- addisonj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+73more like destroy myspace, which would really make the world a better place
- eim9, on 10/12/2007, -1/+53Soon you'll be surfing the Google, not the internet.
- Dog_Paddle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+36Google... is taking over the internet
I can't wait until they become the only net neutral ISP. - rkettner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24Fortunately enough for Yahoo... Google never had a shot at outbidding them on Broadcast.com... where would Yahoo be without that 5 billion dollar redirector?
- AussiePhil, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Bah... Methinks Google should learn to be more Froogal.
- cryonox, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25Then microsoft? make the world a better place? well jus a thought
- DrSkrud, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17As long as they don't turn Facebook into Orkut, I'll be happy.
- MrSolutions, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Hehe - They already outbid Yahoo on YouTube and Now it could be FaceBook too.
This could really be trouble for Yahoo who are struggling to keep up in the community driven sites and online video sites. - MalDON, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17I kinda already do!
- ICSU, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Don't forget billions wasted on geocities.
- ThisIsBob, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20Gooface?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Why would Google spend almost 50% more on Facebook than they did on YouTube when Facebook gets less than one tenth of the traffic? And why bid 130% more than Yahoo!? It makes no sense, especially with Google trying to refocus its efforts on the core search engine.
- MalDON, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Don't tell me, you think facebook is worse than myspace?
- macewan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10It's made of tube dumbass ;-)
- ArcticCelt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10"can't wait until they become the only net neutral ISP"
I hope so! In fact a couple of companies like Google should join in a conglomerate and create "Neutrality Network" or something like that. - tempusrob, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13"I shudder at the thought of a yahoo powered facebook...."
Why? They bought Flickr, and it continues to rock. I'm a big Google fan, but Yahoo! really doesn't get the credit it deserves ... - MeltedUFO, on 10/12/2007, -11/+21STOP BUYING THE INTERNET GOOGLE!
- squeevey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Those trends seem to be based out of Brazil and other countries, where Orkut is more popular. In the US facebook edged out orkut.
- kingace, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8There's actually a reason why we have Reply buttons.
- dbug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Indeed. The amounts of money paid for such sites is getting ridiculous and decadent. I really hope this backfires in some way or other.
- phearinc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Define traffic, I guess. YouTube is often embedded in other sites, eliminating much advertising possibility. Also, when people go to YouTube, they generally just click on the video, and that's it.
People probably spend more time looking at facebook page than a YouTube page. - MartinSJacobson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7http://checkout.google.com
- darkdaedra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Informative comment of the year.
- darkdaedra, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I'm in college and I can tell you the one thing that makes the facebook college crowd seem like a higher class crowd than the MySpace crowd is that facebook doesn't all them to ***** up the CSS on their page. Also, they don't allow users to post glittery pictures and, worst of all, ***** cursor trails and animated hearts falling down the screen.
Anyway, my point was that college students are, on the whole, pretty stupid and annoying. I highly doubt the demographic could get that much worse. - goob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@furto
I've got plenty of friends who live in Australia and who are on Facebook. Myspace isn't the only global site. - darkdaedra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm more a fan of FaceBoogle.
- pgup, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5$2.3 Billion is a lot to spend on a fad
- keane, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4actually, on events (parties) pages, Facebook already automatically links the address to Google Maps.
- esourcemag, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4everybody leeps talking about traffic. its not the traffic (for the most part) its the data and metadata that can be taken from the users, what they like, don't like, trends, fads, and so on. its about making better adverising, products and services in the future than having bought a site.
YouTube (and if they buy FaceBook) can fail in a few years and they will get their moneys worth if they can make sence of the data and turn it into information and knowledge.
In the end, I think Fox out Foxxed them all with MySPace... now if they only invest in taking the technology to another level... - itanshi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3they already opened it beyond the college crowd, what demographic?
- Escamillo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Google spends 0.9 billion for advertising rights on MySpace, then spends 2.3 billion on MySpace's main rival? I guess Google is trying to corner the whole web.
And MS just recently obtained exclusive advertising rights for FaceBook, so Google will have to honor that contract (meaning, FaceBook advertising revenue goes to MS, not Google), or they'll have to try to buy MS off (I doubt MS will settle for a small amount). - EGOvoruhk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Half the text on Wikipedia are already links (Albeit internal ones), that would just confuse the hell out of me
- ChuckNorris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Buying up a competitor just so a rival company can't isnt really new practice. It makes sense why Google would want to cut Yahoo off from the social internet sector...
- darkdaedra, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yeah, no one's heard of searching or e-mailing with Yahoo...
- stormof59, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2google is the new starbucks
- mrtrick, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Idno about this... what's next Wikipedia? Think of the adsense / adwords goldmine there!
- gregmo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I thought facebook signed a big contract with microsoft for advertising
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I didn't know what orkut was either, but i do have a Facebook account! ( ever since UCD emails became valid )
After reading the article from wikipedia, I don't find orkut that different from the other sites. I guess in Brazil it is huge, but not anywhere else.
Lastly, invite only? I forgot how I got a gmail invite, but it is more useful that orkut IMO. - EbowUK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3For the sake of all that is Google, my OP was a joke, a gag, an attempt at sarcasm.
Please stop googling this nonsense and go save a mouse from a plant. - keane, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Facebook is not only valuable because of advertising ($1mil+ a week); it is extremely valuable for the information users willingly provide (users provide more information on Facebook because of the privacy features / feeling of safety). Google is interested in organizing information and the folksonomy system is able to show current trends ("Pulse") which is likely worth billions if expanded and sold to marketers, etc.
- ub3rgeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i just played around with facebook for the first time... and it is wildly better then myspace (and i only created one out of peer pressure, i sign on once every 3 months)
I would accualy use this to keep track of people. much nice
uh ya.... - kingace, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Actually... that'd be kinda cool.
- tempusrob, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Oh, and ...
"I also like how Google steered clear of myspace."
Right, steered clear all the way to the bank: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/5254642.stm - phlux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Man, I have over 15 years in IT but i still chuckle every time I here things like:
"is the internet down"
"A new computer?!... Does it have the internet on it"
Now I can add this one to my odd little chuckle list - zestyhedgehog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orkut
- protez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Google on "how to stop Google taking over the world"
God, I unconsciously checked the result for myself... what a shame.. - SniperZero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why do people keep saying google should have got myspace :S... If google acually wanted myspace they would have gotten them already...
They aren't paying any price for not getting myspace they obviously just didn't want it. - zestyhedgehog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I remember an article in NY Times, saying that Yahoo! wants Gacebook for $700 million, but Facebook wants $2 billion. I don't see the point for Google to offer $300 million more, if they already knew what the price is.
- hanapbuhay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Orkut's big... in BRAZIL!
http://www.google.com/trends?q=orkut%2C+facebook%2C+friendster&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all - protez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is a new way to get diggs. Worked perfectly.
