- sarasweet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm not stoked on the yahoo thing, but I love Flickr. As long as it doesn't dramatically change I'll stay a member. And why does everybody keep calling it a free service? Free? It ain't free, I paid $40 for a pro membership back in the day. Those memberships are now like $20 or something, but still, people cherish their Flickr identities and don't want to be tied with Yahoo if they don't have to. It's those of us who have been with Flickr and have seen it grow that don't want it to become this "yahoo photos" thing.
- antoniojvr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone know any good alternatives?
- DigitalKNK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They already have stated that your pictures will be your pictures and they do not plan on changing that.
Jedinate: If you read the Flickr Blog you will see they have answered some of the questions that concern people, one of them being the name thing. It clearly states you will still keep your Flickr name just login into Flickr you will use your yahooID and it will not change your Flickr name. - Rndm_Tngnt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's not just about having to create a yahooID, it's about people being afraid of what yahoo will do next. Like when they bought out geocities and claimed ownership of everything their users had created.
Not to mention the fact that some people did, in fact, pay for their Flickr pro accounts. It's an unjustifiable hassle and hints at further integration with yahoo's portal which the users of Flickr are not too keen on. - outbreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.shutterbook.com
- divideby0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Check this post on the flickr blog. Nothing to worry about as far as your ownership of photos, it seems.

FWIW I love flickr and bought a pro account. Once you get what they're trying to do and actually use the services they provide you'll love it too. - dhughes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes Rndm Tngnt I'd say that's the biggest worry, the threat of Yahoo claiming copyright on all photos on Flickr.
- MorrowLess, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Been happily using textamerica.com way before I'd ever heard about flickr.
I've tried signing up for flickr about 5 times and have yet to receive their confirmation emails...finally gave up. - fu_fish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm not going to cancel unless the service suffers. I love flickr, I have a Yahoo! ID, I don't see the big deal. I'd rather have one ID for all the services than one for each service.
- dhughes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 I think people are worried Yahoo will get greedy when they see how popular it is and soon it won't be free. Or it will be like Hotmail, free and nice to use (not check your mail every 30 days or have it suspended), then it was taken over by MS and restricted and went to hell.
It sucks that it left Canada along with all the jobs. - DigitalKNK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0knid ... your not looking hard enough most of the images on there have bigger sizes you have to click on the "all sizes" above the image. If you click on the "all sizes" link you will not see hose "tiny boxes". The tiny boxes are just notes that the author or group has added to give the picutre more info.
- jonknee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What were the benefits of Yahoo taking over Flickr: cheaper, more storage, runs faster, you know your images won't be lost, etc, etc. In exchange you have to sign up for a Yahoo ID sometime within the next year. Not a real big deal, what other Yahoo service is out there where you don't have to sign up for a Y id? I had one back from like 2000.
- lego, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Four hundred members will lose the ability to easily publish their pictures online. For everyone else, life will go on as usual.
- zeropointD, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I would like to personally slap the person who started this. What a over-reacting baby.
- antoniojvr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I bet you if Google was buying flikr, everybody would be singing praises...
- senzafine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0tech_junkie, Not quite sure exactly what you meant by "what you get". The two services have similarities but are two completely different beasts. They each let you share photos but beyond that FotoFlix is more of a premium service where Flickr pretty much offers what most other photo sharing sites offer.
- linuxbox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yahoo's site looks like *****.
- VladDrac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0next, it's not the difficulty, it's the embarrassment.
- AKAImBatman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0> Anyone know any good alternatives?
Image Shack[1] is very popular. I don't know if it really is the same as Flickr's psuedo "photo blog" service, but it does allow you to publicly share images.
Personally, I've used Flickr in conjunction with my blog[2], since Blogger.com traditionally hasn't offered the ability to upload images. I thought it was strange when Blogger recently added this feature after explicitly ignoring it for all these years. Now I know why. :-/

[2] http://akaimbatman.blogspot.com - nmber3pencil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0400 members...do you think Flickr is even going to care? More power to them, less bandwidth and less waste of money on their part.
- DigitalKNK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am with fu_fish ... having one login makes things easier. Flickr's service wont be affected by making that happen it will just make things a bit annoying for a few weeks but who cares the service still is great worth every penny ... free or pay.
- ebob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0These mass cancellations seem to work only rarely (if at all). Earlier this year, Meetup.com started charging a $20/month group fee. People defected in droves, but Meetup.com is standing firm on the fee. As far as this Flick Off mass defection is concerned, I can't see this succeeding due to the fact that Yahoo! is not charging a fee and if people are concerned about their privacy, they can just create a Yahoo! account with false information. Switching to a different photo sharing service may be more trouble than it's worth.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0they take over xfire with a lawsuit now this
- riffst3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is so lame. dugg.
- jedinate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have no problem having to create a Yahoo account to use my Flickr, my only problem is that I already have a Yahoo account (jedinate72) which I am forced to use, which is different from my Flickr account (jedinate) because someone has chosen "jedinate" on yahoo. If I am forced to consolidate I should be given sole use of the user name -jedinate- , since I am willing to use it for multiple accounts and already have it for about 10 other on line accounts.
- fugitivALiEN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What a waste of a complaint... Can someone explain to me what the fuss actually is?
- thecommish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0www.smugmug.com
is the best alternative in my opinion. Great tools and very easy to use. - shakefu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is another "open" alternative to Flickr. Currently in beta but looks to be really cool.
http://www.23hq.com/ - siouxmoux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am glad to see i am not the only one who have issue with flickr. This service sux.
- kungfustickman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why would I want a Yahoo ID? I believe Yahoo is making a big mistake. They should keep the dual citizenship for all those loyal flickr users.
- Tech_Junkie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Flickr to fotoflix NO comparison Flickr wins hands down. Just compare the pricing of each and what you get, that says it all!
- Tech_Junkie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I say people GET OVER IT. Get the damn yahoo login. You know that there is not a good alternative that's why Yahoo bought the because they are the largest service. If you don't like "The Man" LEAVE! Yahoo owns them and 400 users is nothing to the amount of people that actually use the service. I say like it or leave it. That is life.
- ShadowRider, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What a bunch of *****, they should be glad that Yahoo is buying the service so that they can rest easy knowing their thousands of amateur photos of their mundane life doesn't just disappear.
- kbspn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.fotoflix.com/
- numike, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0i do not the tagging stuff at all
- 70ny, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I like Yahoo. I have digg on My Yahoo. I don't see what's so bad about it.
- slartibartphast, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0In other news, the group plans to complain about the size of free ketchup packets and the roughness of toilet paper in public bathrooms. Zoiks.
- Red_Eye, on 10/12/2007, -1/+01-800-wah-effing wah. Get over it. They are trying to cut cost to keep your service free. By cutting back to one autehtication system among other things they will limit the bandwidth consumed which unlike you Yahoo /Flikr pays for by the megabyte. Have your protest, if you succeed you will likely accelerate the need to charge for the service. WTG!
- kidlinux, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Sounds like a bunch of whining.
So they have to sign up for a Yahoo! account; what's the big deal? - kajoob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0 next:
No, Vlad actually spends all his time trying to be cool on the internet and has no time left over to create a yahoo ID. - phugger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0FLICK OFF - I love it. This reminds me of the old Gene Shepherd radio show. One of the characters was named Flick. "Flick Lives!" was seen in graffiti all over the place. One of the old stories was how some high school students spelled it out with cars in the school parking lot. They got the L and the I a bit to close together........... (c8
PCH - ntufar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1good riddance
- cool4u2view, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0It wasn't in the article but those user also bought brand new Nikes and are planning to hitch a ride on the nearest comet. They were also seen passing around red kool-aid...
- next, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0VladDrac: Is it really that difficult to make a Yahoo email account? It takes a whole 2 minutes.
- VladDrac, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I thought these guys were being petty, you get what you paid for guys. But then I noticed that they are being compelled to create a Yahoo ID. Heck, that'd probably make me want to kill myself in the real world. So I can certainly understand their predicament. As far as I'm concerned, a yahoo ID is probably more moronic than an AOL ID.
- swankboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0If Google owned Flickr people would be falling all over themselves to use it. I still love Google search, but Google getting their hands into EVERYTHING and everyone lapping it up is getting really really old. Anyone else like Yahoo gets there hands on something and it's the end of the world as we know it.
Hell this makes me want to use Flickr more because I don't have a Flickr account and if now I can just use my Yahoo ID and don't have to setup a yet another site profile I'm all for that. - stingthebee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0who really cares? it's still free.
- gilsmethod, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1It's going to remain a free service, what's the fuss, you don't like go somewhere else. I dislike it when people complain about something they get for free!
- mutant, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0some asshats have nothing better to do than complain.
- bleutuna, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1WAHHH WAHHH WAHHH!
it's an ONLINE identity> you've still got your functionality, you can still display your silly made-up names! You just have to sign IN with a YahooID. What's the deal? Please, for the love of Christ.
Having to create a YahooID isn't really moronic - Yahoo Mail, Konfabulator, Launchast, and numerous other services already use YahooID. One ID for all of the Services Yahoo gives you for FREE! Wait, rewind, say it again - FOR FREE.
Big price to pay for a free service, having to create an online ID. -
