Probably every website you use including digg can trace it's origins back to a site someone looked at and figured could be done better.

I tried facebook once, and it was pure overkill, dozens of boards and gimmicks on one page.

I really couldn't understand why the ***** anyone would use it. Especially not now a days since Facebook has translations to a lot of major languages.
