File-Sharer Convicted in Sweden’s Biggest P2P Case

torrentfreak.com — A 31 year old file-sharer escaped prison this morning when he received a heavy fine and a suspended sentence for uploading music and movies. The court refrained from putting the defendant in prison, saying that the music industry needs to take some responsibility for the current situation.

  • Tenoq, on 05/06/2008, -0/+3Bear in mind Sweden's economy is a little different, and people generally have higher taxes and lower disposable income. That said, the fines are more realistic for any country, even taking income tax and VAT into account.

  • Christia, on 05/06/2008, -0/+2That's exactly how 'dagsböter', or 'day fines', work. Once the court has decided how many day fines a crime should cost, the exact value of each day fine is calculated from your financial situation.

    If the guy in the article were to be 10 times as rich, each day fine (and thus the total fine) would be increased by a 10-fold magnitude.

I think some fines should be based on income levels. 100 file for a poor man, might mean his family goes without meat this month. So essentially im saying if you make that much money... the fine should be 1000 dollars. that would be fair in some cases right?
