GMail Adds Group Mailing List Functions
mashable.com — The uzi fire rapid rate of GMail feature releases has slowed a bit, but it hasn ’t quite stopped. Today, Robby Stein one of Google’s Product Marketing Managers, announced the ability to create personal mailing lists with the GMail contact manager.

- crioux, on 01/12/2008, -8/+12Really easy to setup and use. Go Google =)
- gaurav4u99, on 01/12/2008, -0/+10 i have been using this for 1 year now. i don't know how come its a new feature???
- clogmoney, on 01/12/2008, -10/+5Another fine addition to the gmail app
- mesarah, on 01/12/2008, -9/+0Great addition
- kcb2, on 01/12/2008, -7/+3Easy to set up and can be used like a distribution list in the "to" field of new emails... very nice.
- JonRohan, on 01/12/2008, -2/+74I could have sworn they always had this. Composing mail to groups? or am I missing something.
- sdloveless, on 01/12/2008, -2/+37You're not missing anything. The article author is.
- DBradbury, on 01/12/2008, -0/+10YAH!!! I thought so too! I honestly looked at this twice, and thought "Am I missing something?" I've used this feature to email members of my Student Council!
- jonahatan, on 01/12/2008, -0/+6I'm using it for years, I think...
The original article also doesn't mention it as a new feature, but as a tip:
http://gmailblog.blogspot.com/2008/01/create-perso ...
Curious how the whole internet seems to think this is new...
- jonahatan, on 01/12/2008, -0/+6I'm using it for years, I think...
- iofthestorm, on 01/12/2008, -0/+4Yeah, they've had emails to groups for a long time. I used it two years ago to email members for a project...
- MrHappy123, on 01/12/2008, -8/+2You are all idiots. This feature allows you to send an email to a group of contacts in your Contact list! Read the article you dumb fuks.
- natenovs, on 01/12/2008, -1/+8um, dumb fuk, i just check my gmail account and there is a contact group that i made back in 2005. still there, same thing. i think this blogger or google pr manager is a little confused.
- MrHappy123, on 01/12/2008, -4/+2Clearly you don't know what you speak of. Are you saying you know better than the gmail devs? LOL
Go and read this you idiot... http://gmailblog.blogspot.com/2008/01/create-perso ...- natenovs, on 01/13/2008, -0/+1then can you explain why ive have a group in my contact list for over two years?
- zeroduck, on 01/12/2008, -0/+1This has been around for a while, way before the change to the new contacts manager. I've used it a couple times to send to a group of friends, but now we just use a standard mailing list (people will still being excluded or having things sent to the wrong address--when they all sign up with the mailing list, it's their damn fault if they put the wrong address in).
- MrHappy123, on 01/12/2008, -4/+2Clearly you don't know what you speak of. Are you saying you know better than the gmail devs? LOL
- natenovs, on 01/12/2008, -1/+8um, dumb fuk, i just check my gmail account and there is a contact group that i made back in 2005. still there, same thing. i think this blogger or google pr manager is a little confused.
- SmackMyMac, on 01/12/2008, -0/+36They've had group mailing for as long as I've had Gmail and that's been at least 2 years. I used it to send schedules to my employees.
- natenovs, on 01/12/2008, -0/+1seriously, what the hell is this?
- zeazzz, on 01/12/2008, -10/+2Alright, so who should I spam first?
- jazzboyrules, on 01/12/2008, -2/+20What the hell is going on? I don't remember not having the group function in Gmail... Even lifehacker put that article up today. Don't people fiddle with all the buttons and links?
- ccanni1028, on 01/12/2008, -0/+3I've been using this function for over a year. It's been around for a long time.
- RobLiefeld, on 01/12/2008, -21/+0I'll stick with Hotmail... GMail isn't that reliable
- seldon452, on 01/12/2008, -0/+7What are you talking about? Been using gmail for a long time and it is totally reliable.
- RobLiefeld, on 01/12/2008, -11/+0When you have a ton of fans like me... GMail is slow and buggy. Hotmail handles all my mail fine.
- cankillar, on 01/12/2008, -0/+8Enjoy your ***** of spam.
- seldon452, on 01/12/2008, -0/+4Damn, I wish I had as many fans as you. You are just better than me.
Will you have my babies? - kaph, on 01/12/2008, -0/+3Not that it probably matters to you, but you just lost one with that comment.
- RobLiefeld, on 01/12/2008, -11/+0When you have a ton of fans like me... GMail is slow and buggy. Hotmail handles all my mail fine.
- jonahatan, on 01/12/2008, -0/+1That you prefer hotmail is ok, but you're statement about gmail is not substantiated..
My experience is that gmail is way faster and LESS buggy than hotmail (the latter often won't load in the full version). That and the fact that gmail doesn't keep my e-mail hostage is a good reason to vote for gmail over hotmail.
- seldon452, on 01/12/2008, -0/+7What are you talking about? Been using gmail for a long time and it is totally reliable.
- seldon452, on 01/12/2008, -1/+12Who does not use Gmail these days? It is clearly the best web e-mail out there.
- stalefries, on 01/12/2008, -5/+3The vast majority of all people I know. I think only 3 of my friends use Gmail.
- IndigoMoss, on 01/12/2008, -6/+1I'm pretty sure you guys are thinking of doing it manually, Where you add multiple contacts in by hand and then save that, at least that's the only way I knew how to do it when I ran a gaming clan. I didn't think there was a button to just click on the contacts you want to add, but maybe you guys are right, it's not something I do anymore.
- FoolsRun, on 01/12/2008, -0/+5No, I've definitely had groups in my contact manager since long before they rolled out the new look.
- adooga, on 01/12/2008, -0/+5No, the easy to use group mail feature was one of the main reasons I switched to gmail over a year ago.
There's nothing new there.- IndigoMoss, on 01/12/2008, -0/+1Alright, my mistake.
- SolaFida, on 01/12/2008, -6/+0Finally!
- natenovs, on 01/12/2008, -0/+1it's been there for at least 2 years.
- Gryffydd, on 01/12/2008, -1/+4Now they just need to add the ability to attach multiple files at a time....
- D3koy, on 01/12/2008, -4/+2I see what you did there...
- daza, on 01/12/2008, -1/+1That and give everyone more than 3 invites!
- Crushkilla, on 01/12/2008, -7/+1This makes my dick hard
- StageMgr2Stars, on 01/12/2008, -0/+3You need a girlfriend then.
- Gryffydd, on 01/13/2008, -0/+1Now you just need to find something to make it longer than 3"
- gregdogum, on 01/12/2008, -1/+25Why the ***** is this ***** on the front page? GMAIL has had freaking groups absolutely forever. Oh, I see. A top digger dugg (MrBabyMan) this so that's why it hit the front page. Freaking stupid.
- FTLJohnson, on 01/12/2008, -15/+1Um... Google groups and sending mail to multiple contacts is not the same thing... Just so you know when you are being buried...
- FoolsRun, on 01/12/2008, -1/+8He's not talking about Google Groups, he's talking about Groups in the contact manager. I've had groups in my contact manager since before they rolled out the new three-pane look. This story isn't news.
- FTLJohnson, on 01/12/2008, -15/+1Um... Google groups and sending mail to multiple contacts is not the same thing... Just so you know when you are being buried...
- adooga, on 01/12/2008, -0/+13Not new!
I've been using this feature for over a year. - FTLJohnson, on 01/12/2008, -1/+2Suggestions for Google:
HTML signatures
Signatures based on what e-mail address you are using
Signature float (This shouldn't need a hack or a greasemonkey script to accomplish)
Better feature integration with Google Apps (considering many of those people PAY, shouldn't THEY get features first?)
Actually preview recent conversations IN the contacts view (I shouldn't have to load a new page, I didn't have to with the OLD contacts manager, and I shouldn't have to with the new one)
Send ON Date/Time (You can delay sending mail in your outbox in Outlook... why not GMail...? Wouldn't this be fairly simple?
And lastly... A FREAKING API for the Contacts. Some of us don't want to be locked into Google's half assed contact manager... I would like a direct sync with Plaxo... kthx- cjdevlin, on 01/12/2008, -0/+3another suggestion, group labels.... if I put my contacts into a group. I should be able to label them so I can separate my friends/ family/ school/ etc.
- daza, on 01/12/2008, -0/+1"Signatures based on what e-mail address you are using"
This would really make things a lot easier, sincerely hope they include it in their next update. - alanr19, on 01/12/2008, -0/+1I agree with all but 2 of your suggestions:
HTML Sigs = 1996 Gayness when there was a rush to HTML-ize everything, it failed. Users might be reading the email on mobile device or text only reader and would annoy the ***** out of them. People who use HTML sigs in outlook are usually clueless ***** anyway like self important middle management types who spend hours prettying up their email sig. Pathetic.
Delaying feature roll-out to free users = Gay, and would lead to a leaking of users to competing services that don't punish free users. User's email is what generates money for Google from context sensitive ads so although the user isn't paying, they are still generating revenue for Google, they also make up about 99.94% of Gmail's userbase. A number not to be ***** with.
- darkhero, on 01/12/2008, -2/+3yea, more spam.
- pfass, on 01/12/2008, -0/+7Old news, but they need to add a "Merge Contacts" feature. I just love copying an email address, deleting that contact, go to the original contact and pasting in their second email address. Good times.
- vandy73, on 01/12/2008, -0/+0This was actually first featured on the official gmail blog today as if it was a new feature and all these other sites like lifehacker ran with it but this isnt new.
what i want to have is the ability to send mail to your groups in the mobile version of gmail.- alanr19, on 01/12/2008, -0/+1Yeah but it got publicity, and thats the name of the game. Its an old and obvious feature but it got them on digg.com
- MedicSean37, on 01/12/2008, -1/+2Is anybody still stuck with the old version of gmail?
- Nuahaun, on 01/12/2008, -0/+1I am; good to know that I'm not the only one stilling waiting for an update.
- Blubi, on 01/12/2008, -0/+1I guess you use another display language than English US. You have to change the Gmail display language to English US if you use another language. You do this in the settings under the general tab. As far as I know, other languages are not supported (yet?).
- Nuahaun, on 01/12/2008, -0/+1Wow, thanks. Who knew that English (UK) was a completely different language from English (US)?
- killadingo, on 01/12/2008, -0/+3I've been using groups on Gmail for at least a couple Fantasy Football seasons to contact my league. Why is this on the front page?
- Atomic1fire, on 01/12/2008, -1/+1gm might not announce stuff till they know a majority have it on their accounts
- eyegraphix, on 01/12/2008, -0/+2Question for you diggers: How do I mark messages from a certain person as NOT spam so they always appear in my inbox and not in the spam folder? For now, I just have a filter that star's the messages from this person.
- Blubi, on 01/12/2008, -0/+2"If you find that some senders' messages are consistently being mislabeled as spam, you can prevent this by adding their email addresses to your Contacts list. Gmail will always deliver messages from members of your Contacts list to your inbox." Found on gmail's help page here: http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answe ...
- eyegraphix, on 01/12/2008, -0/+2Thanks man, I guess that was pretty simple.
- Blubi, on 01/12/2008, -0/+2"If you find that some senders' messages are consistently being mislabeled as spam, you can prevent this by adding their email addresses to your Contacts list. - coOLcAT, on 01/12/2008, -0/+4This is stupid - was the author of this post living in a cave since G-mail started?
- jonahatan, on 01/12/2008, -0/+2http://gmailblog.blogspot.com/2008/01/create-perso ... ehm... that's the source... seems to me that that's a pretty close source :-)
but I agree if you think that the mashable author should have done his homework! The original post doesn't state that it's a new feature..
- jonahatan, on 01/12/2008, -0/+2http://gmailblog.blogspot.com/2008/01/create-perso ... ehm... that's the source... seems to me that that's a pretty close source :-)
- SilverSeraph, on 01/12/2008, -2/+0Old feature, new way to do it!
- NickLindeman, on 01/12/2008, -0/+1I liked it better when I could go to the groups and check mark which people I wanted to email if I didn't want to send someone an email that was in my friends group. I don't like the whole group contact thing that they have now.
- david11, on 01/12/2008, -1/+0Gmail rocks now and then
- alanr19, on 01/12/2008, -0/+3This has been around for years on Gmail. Typical mashable crap article, just because its news to them they think its new to everyone.
Way to do your ***** research guys.
. - xxdesmus, on 01/12/2008, -0/+3Guys...this has been in Gmail for YEARS. Yes, at least 2 years now.
- betheball11, on 01/12/2008, -1/+1I find it amazing that it is news when Google comes out with something yahoo has had for years! The list of applications and features that yahoo has beaten goolge to market on is very long.
- mike503, on 01/12/2008, -0/+0weird, i never even tried or noticed that the group names could pop up. i guess i never started typing the beginning of the names. what annoys me is i've created labels "Business" etc, and then i went to create a group for people and it's taken. that -really- bugs me, since i have used all the common names (business, friends, family) for labels already... it would be nice if they could figure out how to decouple those.
anyway, i've learned something new! i wanted small group mail capabilities (so i could email everyone in a certain group) and it was there the whole time. crazy. - mrgreenjeans9, on 01/13/2008, -0/+1in other news, google has offered yet another doodad to muck up a perfectly good email system (older version)
