- jsd8cc, on 10/12/2007, -5/+32As much as I hate Myspace, Friendster is just a stupid name and I refuse to say it.
- dankoleary, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Personally I prefer Facebook. All the custom HTML on Myspace looks horrible, and is slow as hell. Friendster totally missed the boat on this one.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Friendster mounting a comeback? Right. That'd be like Alta Vista mounting a comeback.
- malkir, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Does it bother anyone else that there are patents for completely obvious things that are in no way unique or original?
- cosmotic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Patent 2.0? Sigh.
- ZennZero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I heard about this yesterday on NPR. I think Friendster is a day late and a dollar short. The market for myspace/facebook type social networking sites seems pretty saturated unless they can bring something genuinely novel and desirable to the table. Friendster already botched this opportunity once and myspace/facebook capitalized on their sluggishness and took over the market.
I have a feeling that Friendster sees the writing on the wall and rather than competing, they are going to wield their mighty patent portfolio. - hungryforair, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8You'll never get some Goth/Emo wanna-be kid to use a site with such an upbeat name as Friendster
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Their feature might actually work, the problem is they made it useless when they thought it'd be a good idea to automatically add Tom to everyone's friend list. Which makes him a common link to just about everybody.
- uptown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6No idea why you're being voted down ... for those that don't know what he's talking about check out the patent that Friendster was granted:
http://www.redherring.com/Article.aspx?a=17498&hed=Friendster+Wins+Patent - Steel_Blue, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13"Friendster got kinda gay."
- trollick, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10A company that patents "social networking" deserves to die a painful death.
- plugues, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7then try saying "orkut", google's social network that was completely forgotten by the usa. in brazil orkut is just as huge as myspace is up north, to the point where it's now being used by politicians as a tool for the 2006 elections
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Friendster sucked initially and will never go bigger than other networks...
It's just how this kinda stuff works... myspace got it right the first time, so people use it, and it hasn't changed much! same with youtube! - loof, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5myspace should never be called right for any reason.
- jamester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3MySpace, Friendster, Facebook... sheesh. So many profiles, so little time.
- bieber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hagnar, patents won't just be the end of the internet. Think bigger, like, computing as we know it.
- canewediggit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3this just in - pets.com receives $20mil in VC money for a relaunch, the sock puppet is resurrected, and the bubble is back!
- combatcupcake, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Friendster had 1 great feature that is useless on Myspace.
The 'is in your extended network' ACTUALLY WORKED! If someone was say, your friend's friend, it would say that they are like, 2 steps away from you. A cool way to see how the 'network' actually works, and who is who's friend. Myspace just says 'extended network' for everyone, making it totally useless. - gosix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Conformists! *flips hair back*
- osbjmg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Friendster was also horribly slow.
- surgen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thats one of my biggest gripes with MySpace, its just HURTS to look at some of the horridly designed pages people make.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4you mean it fell in love with another male web site?
- sdubois92, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4MySpace sucks, they need to stop allowing people to use costum HTML designs.
- bontaq, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I don't understand as to why the government would even grant the patent. I should apply for a patent on "A system in which users can register unique IDs".
- KoZo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@archerx - its filipino not philipino, and one can post your image in imageshack, but i wont go that far.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Friendster has only one thing going for it, patents. Without them they wouldn't have a chance right now. Eventually they're going to sue MySpace, but it's a matter of time. They just received an influx of funding to pay for their "super awesome" lawyers -- so I'm sure soon they'll let those lawyers loose to take out the competition. Getting that patent was the smartest thing that Friendster ever did, and one of the most stupid decisions that the US government could allow (seriously...it's social networking! this site would most likely be in violation it's such a broad patent).
Anyway, keep your eyes peeled for lawsuits to fly. - bram, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2They really missed the boat. By marketing themselves as a dating site they missed about 99% of the possible demographic. The sad thing is the site could have been adapted for a full blowing community site by simply changing the dating content to friend content. Freaking Idiots!
- kevin.gc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1facebook's network feature is better
- h3smith, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7The only think myspace has going for it is the Network Effect http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_effect
Other than that, it is a shotty design and implementation. the entire site is horribly inefficent, crashes constantly, and sllllllllllllllllllllow
I doubt friendster can take myspace now, myspace has the numbers. clearly the people who use it don't care that it is ***** coding behind the scenes. - madgamer01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, they do have the Web 2.0 blue gradient and "Beta" label.
- archerx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2seems to be popular with the philipinos.... I mean a lot of them are leaching my art for their profile backgrounds, luckily they're not popular enough to make a dent in my bandwidth at all :p
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Exactly...as a #3 myself, it's been useful in finding #4s. :D
- BIGmog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I need a date. Maybe I'll give friendster a try.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That poor sock puppet never saw it coming....haha :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Any body seen http://evaal.com. Do you think they have a chance?
- sibhod, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I sure hope it comes back. My user number was "133337", so of course I got ALL the babes.
- ejvyas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Orkut rocks!
- suckafree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Friendster and myspace are for:
1) Kids
2) Dorks
3) Sickos/Perverts
4) 19-year-old Asian girls looking for a husband - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I have a MySpace, but that is more to promote my "business" than me personally wanting social interaction. As far as the social interaction, there are about five people that I like communicating with but who never seem to use email, so their myspace is the only way to get in touch with them (stupid, I know!).
I've never used Friendster. I never did use friendster. I never would use friendster. Whenever a website finally gets around to making a semi-social network THAT IS NOT CENTERED AROUND BEING THE MOST POPULAR PERSON AND POSTING THE MOST CRAP AND SPAMMING THE MOST CRAP TO GET YOUR ATTENTION FROM PEOPLE . . . let me know. - johnarthur, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0Wow, I missed the boat...First I even heard of Friensdter
