* 6 = Major NT OS version number (Windows 7, as the Softies have said, is built on the Windows Vista kernel, which they call NT Version 6)
* 1 = Minor version number
* 7000 = Major build number
* 0 = Minor build number (if needed; otherwise omitted on most builds)
* 081212-1400 = Build date stamp (08 = year, 12 = month, 12 = day, 1400= 2 p.m. using a 24-hour- format time stamp) - twiztidsinz, on 12/28/2008, -43/+324I HAEV NOT UESD IT YET BUT I NO IT SUX CUZ ITZ WINDOWZ!!!LOLOL!!11!!1

Are they ***** serious? - mikeophile, on 12/28/2008, -4/+179That's a pretty default background on the install. What do they call that, the Blue Screen of Life?
- mphree, on 12/28/2008, -17/+132I would just like to say....
If you don't know what you're talking about, please stop ***** commenting. I'm sick of reading ***** like this... "Windows 7 = Vista with all the ***** turned of"
I have an idea for a new feature on Digg. A basic intelligence test. Like Gmail Goggles, but with simple tech questions. "What is 127.0.0.1?" If you get it wrong, no comments. - 01001001, on 12/28/2008, -5/+113And is a screenshot like this really necessary?

Just exactly what the ***** is the point of that? Am I supposed to get a hard-on now? - jayeiser, on 12/28/2008, -10/+118127.0.0.1 is clearly where you spend most of your time, mad at the world because you can't get laid.
- tinkafoo, on 12/28/2008, -10/+1012009 will be the year of your mom on my desktop.
- mason092, on 12/28/2008, -11/+100You're gonna have to be more specific with that one...
- twiztidsinz, on 12/28/2008, -4/+901992~2xxx+ will be the year of windows on the desktop.
- stoanhart, on 12/27/2008, -3/+82I think so. Better let others come out first, just to be sure.
- LMN8R, on 12/28/2008, -3/+801) Superbar
2) Aero Peek
3) Aero Snaps
4) Jump Lists
5) Vastly improved Explorer organization
6) Out-of-box support for DivX, Xvid, and most other formats out there
7) HomeGroups
8) Improved performance (though games in Vista already perform as fast as XP, if not faster)
9) Device Stage
10) Pick your Enterprise feature - DirectAccess or unified projection - geoboy, on 12/28/2008, -4/+71But year 3000 will belong to the Linux desktop!
- delhokie, on 12/28/2008, -1/+59I think MS and Apple both seem to be aiming in the right direction this time-- don't focus on a bunch of new features, just make the thing work as planned/advertised. That's the 'killer feature' - just make it work.
- Nouman6, on 12/28/2008, -8/+60The 10 features they removed from vista?
just for the record, I use vista without any hassle - failtrain, on 12/28/2008, -11/+62I always thought macs had spellcheck... I guess not.
- dechah, on 12/28/2008, -6/+54I have been using it all day today and I am loving it. All my hardware is working with it, as are the apps I want. I am liking the new GUI features, and it is faster to boot on my hardware. Large file transfers across local hard disks and across the network are improved significantly as well. So all in all I am very happy with it. I have only found one minor glitch in the "Devices and Printers" feature.
- stockjones, on 12/28/2008, -0/+46Thats why its called a beta.
- Evocati, on 12/28/2008, -1/+41This is of no relevance what so ever, but I just now noticed macs backwards is scam.
- Octanum, on 12/28/2008, -0/+39THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING!
- jvincent08, on 12/28/2008, -7/+46Then don't.
Seriously, I like Linux too and I use it on my desktop on a daily basis, but there's no ***** reason in going in Windows posts just to troll. Shut the ***** up. - iDiggIt42, on 12/28/2008, -2/+41Hear that wooshing noise? That's the joke going over your head. Way over.
- greenlight2001, on 12/28/2008, -3/+40mphree = douche
- rpieszak, on 12/28/2008, -2/+35I did.
Wait.. am I the only one?
*****. - e2superman, on 12/28/2008, -4/+36Seriously you would dnot change over the task bar?
- or3n, on 12/28/2008, -0/+29Actually Numbski it means that 7 is to Vista what XP was to 2000: building upon a solid foundation but focusing on improving the user experience.
- peters1023, on 12/28/2008, -0/+29Thought we wanted performance..... now we want fishes.
Ok, now I are up to speed. - jayeiser, on 12/28/2008, -3/+32<<I have a girlfriend and get laid quite often. However, thank you for the concern, you ***** *****.>>
Does she live in your parents basement with you? - jmantra, on 12/28/2008, -10/+39Am I the only one the notices the striking resemblance to KDE?
- eatasandwich, on 12/28/2008, -2/+31Am I the only one ironing a cell phone?
- Jiuzton, on 12/28/2008, -5/+33It would be awesome and i would be very impressed if the fish in the background could swim around.
- coheedcollapse, on 12/28/2008, -2/+30You obviously didn't read the article. The guy says that it's so complete that most people would be satisfied with it as a full release. Very few if any obvious bugs.
- Linake, on 12/28/2008, -0/+25are*
- mohsenxp, on 12/28/2008, -4/+29There's no place like 127.0.0.1 :P
Anyway, I think the idea of a geek-only website is stupid. Where will the geek-to-be's come to learn if you kick them all out? - RobotCitizen, on 12/28/2008, -0/+25I want fishes that perform.
- HelplessSEAL, on 12/28/2008, -4/+28Please wait until you actually try the product before ripping into it like it's a lazy employee. Thank you.
- inactive, on 12/28/2008, -0/+24windows dreamscene
- SkilledPrestO, on 12/28/2008, -1/+24There isn't really any new information here...just some screenshots, which I don't think really does us any good. The only difference from Vista from a visual standpoint is the ribbon theme. I think the performance benefits is what most are looking forward to in 7, but you can't really capture that with this article. Looks a lot like Vista just by looking at it.
- gcnaddict, on 12/28/2008, -6/+28The 6.1 issue was discussed in-depth in the past: http://www.aeroxp.org/2008/10/introducing-windows- ...
(and no, I don't think it's an appropriate resolution, but whatever)
As for the build number, yeah. They tend to target specific numbers for certain milestones. 6999 was recompiled over and over again for this branch until they got a build stable enough for a final compile to 7000, while the RC1 branch went past 7000 in early December.
So... what's the problem? - e2superman, on 12/28/2008, -31/+52I love how Apple people always make excuses for Apple when they are missing anything. Like, "copy and paste will be in the 'Next' Update...". Or, "They are just keeping the OS 'Simple'".
When an MS OS is missing something they just plain rip into MS. - iizh, on 12/28/2008, -1/+22Holy *****. Macs. Scam. It all makes sense now!
- FKnight, on 12/28/2008, -3/+24Wow!! Something KDE copied from looks like KDE!
- deadbaby, on 12/28/2008, -7/+27Sure but can you answer me this question?
What are the 10 best features of Windows 7 over Vista? - DeadPlasmaCell, on 12/28/2008, -5/+24@ xxdesmus
Wow.. just.. wow. - twiztidsinz, on 12/28/2008, -11/+29Eww... ***** macs.
A friend of the family bought one and I was called to do tech support (bringing their data from Windows to the mac) and I felt dirty after using it. - bobmcsmith, on 12/28/2008, -1/+18Windows 7 runs version 6.1 of the Windows Kernel. This is because it is, in fact, only a minor update to the kernel. A lot of software checks the Kernel's major version number (first digit) to determine if it can run on a particular system. So, by not changing the major version number, Microsoft is implying that there are no breaking changes in the Kernel, and that software built to run against the 6.0 version (Vista) will run on the 6.1 version.
Besides, why should users care what the specific version number of the OS is? "Windows 7" is just the _NAME_ of the new OS, not necessarily the version number (after all, there have been many more than 7 releases of the Windows OS). Windows 7 contains version 6.1 of the Windows NT kernel, hence the version number. But as a user, that doesn't matter... "Windows 7" is just a name that marketing decided to give to the OS. - KibibyteBrain, on 12/28/2008, -4/+21But why read the article and absorb facts when we can just have fun taking wit-less pot-shots at Microsoft?
