Firefox 2.0, Promoted on Google Homepage
googlesystem.blogspot.com — Google homepage showed for a brief period a link to Firefox 2.0 "optimized for Google", that is bundled with Google Toolbar. It's not the first time when Google recommends Firefox on the homepage (here's another screenshot), but this time Google is more pushy.

- pwill, on 10/12/2007, -18/+13GTFO my Digg.
Users need to be aware of software options, but giant banners are not the way to do it; the same way giant banners are not the way to sell Viagra, or sex hotlines. - ImTheDarkcyde, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3man, all you firefox pricks need to use opera
kidding of course, but i do reccomend it. thirstyferret (lower in the comments) mentions that 'us Firefox folks have to do a bit more promoting'
imagine how hard us opera folk have to work - Spanktacular, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10You have to admit, selling Viagra and sex hotlines via big banners is much better than when they used to offer them as free prizes in chocolate cereals...
- sameerb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Even without all these promotions firefox has captured more than half of the market share of Digg users.

- homestar14, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29In response to Yahoo's IE7 message, most likely.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Not really.. Google was doing it before Yahoo..
edit: i thought you were talking about the message on Yahoo's front page that recommends Firefox if you're using IE6.. i guess they promote IE7 now. - brandizzle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Eh...I think it's mostly because Google wants people to use Google search. And guess what's in the search bar of FF? Google!
Not many people visit Google AND Yahoo, and after downloading IE from Yahoo they'll download FF from Google.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Not really.. Google was doing it before Yahoo..
- bonkers1, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Yes! We need big players to promote like this :D Great news, as I did not notice sense I am redirected to .ca
- wafflez, on 10/12/2007, -20/+7why is this such a big deal >_>...lol but anyways, in response to joltjake, what specifically makes us 'pricks'? i use ie7 because it works with all the keys and gestures on my laptop...jesus i'm sick of you fanboys.
- ThirstyFerret, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23Everybody to their own, Wafflez.
It's just that us Firefox folks have to do a bit more promoting, as Microsoft is ramming IE down everyone's throats... - gconeen, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13why is it a big deal? Because the biggest company on the internets is siding with Mozilla! Not microsoft, Mozilla!
- oriondr, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4Yeah, Microsoft sure is jamming IE down people's throat by including a browser with their operating system.
[/sarcasm]
Seriously, folks. The only throat jamming being done here is by Firefox fanboys who refuse to sit idly by and let people *gasp* use Internet explorer! - ElMoselYEE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2so where do you dismiss the fact that including the browser with an OS as throat jamming? you completely ignored the argument and just made a new one. if including the browser with the OS isn't "throat jamming" enough for you, how about the fact that you can't uninstall it.
if everyone used yahoo and i found that Google is badass...I'd promote it as well. only with google, the fanboys don't have to do much convincing, because people made the transition naturally. for some reason, IE users are not making that move...so we must promote the software we feel is better.
throat jamming? hardly. helpin a brother out? ya. - oriondr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No, including software with the OS which you CAN remove (look in add/remove components) is not 'throat jamming'.
I have heard about Firefox, I've used Firefox, I prefer IE: It opens faster, uses up less memory, doesn't use tabbed browsing (which for my purposes is a plus), so I don't need it crammed down my throat any further.
Unfortunately, browsers are so trivial they aren't even worth arguing about. What is worth arguing about is the fact that firefox fanboys are rabid and irritating. This step by Google is even more irritating. Remember when google was just a search engine?
- ThirstyFerret, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23Everybody to their own, Wafflez.
- eisdell, on 10/12/2007, -13/+6Both Internet Explorer and Firefox are great products. I personally prefer Firefox for reading type (the zoom is great) and IE for media. Why do people have to HATE one because they LOVE the other?
- TenebrousX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13for something to argue about. It's the same with OS's, cars, apples, oranges, etc
- RojoKayako, on 10/12/2007, -24/+2IE 7 is better than Firefox.
- Mooinakan, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22Firefox is better than IE7, which is marginally better than cancer.
- RojoKayako, on 10/12/2007, -15/+0No...IE7 is better than Firefox. It's faster. It runs thinner (FireFox seriously BLOATED). And...it doesn't cause memory leaks or plant spyware on your PC.
- skymt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"No...IE7 is better than Firefox. It's faster. It runs thinner (FireFox seriously BLOATED). And...it doesn't cause memory leaks or plant spyware on your PC."
Spyware? Oh, I'd just *love* to hear this one... - mrkmrk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"No...IE7 is better than Firefox. It's faster. It runs thinner (FireFox seriously BLOATED). And...it doesn't cause memory leaks or plant spyware on your PC."
Let me just be the first to say:
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. - pushmouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7RojoKayako is simply trolling...or he's an idiot...or both.
- RojoKayako, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0Do you Fanboys feel better now? Do you feel that you are brothers in an International Community dedicated to open/free software...or some such post-marxist drival? Do you feel part of something "Bigger than Yourselves"?
Most important...are you up for more unpaid schilling for FireFox today? - adragons, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7"No...IE7 is better than Firefox."
No!
"It's faster. "
Only marginally in some areas (like cold start)
"It runs thinner (FireFox seriously BLOATED)."
Download is only 5.6megs
"And...it doesn't cause memory leaks or plant spyware on your PC."
um.... IE is the MOST vulnerable browser.
- TheSevenDuffs, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3I think that message only shows for people using older versions of firefox.
- 4DFX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Why the fuss? And why is everyone acting like concurrence is a bad thing? It's not like promoting a browser is a crime.
I see it like this: Google is using its search engine monopoly to promote Firefox, while Microsoft is using its OS monopoly to "push" IE to their users. So, fighting monopoly with monopoly may not sound like the best thing to do, but It's probably the most efficient method. - t3hSmartKid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7That's great. FF can use the help.
As for the IE7/FF debate, I prefer FF cuz its open source. I realize IE7 has many similar features now with its own extensions and such, but with open source everything is generally newer due to updates more often.- Th3P4st, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"but with open source everything is generally newer due to updates more often."
Ummm... Lets see:
Firefox 1 was released in 2004
Firefox 1.5 in 2005
Firefox 2 in 2006
Opera 7 was released in 2003
Opera 7.5 in 2004
Opera 8 in 2005
Opera 8.5 in 2005
Opera 9 in 2006
As for patching security gaps Opera have been very fast on the few rare occasions when a security issue have become known. Opera also was way ahead of Firefox in passing the acid2 test.
That something is open source is no way a guarantee that it is of good quality likewise that something is closed source does not mean that by default it's the opposite.
What makes good software from an end users perspective have in most cases very, very little if nothing to do with whether it is closed or open source.
- Th3P4st, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"but with open source everything is generally newer due to updates more often."
- Cymrubeats, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3One reason i would like to see FF pushed more and more has nothing to do with infantile allegiances. The more FF users, the more sites will cater for FF (i really don't like having to switch from one browser to another just to do online banking or whatever else), and the more sites that cater for FF, the more likely MS are to pull the finger out and REALLY overhaul I.E. I don't want to see either 'lose', but i sure as heck want to see genuine choice and not a need to have both.
- SicKn3sS, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2What a lame story... Who gives a *****?
- RojoKayako, on 10/12/2007, -8/+0FireFox Fanboys with no life "...give a *****".
- Tyseyh, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8if you like FF then good for you
If you like IE.. Good for you
Why cant people just accept the someone likes something else that they don't?
Sound like a bunch of kids fighting over whats better, chips or waffles(Ah the good ol' days)- Lutz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Because Internet Explorer has made web designers life a living hell for some time now. We don't hate Internet explorer because it's Microsoft or something like that, we hate it because it ruins the web.
Arguments like Firefox vs Opera is on the other hand like a bunch of kids fighting over waffles. - MrPig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Firefox, Opera, anything with a decent render engine - doesn't make a difference to me as long as I don't need to deal with crappy CSS hacks and non-transparent png's in IE.
- Richggs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It doesnt seem to apear to come up if your using Opera, so i suppose thats what there after... I guess they just chose FF because its an easer switch from IE to MSFF or should that be GFF now... :)
- Lutz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Because Internet Explorer has made web designers life a living hell for some time now. We don't hate Internet explorer because it's Microsoft or something like that, we hate it because it ruins the web.
- markdr123, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Seems a bit pushy to me.
(I do use Firefox btw) - MaZa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4
Isn't IE7 just a complete rip off on FF and opera anyway? Microsoft never does anything original AND rams ***** down peoples throats.... hence why I chose an open source browser that is ORIGINAL and works ***** great.
Being able to develop your own extensions. Now that just ***** owns. - RojoKayako, on 10/12/2007, -7/+0What about FireFox and Spyware? I haven't seen any FireFox Fanboy brave enough to adress this!
- markdr123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Firefox, boy. Firefox!!
- Tetraca, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I am personally sick of this browser propaganda with Firefox in particular(Just how many sites are there committed or partially committed to spread firefox in relation to the other 2 major browsers?).
- kaos1409, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Because there is no issue with Firefox and spyware. The only time I ever had issues with spyware was when I used IE for all my browsing. Firefox made it a non-issue.
- RojoKayako, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0What....no issue with FireFox and Spyware? Sure (wink, wink)
Seriously, between all the Bloatware, Crashes, Hang-ups, Memory Leaks, Inability to interpret standard pages, slow start-up, etc..., I've about lost most confidence in Firefox.
Of course, the obsessed Microsoft Haters - the FireFox Fanboys - will schill this FireFox until thier last breath - and they do it for free! Amazing how many free coolies there are out there: people willing to do any amount of work just becasue they want ".....to feel they are a part of something bigger than themselves".
- RojoKayako, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0What....no issue with FireFox and Spyware? Sure (wink, wink)
- pushmouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3RojoKayako. Inability to render standard pages? Firefox is more stands complaint than many modern browsers, certainly moreso than IE. Bloatware? name the bloat please. Theres also no more memory leaks in FF. The only reason IE launches marginally faster is because its always running. Even when you close it its still running.
- techpimp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I love firefox, but Opera is the most compliant browser.
- pushmouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2techpimp, yes. very true.
- freddo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3On a side note, it would very positive if the adds for Firefox were displayed while people are googling for "remove WGA", "upgrade IE7 HOWTO", "patch LegitCheckControl.DLL", "muBlinder", "valid winxp sp2 serials"....
