File Sharing Site Offers 250GB Storage Free to Diggers
noozeez.com — This story is geared towards Diggers and I just signed up for it and liked the interface, and the ability to make files either private or public and send someone a download link rather than emailing a big file. 250GB free online storage...wow.

site worked great despite getting hammered good..- dandonia, on 04/28/2008, -0/+4dont be too shocked if when you download a file back in like a month if you bring with it something nasty or if you store something on there and they charge you to get it back - something like that. Also dont be uploading anything like pireted material though this should go without saying. And dont use a password that you have used for anything.
- MarkusGarvey, on 04/28/2008, -0/+2i agree...but for anonymous quick file/image sharing seems to work ok for now..i defiantly wouldn't put anything of value on it yet..

How awesomer can 250 GB of free storage be!!- andyboyd, on 04/27/2008, -0/+8How awesome can 250 GB of free storage be? .... That's a rhetorical question if ever I saw one ;)
- Impossis, on 04/28/2008, -0/+3I'd say about 250 GB worth of awesome
- Locke2053, on 04/28/2008, -5/+31It can be pretty terrible if you use it to backup anything sensitive. They aren't even using SSL!!
If you use this service, never upload anything other than Truecrypt files (http://truecrypt.org).
A video of how to use Truecrypt: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBGIQ7ZuuiU- YoctoYotta, on 04/28/2008, -2/+12I'm glad you provided that video how-to, I was a bit intimated by truecrypt the first time I tried it and their written documentation was kind of lacking . . .it's all much clearer now. Definitely recommended for first-timers or anyone curious about the product's features.

- tomi, on 04/28/2008, -1/+3Considering how this seems to be public [all it takes is for you to figure out the obvious link], you would be an idiot to upload any backups without encrypting first.
- zakatov, on 04/28/2008, -1/+3In OSX, you could simply make an encrypted disk image and upload that. Fast, easy and secure.

http://www.whois.net/whois_new.cgi?d=filedropper&t ...
It's registered to a residential address using namecheap. The site owner is using a free Gmail address. That, and no CAPTCHA, and no email verification, and the fax is listed as "+15555555555". All this makes me very suspicious. Just don't use a password that you've used before, or you might get owned before the 15th.- Daniel591992, on 04/28/2008, -2/+10crap. I used the same password as my digg and gmail accounts. Ugh....
- JoeSpaceTime, on 04/28/2008, -3/+4Aw no. Not the end of the world. Go change your passwords quick, dude.
- Daniel591992, on 04/28/2008, -0/+6You can't.
(and there's no way I'm changing the password on every single site i've registered). - KMye, on 04/28/2008, -0/+7You should probably be doing that about twice a year anyway....

- goldenratiophi, on 04/28/2008, -0/+4However, namecheap uses "WhoisGuard," so I doubt that information is accurate.
- Dohko_Xar, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1That if, my password ever gets sent to their servers, the page doesn't seem to want to load

The poor grammar ON THEIR HOMEPAGE and the fact it's like if you want this free account put in your paypal. Should have a special link for digg users that doesn't require paypal. Know what I mean? - manitoba98xp, on 04/28/2008, -0/+13Just to continue the rhyme scheme (Zip, rar, 7zip, tar):
You mean bzip. You mean ar. (For those who don't know, "ar" is an old Unix archival tool largely replaced by tar, but still available on most systems.)- pendrachken, on 04/28/2008, -0/+2don't forget .zoo either
- therealgt, on 04/28/2008, -0/+0You missed .arj and .par I believe. .far as well maybe? Or did I make that one up?
- manitoba98xp, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1Just to follow up on these (unnecessary, perhaps, but whatever…): ARJ doesn't rhyme with either "zip" or "rar". PAR actually is a neat archive format (it has PARity, hence the name). I've never heard of FAR as an archive format; all my searches turn up is FAR (File and ARchive) Manager, an old Norton Commander clone.

- pixelperfect, on 04/28/2008, -0/+5dd: bs: illegal numeric value (on Mac OS X) - is this a linux thing?
- TeacherOfHeroes, on 04/28/2008, -0/+5Yup, Linux (Ubuntu, specifically). For os x, you'll need to check your man page for dd (man dd) as to what kinds of params (like kB or MB) it accepts for the block size and count. I'd guess it doesn't like having the count specified as a megabyte, tbh it doesn't really make sense when you think about it.

Not to sound like an overly cautious doomsayer, but just be careful.- jmpeagle, on 04/27/2008, -1/+6the chance that anyone would be able to charge for this service in 30 years is negligible.
- darkamster07, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1your IP can't do a thing without your ISPs info on you, and you have to have court orders etc. to get that stuff.

- IxGLSxI, on 04/27/2008, -2/+21...wtf?
- tocsy, on 04/27/2008, -3/+57EXACTLY.
- zspeed78, on 04/27/2008, -4/+7Google does it by selling ads at full price because they own the advertising. And they already have massive server farms for other projects. Economy of scale helps them. These guys dont have that yet. And what does it take for google or anyone else to match these guys instantly? not very much.
- anonydigg, on 04/28/2008, -3/+3Google serves text. They probably upload under a megabyte before someone clicks an ad. These guys have to upload gigabytes before someone clicks and gives them even less money, since they don't own the ad network. So advertising would be a dead end. They will probably go the way of Rapidshare.
- CrudeDarkness, on 04/28/2008, -1/+9I just want to remind people that this is a limited time offer. it ends 15 may. They are clearly trying to become popular quickly by doing this and advertising themselves for digg and reddit. Most likely they are going to make the money latter on in their life.
- Buckiller, on 04/28/2008, -0/+3yep... ive been using dropboks.com but i will also use this to let other people get my files from now on.

edit: I appear to be late. - andyd273, on 04/28/2008, -0/+23I think they are hoping to give it away till May 15th, get lots of free publicity, then charge $10 a month for anyone that signs up after May 15th.
Yeah, they'll have a bunch of people mooching off of them till 2038, but not everyone that gets an account will use it, and hopefully the publicity will bring in a bunch of new users.
And if worse comes to worse, all they have to do is close down the site, reopen it under a new name, and charge money for it. Then they will know that their servers can handle the kind of load that digg et al can bring, and all us moochers will be gone.- rogersj3, on 04/28/2008, -0/+5As much as I wish this isn't true, I have to suspect that you are correct.
- CrudeDarkness, on 04/27/2008, -2/+46how do you think google makes money?
- saddor, on 04/27/2008, -1/+4nice service! I love it
- yuanzhoulu, on 04/28/2008, -0/+7guys encrypt your damn files before you upload them. seriously. who knows what's being done with the data, there may not be a free lunch here.
- sandeepg, on 04/27/2008, -2/+238There's gotta be a catch somewhere..
- prophetpimp, on 04/27/2008, -0/+68we make this a standard like rapidshare with our free account and then they get customer because of our word of mouth publicity. Rapidshare gives out gold account all the time in promotional effort.
- NecroDigg, on 04/27/2008, -0/+48They will probably steal all the mp3s and warez you upload.
- chungmaster, on 04/27/2008, -2/+45Yeah I think this is a trap. Especially since they are advertising towards the social networking crowd. Think about it. Who uses these sites? Teens do. Who is responsible for most of the piracy...? Also, Digg and Reddit seem to have a lot of pirates. In fact, I'm pretty sure everyone here has downloaded illegally. So why give free accounts to only these social networking sites?
- poiuytrewq44, on 04/27/2008, -0/+19I second this suspicion. This was my second thought after "omg kewl".
- pseudononymist, on 04/28/2008, -1/+7so um, don't store any illegal ***** on here. Do you even really need to? Bit torrent will always be as fast if not faster for getting movies. As for music, the RIAA can only get you if you share your music with other people, not just for having it.
- Zalyster, on 04/28/2008, -0/+6Well actually...
- mCanada, on 04/28/2008, -0/+2The RIAA needs next to dick to sue you. In some cases it's an IP and a Kazza username that may or may not be yours. That's like saying the killer was between four feet 10 and six foot eleven , aged 10 - 90, was white or African American and possibly male or female. Closed case - pay 5K at the door thxbye.
- NeoNightmareX, on 04/27/2008, -1/+38There is a catch. You can only upload 5gb per file.
/s- iofthestorm, on 04/27/2008, -1/+54*only*...
- pseudononymist, on 04/28/2008, -0/+12which is obviously a veiled attempt to get people off of fat32 file systems, since they can't handle files larger than 4gb. Conspiracy? I think so.
- gavin422, on 04/28/2008, -1/+30Yeah, I think this might be, like Ackbar says, a trap. There's no CAPTCHA, no email verification, it's registered to a residential address using Namecheap, and the fax is listed as "+15555555555". All this is a good reason to be very suspicious - even if they're not trying to harvest your email/password, they might just simply not know what they're doing.
- eoncire, on 04/28/2008, -1/+4Yeah, site is down. Cought the "digg effect".
- blen2r, on 04/28/2008, -0/+6well, we know that subscription money goes to jitenagrawal@yahoo.com, if we ever get ****ed we know who to look for

- Cloud7654, on 04/28/2008, -0/+4It would help if you could change the name of the files once you've uploaded them, but I haven't seen an option to do that yet.

- talonstriker, on 04/28/2008, -5/+3For sufficient space, we'll probably end up having to break into google's server farm. Even then, we'll need to compress our files.
- JoeSpaceTime, on 04/28/2008, -1/+8Alright, Captain Bandwagon.

- Vhaeos, on 04/27/2008, -8/+134I'm so amazed how easily people are falling for this. There are *tons* of services who do this entirely for free, the difference is that this service is saying that diggers/redditers are getting it free, and so it's making it to the top of both Reddit and Digg. Congrats to FileDropper for the smart marketing though.

- Mysk, on 04/28/2008, -0/+4I don't know why ZeDJS got some digs down. That's exactly what I was thinking. So what if they try to steal files? That's why you encrypt it before you upload them. If you don't want to use PGP then that's fine. Just use TrueCrypt, place the files into an encrypted volume, and upload said volume.

- andy78, on 04/28/2008, -2/+10I buy alot of domain names using gmail accounts for several reasons.
1) One cant have an email @filedropper.com until one registers and you cant register unless you put an email (like gmail)
2) I know I will have the gmail account in case one of my other emails attached to a domain expires.

- CrudeDarkness, on 04/27/2008, -2/+28goodbye megaupload.
- solidus636, on 04/27/2008, -0/+18I wonder if these guys are as careless as Megaupload though. I've NEVER had a file deleted from Megaupload...and most stuff I upload is copyrighted.
- viewofeverlast, on 04/28/2008, -0/+10Ditto for mediafire
- Astroseksy, on 04/28/2008, -1/+7Why don't you have a seat over there..?

- TypicalAfrican, on 04/27/2008, -43/+3Hey morons, ever heard of filefront.com? Been around for a year.
- carlosauresrex, on 04/27/2008, -1/+35hey douche, ever give the impression of being a contemptible elitist on digg?
- saxreturns, on 04/27/2008, -0/+34Generally, I find it helps, when trying to bring people around to your point of view, not to start with 'hey morons'.
- tomi, on 04/27/2008, -0/+14I'm sorry, but FileFront is just ***** terrible.
- Cloud7654, on 04/28/2008, -0/+3Who are you kidding? You're not sorry. ;)
- sirbeta, on 04/27/2008, -0/+6Filefront is unreliable. I've had several accounts deleted due to "inactivity" after not using them for 1 month. They say that they mail you and tell you to log in and do something because the account has been flagged for removal, but I've never received such notices. I still use filefront, but I wouldn't put anything up there I want to last for more than a week.
- TypicalAfrican, on 04/28/2008, -8/+0sawk a cawk, all my files are still there after two years
- BSDaemon, on 04/28/2008, -0/+5Moron.

- Pfkninenines, on 04/28/2008, -0/+4Hey moron, ever realize that it's been around for several years? If you want to stick there that's fine, but don't try getting anyone from Digg to go to that ***** site.
- UtopiaInTheSky, on 04/27/2008, -3/+26Advertisements on Digg?
- bizen, on 04/28/2008, -0/+5And a good one too! If they had purchased advertising space it would have been ignored or blocked.
- igob8a, on 04/28/2008, -0/+3At least it's better than those mac and pc ads that make it to the front page every time they're released.
- xodex, on 04/27/2008, -1/+138Love the sign up process, Username/Password/Email.
Done.- cyrix, on 04/27/2008, -1/+69You didn't see the fine print about first borns?
- solidus636, on 04/27/2008, -0/+33Oh *****.
- duffman5, on 04/28/2008, -1/+2No, that's hidden by Adblock Plus.
- Adam420, on 04/27/2008, -2/+4Yes obviously they are giving this away free to everyone
- freak3295, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1if you try and sign up normally theres alot more to do, i think it asks for your credit card details
- twiztidsinz, on 04/27/2008, -1/+1Normally? just go to the link... my friends signed up who dont even use Digg
- solidus636, on 04/27/2008, -1/+1@twistidsinz
He means when normally signing up for an account without going to the link. And of course anyone can sign up by going to the link...these guys really can't know if you are a digg user or not.
- freak3295, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1if you try and sign up normally theres alot more to do, i think it asks for your credit card details
- Hoogs, on 04/28/2008, -0/+4And the best part is they don't make you check your email to activate your account. I hate when sites do that...
- jbnumba1, on 04/28/2008, -0/+4Yeah, THAT'S the best part of getting 250GB free until 2038..
- imontoya, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1old skool FTW !
- cyrix, on 04/27/2008, -1/+69You didn't see the fine print about first borns?
- gr3yn3t, on 04/27/2008, -12/+6this is the future of storage.
- bingobongony, on 04/28/2008, -1/+8no...it isn't.
- Hypomyxolydian, on 04/27/2008, -6/+18Wow....is this the future of Digg and similar sites?? "Story" advertisements?
- sirbeta, on 04/27/2008, -0/+5They're giving you something for free that's pretty useful. Call it whatever you want but I'd rather these stories than an actual advertisement trying to sell me something.
- jmpeagle, on 04/27/2008, -0/+8yay...universal porn access from any computer...hopefully this site isn't blocked anywhere in my travels
- smumdax, on 04/28/2008, -0/+0Try HotSpot Shield for that....
- lazyfisherman, on 04/27/2008, -0/+2do they allow deep linking of files to other sites like photobucket? been looking for a free place to host some extra images and audio files..
- Bartboy919, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1I too would appreciate a site that enabled deep linking of audio files.
- lazyfisherman, on 04/28/2008, -0/+0yeah, I basically want like.. a youtube for cd quality+ mp3 (or ogg) audio... upload it and embed it... they worry about the storage and bandwidth
- NWVG, on 04/28/2008, -0/+6Some sites I've used that allow deep linking and are free include:
http://www.ReimagineMemories.com
http://www.photolava.com
http://www.supload.com (Kinda Slow Sometimes)- lazyfisherman, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1these look useful, thank you thank you thank you!!!

- Zemnexx, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1Took a little bit for the account to work, I guess Im just excited. Works 100%, this is really cool.
- fludgesickles, on 04/27/2008, -10/+1how r ppl getting fast upload speeds?
i have 5 MB upload but it's uploading at like 15 kilobites per second
25 GB will take me ages!!!- smartazz, on 04/27/2008, -1/+1That might be your ISPs limitation not the sites.
- al11588, on 04/28/2008, -0/+0Kaboom
- smartazz, on 04/27/2008, -1/+1That might be your ISPs limitation not the sites.
- sononame, on 04/27/2008, -0/+158I am uncomfortable with how easy that sign up was.
- indiancompanion, on 04/28/2008, -0/+10i know, there is so much crap that could go wrong, that on the off chance that you actually go to a good site that means well, you question it every step of the way.
- idigital, on 04/28/2008, -0/+6I'm uncomfortable how easy it is for them to harvest email addresses without a privacy policy...
- DracoFlameus, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1http://www.filedropper.com/privacy.php
Of course thats not much... but it's something... we will have to see how it turns out.

- Bartboy919, on 04/27/2008, -1/+18I love how its getting slammed right now
- cyrix, on 04/27/2008, -1/+15Yeah I noticed, that's what she said, a crawl in speed in a matter of minutes.
- DroppedGT, on 04/27/2008, -1/+1Purely awesome, excellent site.
- mark076h, on 04/27/2008, -1/+69im confused how is this for Diggers only? it seems like anyone can sign up?
- jmpeagle, on 04/27/2008, -3/+4where does it say Diggers only....geared towards doesn't mean only for diggers. It's for people who post lots of files and could be helpful as another way to mirror an object that has been taken down due to bandwidth usage
- erhanaltay, on 04/27/2008, -0/+38Any one CAN sign up.. its called advertising. By sayings its for Diggers only, it gets to the top of Digg aka tons of free customers...
- Ploppyplop, on 04/27/2008, -0/+17All paying nothing...
- JoeSpaceTime, on 04/27/2008, -1/+12They're lying to me already, and I've only known them for 30 seconds. Good job they haven't got my username, email address and password...
...no wait, they have.- Darksoul, on 04/28/2008, -0/+2Then don't ***** make your login name the same one you use on digg and your email samething for your password if you don't do this then you are asking to be account jacked. Not that hard to figure out.
- JoeSpaceTime, on 04/30/2008, -0/+0Pst. It's okay, I didn't. Don't worry. Shhhh. Secret.
- Darksoul, on 04/28/2008, -0/+2Then don't ***** make your login name the same one you use on digg and your email samething for your password if you don't do this then you are asking to be account jacked. Not that hard to figure out.

- JoeSpaceTime, on 04/28/2008, -2/+0Na, we'd know about it already if it was. Over 85% of CTU workers are diggers. True.
- ImPerial99, on 04/27/2008, -0/+3it just tells me i have invalid credentials after i create and try to sign in. any others with the same issue?
- JoeSpaceTime, on 04/27/2008, -0/+2Yup.
- ehal256, on 04/28/2008, -0/+0Try it again after a few minutes, the same thing happened to me.
- uhhNo, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1You're doing it wrong.
- JoeSpaceTime, on 04/27/2008, -0/+2Yup.
- Krumm, on 04/27/2008, -0/+17Someone write a script to scrape all front-page stories that have (PICS) in the title, upload all the jpg's & gif's to an account and post the link into the comments.
Everyone who came late to the party to discover a smoking server and lots of comments about something you haven't seen will thank you.- opinionation, on 04/28/2008, -0/+8great idea

You haven't thought this through man!- danielsamuels, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1PHP with RegEx would do it. Want me to give it a try?
- ginestony, on 04/27/2008, -0/+6seems cool. I give it just a couple days before they realize what a huge mistake that was to offer it to digg users... digg effect times 1000.
- noahgelman, on 04/27/2008, -2/+8thats not over 9000!!
- jerstud56, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1Well regardless of it being for Digg users or not, it's not like it checks if you are or not???
- WRSaunders, on 04/29/2008, -0/+0Right. The Digg offer is no longer available.
- xadious, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1Done!
Although i don't think it's going to stay around, rather it's going to disappear soon like all the other new upload sites. - knarfwei, on 04/27/2008, -7/+3Seriously...this is limited to just Digg or Stumbler users...anybody can use that service....they don't check if you actually do use the services they mentioned right?
- teh_spazz, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1Seriously, read.
- ZephyrNinety, on 04/27/2008, -17/+2Time for me to upload 250 gigs of Goatse.

- JustinHopewell, on 04/28/2008, -2/+12I'm going to brace myself for the oncoming insults at my naivety in this, but I've seen this joke so many times now on Digg and Slashdot and I don't understand the "???" part. Could someone explain it to me?
- danielcmetz, on 04/28/2008, -0/+30Underpants Gnomes. South Park.
The Underpants Gnomes have a three-phase business plan, consisting of:
1. Collect underpants
2. ?
3. Profit- JustinHopewell, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1Thanks, that would explain why I didn't get it. Maybe I need to give South Park another chance. Got burned out on it a while back, so I've missed a few years of episodes.
- Red05, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1Thanks! I've been wondering the same thing for a while.
- danielcmetz, on 04/28/2008, -0/+30Underpants Gnomes. South Park.
- ZeDJS, on 04/28/2008, -3/+7don't share illegal files then smart ones! Encrypt your files if you are paranoid. This service is awesome if you aren't a newb
- Hattrick, on 04/28/2008, -3/+2Then do an MD5 hash on it to create a hex filename and document the mapping to the original mime-type, encryption key, and filename in your personal records. Then you just have to try and not lose the key.
- Matt2k, on 04/28/2008, -0/+2That's a good idea. In fact, I highly suggest you hash your entire drive. Begin.
- neko, on 04/28/2008, -0/+31Oh come on, where are you going to find 250G of non-illegal files?
- darknailblue, on 04/28/2008, -1/+3Well that's a great point if you don't include things like:
Music
Applications
Porn
Movies
Games
:/
