Even saying Gimp is an alternative to Photoshop (Elements or the big dog) is a HUGE stretch. Always has been.
- pixelmixer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4If you could make it open source... why only target windows? I'm a windows user and programmer, but I'd never design something that was only targetted at Windows if I could help it.
- rynoon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4What about uTorrent? It's closed-source.

Free != Open - anjinash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yes, because we forcefully came to your house and MADE you click on the link and MADE you read the article. You wasted more time posting your bitching, so stfu.
- pixelmixer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3...care to elaborate?...
- WhiskerTheMad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Inkscape kicks ass.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5What about utorrent?
- TheSeeker11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3A good site containing open source software for Windows - http://osswin.sourceforge.net/
- driya2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Regularly use:
Filezilla
Paint.Net
pdfcreator
eMule
uTorrent
VNC
7zip (poor ui!)
Dosbox -- to play alley cat
Not-so-regularly use:
Netbeans
Sharpdevelop (not a full time developer, computer not fast enough for VS2005)
ubuntu -- sometimes - Vindstille, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The GIMP isn't *****. It is the best free image Manipulation Program that is made, ever! But if you compare to Photoshop, of course it will be better. It will always be. But it cost all most $1000!
- Eisim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2and a good site for downloading the most useful progs from the OSSWIN-list to one CD - similar to http://www.theopencd.org/ - only slightly better IMO:
TTCS OSSWIN CD / http://www.ttcsweb.org/osswin-cd/ - anjinash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Try reading the Lifehacker comments, though .. there's a ton of great suggestions in there and a ton of oss software I'd never used or heard of which I'm going to give a try.
- xxNIRVANAxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2ummm, not open source?
EDIT: Wow. I need to refresh more often before I post... beaten by 49 minutes... I blame dinner. - halik, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3this list is missing Azureus, the very popular bitTorrent client
- naxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17-zip! I almost forgot about it. Since the day I found it (years ago), I've ditched both winzip and winrar. I've yet to find incompatibilities in opening zip and rar files.
- driya2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't know, don't think anyone really uses Clamwin -- not with the many free beer alternatives abound.
- biscrage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree with pixel above but,
Miranda is a great open source windows only instant messenger supporting all major protocols.
http://www.miranda-im.org
And Filezilla is a great open source ftp client for windows
http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/
I'm sure there are many more, but these are a few i use every day. - syneo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's the point of these list. To tell you about great apps you've missed.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't know if anyone else read the comments on that page, but I hate it when people suggest free software, when the topic is open source. In case I have to spell it out... FREE is not equivalent to OPEN SOURCE
- fatas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Inkscape is an amazing app. Problem with Keepass is that it looks awful in Ubuntu.
- Rubuntu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21) http://www.inkscape.org is a must and vital for the SVG standard
2) Opendocument Format Templates: http://www.worldlabel.com/Pages/openoffice-template.htm CD templates, Avery sizes..
Download Openoffice.org 2.04 it is much faster loading than ever before.
GIMP is a must for everyone!! - syneo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1TrueCrypt was "real Windows-only open-source app" for years. It was ported to Linux just one year ago.
- MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is a list of open-source Windows apps. At least there's finally a version of KeePass available for Ubuntu. Personally, I don't care what it looks like, because I never actually look at it. I enter my passwords, and then it hits the tray. It works, and that's good enough for me. Eventually, it will probably get better.
- MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1KeePass is awesome. I've used it for a while now, but wanted to switch to something cross-platform. Apparently, it's been ported to Linux (and Mac). The port is called KeePassX, and KeePass encrypted database can move gracefully between all the platforms, and that's great.
- Aldrenean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can't believe that Blender and Audacity haven't even been mentioned... I love both of them and know many people who do as well.
- syneo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's not he, but she.
- Vindstille, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I know. It is a very good program. I should just wish the feature to close { and " and HTML tags and etc. inside php files had worked better.
- syneo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There's a difference between freeware and Free Software.
Free Software (FSF, GNU) is practically the same as Open Source (OSI). - jambarama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've used Clamwin for sometime now. It really is pretty good. I don't always want my a/v to actively scan everything. I was playing around with a rootkit detector one time on a work PC and symantec corporate took it away! I know you can disable active scan, but it is obnoxious when your a/v software tells you what you can and can't have.
Anyhow, Clamwin has done excellent for me. I scheduled a scan & update to happen once a night, and I've never had a problem. If you do want active scanning, coupling Clamwin with Winpooch (open source anti-spyware) will do the trick. And it gives you tons of control over your system, but it isn't for the faint of heart. - AMCer, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1I think I shall call you Gimpy-chris....
- CoolWind, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1We need a new category of software - it has to be Reliably/Certifiably Spyware Free. Open Source Software may or may not be spyware free. Only someone who has the requisite software skills can read source code and feel confidant that a program won't be sending data to it's author.
Freeware that's distributed through the usual download sites may or may not be spyware free. Cracked programs distributed via torrents and warez sources are highly unreliable, and many are certain to include keyloggers and other nefarious subsystems. - kingamoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Java ... yuk !!!
- MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I tried Scribus a few months ago, and on Windows it's an absolute train wreck. Completely unusable. YMMV, but I'd stay away. Ragtime is not open-source, but it's free (for home use) DTP software, and it's actually pretty good.
- drakaan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I think the article poster is confusing "free as in beer" (Trillian, ad-aware, gmail) with "free as in crack" (which I'd put the technet, valued customer, and MSDN-supplied freebie copies of MS software in). He got "free as in speech" right, though...
- tck1000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've used clamwin for over a year now on two windows pc's that my wife and I own. The only thing that clamwin lacks is realtime scanning on file access. However you can associate clamwin with winpooch, you get real-time scanning, as well as the anti-spyware/tojan protection.
Anyone who puts ClamWin on their Top 10 list, probably should put WinPooch there too. - naxx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Notepad++ definitely deserves a place in the best OSS for win. It's a very light-weight program, and I've been using it for python coding and as a notepad replacement. Its plugins are also worth a look.
- hydrarulz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0well open source actually came a lot from linux...
- seventoes, on 10/12/2007, -8/+7I hate it when people do top 10 lists from top to bottom! It should start at 10 and go down to 1... Makes it suspenseful!
- ronaldst, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Other than 1-4 and 6. I had never heard of the others.
