- tocksin, on 10/12/2007, -18/+106why does any story which begins "Free Energy" not automatically get labelled innacurate?
- cmiller1, on 10/12/2007, -7/+89You already said already once already.
- duke_nate, on 10/12/2007, -17/+64*With our current understading of Physics and Energy.
- wurzelgummage, on 10/12/2007, -19/+61We already laughed at this ***** once already on digg.

low on details? try no details at all.. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+45Free software, free energy, free love, but where's what's really important? Free beer!
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -12/+49I defy scientists worldwide to disprove that monkeys fly out of my butt. Just because convention says it can't be done, people harbor a natural skepticism about the proven fact that winged rhesus monkeys propel themselves from my rectum on demand. Well, I'm putting my reputation and venture capital on the line and inviting scientists to disprove this wonderous innovation in posterior avio-simian ejection. I'm confident that my assertions will be proven and the world can enjoy the benefits of a limitless supply of flying monkeys (which come out of my butt).
- eplawless, on 10/12/2007, -21/+49No matter what their claims, I'm sure their machine follows the laws of thermodynamics, and the energy is coming from somewhere. And maybe, when the scientists find where that energy is coming from, it will still be 100% clean. And maybe then we will have our solution for global warming, and for wars for oil. Maybe, before you ridicule, think of the possible ramifications of this technology.
- CaptRR, on 10/12/2007, -1/+29electrosoccertu, you know, you were doing farely well in your argument right up until the end, when you claimed your friend has an easy secret to near limitless energy. Now I am afraid you seem more like a crazy person than an independent thinker, though you are a crazy person that does make a good argument, at least in the beginning.
- ZaNkY, on 10/12/2007, -5/+32Sounds like blabber to me. Details would be cool.... Next time try linking to a source that actually says something useful. The article talks about how fast they became popular, high ranked on Google and Blogging galore. But what exactly are we talking about?
"This hard-to-believe vision of a free, energy source was announced in an advert in the Economist"
Really, you publish something so revolutionary it could change the world in an Advertisement? Wow, when I solve Cold Fusion in under 10 bucks, I'm gonna put an advert on Google for my work.....
If it's hard to believe and sounds too good to be true, it usually is. - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -4/+30What evidence do you have to back up this claim? As soon as some further research of your anus is done, I would be interested in making an investment on your source of flying monkeys.
- staydead, on 10/12/2007, -10/+35We need a category for these stories..
The "Send Us Your Money and We'll Tell You Stuff You Want to Hear" category. - CiXeL, on 10/12/2007, -20/+44I'm finding I'm reading digg less and less. I'll probably go back to slashdot soon.
Digg is beginning to really suck ass as it gains morons who have no grasp of science.
Once upon a time digg gained the respect of all the slashdot users and made them switch, now they're going to observe as they all go back as they watered down the site to the lowest common denominator. - AgentEntropy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+27If that "Send Us Your Money" bit is about Steorn, you should get your facts straight. They're a privately owned company, and are not accepting investors at this time. They don't want your money until the technology is proven.
This is in no way an endorsement of Steorn, or their supposed free energy technology, I just want to make sure that they aren't accused of anything they haven't actually done. Have they lied? Maybe, or else they are just really very confused (oh I suppose they could be right, but I don't find it likely). But they haven't tried to cheat anyone, yet. - olegk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26video, please
- hackwrench, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24A bit low on details than other stories surrounding Steorn

Well, the laws of thermodynamics haven't got any really glaring flaws that would lead us to believe that there might be more to them than what we've already observed. They're pretty basic.
"it wasn't all that long ago the scientific law stated without a shadow of a doubt that the sun revolved around the earth."
Nope. You can thank the Church for that one. In fact, when Copernicus pointed out that the movements of celestial bodies immediately become simpler/more accurate to predict when using a heliocentric model, he was pretty much laughed out of Europe because he contradicted the Church. - Hobbes512, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22I've secretly been to Steorn's headquarters, and I know their terrible, terrible secret...
Steorn's free energy is people! It's made out of people! - tommertron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20Hey Cyxil, guess what, if you're planning on going back to Slashdot, you should know that this story was also posted there over a week ago.

Aaahahaha... this is EXACTLY why they do what they do. - kenadak, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21a perpetual motion machine would so fundamentally change the world that there would be NO need to put an ad in the economist to get people to believe you. Make a product and sell it. Patent it and make a fortune(not to mention take away any power the middle east might have). Don't make pretty websites that prove your a real company!

do these guys have the most revolutionary technology of the last millenia? who knows. we'll all have to wait and see. regardless of my healthy skepticism, i for one sure as hell hope they do. - graystar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19Depends how you define "free", the sun is a good start.

Well, it's just as possible as finding out that humans don't really need oxygen to breathe. Sure it's been failed to be disproven millions and millions of times, and it has never failed to explain things in several centuries of experimentation, observation, casual building of machines, throwing of balls into the air, newton's cradles, etc. It's possible that it's wrong if you have imagination... So I suggest you use your imagination to disprove my example theory for yourself, since IT has never been disproven .... Here, I'll even give you the large plastic bag. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Diggers are so ***** gullible.

First of all, this is English, so anything that gets used enough IS a word.
Secondly, it's in the Webster's dictionary (and probably a lot of other ones too.)

Stop trying to make other people look ignorant - you're just doing the same to yourself. - Xisting, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Right here:
http://www.freebeer.org - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15I'm seriously disturbed by the ***** level of articles getting diggs these days. I thought the more democratic approach to pushing out the news was supposed to improve it? This crap doesn't even deserve a good wipe onto a single square of toilet paper.
- DanAtkinson, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13This was widely reported last week.
Nothing new has been announced, only that hundreds of 'scientists' have signed up to test their work. - hackwrench, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11That's why you put the solar panels in space
- Iandefor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10You fools commenting on digg know nothing about what you speak. This is not "creating energy" it is simply tapping into a near limitless supply that our current model of physics doesn't approve of. Our model can't explain gravitation, and it can't explain electromagnetism."
Yes, it can. Relativity and Maxwell's theory of light do the job just dandily. In fact, they express a very pleasing symmetry. I'm not closed to the fact that there might be another force we don't know of, but if it's so weak that no particle accelerator experiment ever detected any deviations from the Standard Model, I'm not inclined to believe it would be a practical source of energy.
"So don't be so eager to assume that the fundamentals it stipulates (in this case about electromagnetism) are beyond reproof."
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof. In this instance, it would require demonstrating it's been there all along and our tools were too unsophisticated to see it. Which would mean invalidating the entire body of the last half-century's particle physics research.
"Go ahead, blindly mod up the parent because that is what you were taught in schools. You all are the ones that hate on the catholic church because they made a heliocentric solar system heretical."
Well, when they release details of their device, a new theory of particle physics that accurately explains physical phenomena while closing any gaps between current theory and observation
But you're doing the exact same thing that they did; you're condemning it without actually evaluating the evidence.
Don't expect me to prove to you how this works. I'm not going to give you the world. I'm just telling you that my friend already has it. I've looked over it, and its NOT THAT COMLICATED. Anyone with an elementary understanding of electromagnetics could come up with the basic design behind this thing. - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -13/+22Automatic report of 'inaccurate'. A ***** alert has also been issued.
Reason: "Free Energy" in title of submission. - adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15"Even if I'm throwing away fifty bucks, how do I pick up stock in this company?"
*cough*
I have a few thousand shares, let me send you my paypal address and you can buy a couple thousand off of me. I'll even give you a discount for being the first! Thirty bucks a share sound Ok? - Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10"Sounds really interesting, but I want something detailed to READ!"
You won't ever find that because this is obviously fake, and a marketing stunt. :-p - Quactaur, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14They're not really claiming to do that, they're just claiming they can thwart another rule, entropy.
Entropy states that everything tends to get more disorganized (that is, everything holds less and less energy, and has less potential to do so). THat means that highly efficient conversions of energy are rare, and if they do occur, the materials that are involved have to be "set up" in a more energy-wasting process before. - Lomi, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14You are assuming that time is linear and that there is a beginning of the universe. What if it's just one giant loop that has no beginning or end, just starts over again once it gets back around to the point where the big bang happened?
- Tiak, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10"Why are people burying it?"
Well, other than the fact that they have no proof for their device, how about the fact that it was on the front page TWICE last week, one day after the other.... With no new news now.... Sorry to be the one exclaiming "DUPE!" but the same story gets old pretty fast.

Remember that episode of Pinky and the Brain where the brain used non-dairy creamer and microwaves to win his case because no one knows how they work? - Hermitwise, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13I find it alittle arrogant that people won't even entertain the idea, I mean sure it sounds like bunk, but to say free energy or the creation of energy is impossible is to assume our model of reality is perfect, which I don't believe for one second, we barely know anything about the nature of things.
- Timmmm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Their plan is to make a big noise about this, get lots of interest, make an IPO and then run off with gullable VC's money.
Of course they don't have free energy. Anyone with two brain cells can see that. - Ibox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10"The story has stoked colossal interest, cynicism and conspiracy theories. Bloggers have claimed that Steorn's office does not exist, that the whole thing is a PR stunt for Microsoft's Xbox "
How the fuk dose anyone make this connection?
I mean seriously. - Lomi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Mobile cell phones never charged and cars never refueled... ***** I can do that now, I just dont use them :p.
- maiku00, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13MY freind has access to top secret alien technology. He works at the government, and he has told me all about it. How could you not believe me?
- Sukino, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15@triplehelix
That wasn't a scientific law, just usual stupid religious dogma. - Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"*With our current understading of Physics and Energy."
Well, let's say we can. Why would then the universe look like this, and not a mass of near-infinite energy? You open up for a ton of problems to explain if energy would be creatable on a whim. I have a feeling you aren't a physicist? - thetaco82, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11That's because people are stupid.
