- kamizu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5i have no respect for that site anymore. seriously, the only difference between the register and the onion is that the onion is funny. that's it.
- roostersheep, on 01/16/2009, -1/+5Could it possibly be a black car parked next to a white one?
- silent1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Yes, they exist. I'm surprised you're only learning about them now. People are *constantly* crashing them. Have a look: http://www.textamerica.com/user.images.x/71/IMG_433571/_1127/TZ201127104954606.jpg
- awhite2600, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think it might be a car (or some other object) on a pole. You often see things like that near car dealerships or auto wreckers.
- InvisionUK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Riiight, okay. Now, The Register likes to have a laugh sometimes. It could quite possibly be a sign, or a black car parked beside it, looking like a shadow with the low resolution unable to make the details very clear. Don't call "fake". Please. It was never intended to be taken seriously.
"i have no respect for that site anymore. seriously, the only difference between the register and the onion is that the onion is funny. that's it."
Well, the fact that The Register has real articles rather than joke ones has nothing to do with it right? - Utopian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"It looks like a sign with a shadow to me... Look at the other shadows, same direction."
Right... because if it was actually a flying car it's shadow would be in the opposite direction... - sumdog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's a damn car on a stick man! We had one in my college town outside a car dealership. They guy took an old RX2, stripped out the engine, fuel tank, etc, and put it on a 20 ft tall pole.
- pr0t0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2RON WEASLEY!
Flying a car in the plain site of muggles! Just wait until your father hears about this!
Oh, and congratulations Ginny dear, we are so proud of you.
--Mrs. Weasley - b00le, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The double image effect on pan-sharpened QuickBird images is not that easy to see - have a look at the cars on the motorway to the north-east and you can see these coloured 'ghosts' - red ones show up best. The multispectral images have only 1/4 the resolution of the panchromatic so they don't look like much - all the geometric information you see is coming from the pan channel. An object needs to be moving about 50 mph - not many boats go that fast... With aircraft the two images can be quite widely separated - but don't forget that the sharpest images on Google Earth are aerial photos, not satellite images.
- shoobaloo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0move your pointer to 32 degrees 00'54.66" S and 115 degrees 47'27.95" E
sort of looks like another flying car - kenisaim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0its a bloody water tank noobs!!
- DrEbola, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Call the president, this is serious news.
- motorbikematt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Interesting that it's in the 2006 DigitalGlobe set and not 2005 set, (look at the dates between the web version and the GoogleMaps version).
That being said, I have a hard time believing b00le's statement that it's not moving at all because if you look out at the waterways, you'll see that the boats are travel ling at a good clip, and they're not blurred as he claims they should be. Moreover, there are plenty of very sharp and clear photos of aircraft flying at altitude, or taking off from runways (search the links in these comments for more).
I can't say whether or not this is moving, but IMHO, the author can't either. I also can't understand why this made it to the front page. - kenisaim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0its a fregin water tank n0000bs!!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It looks like a propane tank.
- mos6507, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The Moller Skycar is one of the most successful and long-lasting scams in the history of mankind. It works because we all WANT it to be true. But common sense indicates that it would not work. The Moller skycar is basically an unstable helicopter. It doesn't have the wings that it would take to make it into a VTOL aircraft and it doesn't have the rear stabilizing propellor that it would take to make it into a helicopter. So the thing can only hover.

But it's managed to give a guy a living gathering donations from the gullible and wishful thinking. - diggdat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To me, this looks like a Sky Diving Canopy coming down with the shadow underneath it. Not the old round ones but the rectangular ones...
- b00le, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The article says the object is moving at about 80 mph - given that the image is from DigitalGlobe's QuickBird satellite, I can say (I work with QuickBird images all the time) that it is not moving at all. The QB sensor acquires Panchromatic and Multi-spectral images separately, and merging the two datasets - which is how these hi-res images are made - fast-moving objects show separation between the two pasrts of the image, with a blurred colour part and a sharper grey copy. I can't guess the height without the image metadata but it's a few metres - my guess would be a tehered balloon or some kind of advertising structure.
- LucasOman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd really love to know how the analyst figured out that it's going 80 knots. Did it get ahead of its shadow? har har.
- NinjaBoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It looks like a sign in the second image.
- Quakes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To me, it kind of looks like a parachuter who's almost reached the ground...
- Chreestopher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0has anyone ever seen a water tank that is raised off the ground on a farm, Golf course or any agricultural facility, please flying car. honestly throw me a bone here
- Zorn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1We've had flying cars in Australia for years. Damn Google!
- sdfisher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Look at the other shadows, same direction."
Imagine that, a shadow being cast in the same direction as every other shadow. Well, that's proof right there... - Bandito, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Oh great, the muggles caught on again.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1looks like our secret is out..... now how will aussies be unique?
- FullMetalMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Next thing you know there will be Google imagery of a Wizard School!
- WayneGoode, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There has got to be a digg reader somewhere around there. Take a photo and post it to end this. Please. However,
Shadows: I checked the buildings around it in Google Earth and the shadow is in the correct direction.
Two cars. The black area is solid black--it shows no details. I don't think it is a car
Supports: Yes. After looking again, I can see 3 supports holding it up. The 4th is underneath.
I think it is a canopy or tent. - duke_nate, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"Could it be real? Do flying cars actualy exsist? Is this one of them?"
Are you an idiot? Yes! - rnelsonee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@sdawg: They do better than post the coordinates. If you have Google Earth, just click this link and it'll launch and go right to it:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/01/23/flying_car.kmz
For those who are wondering, set the pointer to
32 degrees, 00'42.92" S
115 degrees, 47'10.94" E - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's most likely not a permanent structure, since the Google maps image doesn't show it (unless it was taken down). I'd say that means either A) it's an easter egg from Google, or B) it's monketman's balloon car from Top Gear. I hope it's the second one.
I hope there's a follow up story where we get the real answer. Does Google Earth include the data to let you know when the image was captured? - mahler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Like somebody said earlier: "It looks like a sign with a shadow to me..."
It's right next to the entrance of a parking lot, which is where you'd want a sign to be.
no digg - netwookiee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Chuck Norris sleeps with a night light. Not because he is afraid of the dark, but because the dark is afraid of Chuck Norris.
- roosterjm2k2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wrong reply button...
- puffinfresh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow. I'm from Perth. Fancy seeing something about Perth on Digg's front page. Anyway, It looks to me like a water tank, not a flying car.
- manatee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Maybe it is a car up on a post... you know, kind of like a billboard
- davidwg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0you can see the hairline image supports, for whatever the object is, on the right
- bossm4n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Flying car or not, the driver's an idiot or drunk because he's headed right for that group of trees.
- sgtkillmore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hahah awesome
CHUCK NORRIS - timewarrior, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0

Its just so low res so you cant really see the details. - Apreche, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Obviously a car with a black cover on it next to a white car. Or a photoshop. Goddamn people are so gullible.
- link_36p, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0 For all those who think its a bus stop either ur really stupid for saying that, or the person who made the bus stop is really stupid for puting it at a angle compared to the road.
