- Ventolin, on 11/16/2007, -7/+97Dammit, i thought it said free wife.
- numberneal, on 11/16/2007, -1/+47great, now i could work from the luxury of my own park bench.
- bimtott, on 11/16/2007, -3/+41hah! my work (with no wireless in the office, and no access to youtube) is right in the zone. I think this finally justifies getting a Jesus phone...
- H2Glitch2007, on 11/16/2007, -3/+36Free wifi = Bittorrent Spree
- benroy, on 11/16/2007, -8/+36the title is misleading. it makes it sound as if ALL of manhattan is covered. the map shows that it covers about 18 blocks.
- HomerS1, on 11/16/2007, -0/+27Trust me, there is no such thing as a free wife. :-)
- ChrisF79, on 11/16/2007, -4/+28That is really cool. It'll be awesome when Manhattan has Verizon FIOS as well! Great things coming out of NYC lately.
- ibeetle, on 11/16/2007, -2/+23You will be lucky if you get dial up speeds circa 1995.
- pu-z, on 11/16/2007, -0/+20I'd rather have free tugboats?
- inactive, on 11/16/2007, -2/+20But CBS managed to make the signal cover exactly 18 blocks in a perfect rectangle shape, not one street farther. Gotta give them credit for that.
- kurosen, on 11/16/2007, -1/+17They couldn't stetch it just a drop to 37th? Time to get a pringles can I guess ;)
- Hojohto, on 11/16/2007, -1/+17Not to be a downer but I'm sure someone will screw it up for everybody.
- Coven, on 11/16/2007, -0/+15Go down into the Apple store and flip open your Dell and see how long they let you sit there :-p
- till, on 11/16/2007, -5/+19Good for NYC I guess. ;) Since Midtown is dead after 10 it's good to have wifi to check out where to go. :P
- robalesi, on 11/16/2007, -0/+13HA!! This zone cuts off right at 30 Rock's front door. I guess CBS didn't want give NBC any free internets.
- ibeetle, on 11/16/2007, -2/+15Not free... ad supported. Log on to your computer watch a 30 sec ad for Survivor. Check your email; watch a 30 secound ad for the Nightly News with Katie Couric. You have to download their web application, not available for Mac or Linux, which contains a non-removable banner ad. No thanks.
There are already a thousand free and open wifi signals all over Manhattan. Hell, the Apple store is in this area and they have wifi and they are open 24 hours. - markwilcox, on 11/16/2007, -3/+14Doesn't your office have wifi anyway?
- Murdats, on 11/16/2007, -3/+14just because you lept to conclusions doesnt mean its the fault of the wording.
the title says free wifi IN manhattan, as in inside manhattan, now unless im mistaken the story is about how in an area inside the borders of manhattan there is free wifi. - swoopdog, on 11/16/2007, -1/+12I would rather have a tugjob on a tugboat.
- inactive, on 11/16/2007, -5/+14bit torrent heaven.
- zbennett, on 11/16/2007, -1/+10Now the competition is on, do I get better access from CBS or from the 5 neighbors I have who leave their routers open?
- ninjan, on 11/16/2007, -2/+10You might be asking what CBS gets out of the deal - ad impressions!
Wonder if adblock or something can get rid of them. - Rixta, on 11/16/2007, -0/+8Dead after 10pm....? Which Midtown are you talking about....the one I work in is crazy busy all night.
- Orion682, on 11/16/2007, -2/+9The article mentions VoIP, implying that the speeds will be significantly higher than that. Way to fail.
- GuyeNoir, on 11/16/2007, -0/+7Nah, it'll probably be slowed down by heavy traffic. A lot of people will be using it.
- dojonz, on 11/16/2007, -0/+6More like coming into NYC.
- Coven, on 11/16/2007, -1/+7Except no. Hell's Kitchen is west of 8th Ave, from 34th to 57th. The area depicted in the map in TFA is simply Midtown Manhattan, including the Times Square neighborhood.
- LOLSteelBullet, on 11/16/2007, -0/+5They can but the vast majority of users of this will be too stupid to figure out how.
- tbenathan, on 11/16/2007, -1/+6Downtown in Manhattan, we do get Verizon FiOS. It's awesome.
- Coven, on 11/16/2007, -0/+4Sometimes the 30/5 from cablevision isn't worth the trouble of THEIR customer service and support. Their call in centers aren't exactly stellar either.
- Ellsass, on 11/05/2008, -0/+4He was referring to the "jump to conclusions" mat mentioned in Office Space, but the joke still didn't work.
- G0lashes, on 11/16/2007, -0/+4Yeah, ***** companies giving an extremely convenient service with a slight monetary gain! What a bunch of *****!
- arjung, on 11/16/2007, -1/+5how does a usb wireless adapter work differently than the normal wireless card in your laptop? (stronger signal?)
and what does this have to do with free wifi in parts of nyc? - inactive, on 11/16/2007, -1/+5Manhattan? There's a lot more to Manhattan than those few blocks. More like free WiFi in a subset of Manhattan. Got me all excited for nothing you wanker. I need a cigarette. And where's my damn coffee?!
- passedoutghost, on 11/16/2007, -1/+4What's an iTouch? Is it like a jPhone?
- jacksprrow, on 11/16/2007, -0/+3uh... CBS hosting? talk about network monitoring up the ass.. say good bye to privacy
- WaterDragon, on 11/16/2007, -0/+3This could be bad news for Starbucks, as it might take away all the customers who pay their outrageous prices just to sit there and use the free wifi they provide (and drink their crappy coffee, so full of pesticides and farm chemical residues).,
- murf43143, on 11/16/2007, -1/+4So now they can monitor what CBS shows we download via BT. =)
- cplusplus, on 11/16/2007, -1/+4Do you love the rent too?
- GianDoe, on 11/16/2007, -1/+4where are you going in friggin midtown after 10? times square is hellified busy at night too, but i don't know a new yorker who would go there by choice. it's all tourist bs
- dkbg, on 11/16/2007, -0/+3There is no iTouch! This man is using a non-existent brand name.
- ZekeSulastin, on 11/16/2007, -0/+3... and if that happens, you just switch back to a non-CBS network. OMGZORZ, t3h comp3t1t10nz!
- GuyeNoir, on 11/16/2007, -0/+3Sneak in and install Linux on one of the display computers. Super bonus points for getting all of them before they realize it.
- BattleChimp, on 11/16/2007, -1/+3lulz@urMum
- Gndoab, on 11/16/2007, -0/+2NYC FTW LOL
- ibeetle, on 11/16/2007, -0/+2Wrong. My mom has dial-up and we use iChat voice all the time.
- GuyeNoir, on 11/16/2007, -0/+2It's better than nothing. They also said it was a test. If it does well, they may extend it to cover the whole island, or at least a larger portion of it.
- dibby1, on 11/16/2007, -0/+2It's not free anymore though ... READ MAN
- Dested, on 11/16/2007, -1/+3Do you think girls have their nuts on the inside?
- VikNik, on 11/16/2007, -2/+4Cool, but slow :(
