- deezp1, on 10/21/2007, -8/+197Fantastic, every digg user needs to install this so there will be no more duped storys
- Hemingrubbish, on 10/21/2007, -4/+85@Hayaemsay then you shouldn't be commenting on a story about a firefox extension
- zeromancer, on 10/12/2007, -12/+59@halftw
Please place your tinfoil hat in the full upright position for takeoff - markr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32@Hayaemsay - this extension is not something you've paid for - and the API is open so you can write your own extension for opera...
- Sphonix, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26Yeah, cause that warning about similar (or exactly the same) url has stopped people from submitting dupes before, so this will prevent it :) A nice extension though, be useful for both casual and power submitters.
- mal1964, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23i will be able to see how many diggs i wont get
- AaronCompNetSys, on 10/29/2007, -3/+25So this extension sends every web page you ever visit to digg? Thats a bit of a security compromise. http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/7864 only checks when the referer is digg.
- Aidenag, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23Yeah this is very useful for the heavy digg user, all the way down to the occasional digger who doesnt maybe spend the time to make sure he isnt duping. Going to save lots of time and hassle.
Thing i found most interesting though was that the API loads all its data faster than most websites even can finish loading, so your never waiting on it.. Even when the webpage your loading is google! haha - Niten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Cool idea, but I really see this as a bit of a privacy issue. Not that I don't trust the guys at Digg or anything; I'm just a little uncomfortable with making a query to Digg's API for each and every web page that I visit.
- BuzzLightyear, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17So this extension tells Digg about every web page you visit.
This extension is a privacy nightmare!
One to avoid. - akira117, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14LOL.....
http://digg.com/tech_news/digg_stories_submitting_as_anonymous - Dycacian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Needs the ability to open the pages in a new tab. But still dugg.
- Egoist, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10That's the first thing that came to mind too. Every page that you visit (read: porn) will be sent to Digg, so they have a record of where every user who installs this goes 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I can live without this "convenience."
- Pushkin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Great idea, but did not work on
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/26/technology/26anderson.html?em&ex=1177732800&en=a8e329ab8c0d76ab&ei=5087%0A - Azimuth1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Am I missing something here? How will this cut down on dupes? You can't submit a URL that's already been submitted anyway. Dupes happen when two different sites cover the same story, hence two different URLs. This extension doesn't address that at all.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7We need an extension that detects lame stories.
Maybe one that blocks attempts to make lame comments as well?
This would be forcibly installed on certain Diggers' PCs.
Keywords: In Soviet Russia; Steve Jobs; HDR panorama; Web 2.0; Readyboost; Plasma Shield... - BloodJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@Grouser
That reference to neothoughts.com is the API key, which is required by the digg API. The extension never "calls home". - Fhwqhgads, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Ironically, this page has 0 diggs lol.
- lowerlogic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Works great. In the case of dupes though, does it display the diggs for the story with the highest number of diggs that link to your current page?
- dracostimpy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@aidenag
It must be lightning-quick because it sends every web site you ever visit to digg before it loads the actual website. Let me repeat that: IT SENDS EVERY WEBSITE YOU VISIT TO DIGG. Now, I'm not saying that Kevin's going to do evil things with that information, but do you really want digg to know that you're obsessed with midget porn? Yes, this extension sure is handy for compulsive diggers like myself, but until it's routed over the Tor network, screw it.
Kevin, since you dugg this, I think it behooves you to state clearly what digg's intentions are with this information, and to promise some level of anonymity/protection to digg users. Failure to do so will confirm that you are doing a Monty Burns impersonation at the prospect of harvesting such fertile data for nefarious purposes. - ggidster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6A nicely done extension which works well, but I uninstalled it when I read the comments regarding privacy (thanks for the heads-up on that chaps - I hadn't considered it). So, dugg for being interesting and good to see people experimenting with the API, but overall I don't think it's a good idea....
- MeltingIce, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Awesome extension, but how come the homepage digg.com has 66 diggs? O.o
- mapkinase, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Uninstalled. Thanks
- tomwhughes, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Brilliant everyone should start using this instantly. Hopefully we will see more of this creative goodness with the new Digg API
- abxy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3To those concerned about privacy and to the author of this extension, here's the solution: Update the add-on to have an "Always on" and a "Check if dugg button" option. That way the extension can either check every page you visit or just the ones you want to check.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@Hayaemsay
You're screwed. Deal with it. - Dycacian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Looks like a bug to me.
- akira117, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Yea your right, Digg directs you to the story though.
- dregin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's a pity you can't see the text on the button when using one of the darker firefox themes. Sounds like a great idea, though. Dugg :)
- wisam, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Digged the linked page using their own extension.
This makes looping easier (and confusing). Digg's home page has been digged 59 times. - tweeto, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4To do:
1. Open the 'submission form' in a new tab.
2. Copy the 'page title' to the 'submission title'. - krinthekuz, on 09/16/2008, -0/+2detecting whether a story is lame is rather difficult bc it's so subjective. i just want an extension that will stab people in the face with a rusty icepick over the internet.
- Grouser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2While this application is no doubt useful, has anyone looked at the code? Smartdiggbutton.xpi is a zip file containing, among other things, smartdiggbutton.jar, also a zip file, which contains overlay.js, which contains the following:
makeRequest('http://services.digg.com/stories?count=1
&appkey=http%3A%2F%2Fneothoughts.com&link=' + escape(url), '');
It looks like this app is calling home each time you use it. Or am I wrong? - darlyn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I know other people have said this here already, but whatever: Digg's home page has been dugg 79 times!
- estacado, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Great idea, but it checks every page you go to. Bad if you're on a slow connection, negligible if you're on broadband. I'd be great if there's an easy way to switch the button on/off, so that you can turn it on only when you're wondering if the page has been dugg or not.
- insub2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My vote is it's better.
With Digg Me Latter, you get that green box at the top of the page and the only option is to "digg it" or close.
With this, it sits nicely at the bottom of firefox and shows the diggs on any page you visit. If you are at a page you'd like to digg or view comments about, when you click the Smart Digg Button it brings you to the digg page for that story. (Once there you'll have can digg it.) - unsolicited, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would not recommend if you have a slow Internet connection.
- BloodJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The two should load asynchronously.
- onebit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You only submit a small percentage of pages you visit to Digg. This extension checks every page you visit so it wastes server resources. It's better for Digg to use the "dumb" button.
- quotato, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1API could be the acronym: A Privacy Issue
- dimplemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1not enough people are installing this extension. I'm already seeing too many dupes, this will decrease the dupes! This should be a mandatory installation for every digg user.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1when i click the digg button, how do i make it open in a new tab? can i edit the xpi and make it do this?
- baseballpm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love this...too bad some of our stupid web based applications only work with IE 6, not even 7...and not with Firefox
- abxy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1good question.
- aidenbordner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Word! Makes me want to start playing with the API.
- GopherGod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks like it doesn't cut off query strings
- christopheles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1All glory to the digg API! So many fun things to look forward to.
- dimplemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This extension is da'bomb, but I do wonder, does my page load and then it checks to see if it was dugg or does it check first and load the page?
By the way, why has no one dugg this page, yet? lol. - uceboyx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Uh... Why does the button even appears on this page!?
- inactive, on 08/01/2008, -0/+1but it doesn't work with firefox 3

What is Digg?
The Digg Toolbar for Firefox lets you Digg, submit content, and keep track of Digg even when you're not on the Digg site. Download the official
