- lifeandtimes, on 04/09/2009, -3/+63"Is it too powerful?" - What kind of ridiculous question is that?
- ramy33, on 04/09/2009, -6/+49NO!
The real concern here is Klondike bars...
I mean, what would YOU do for a Klondike bar? - onlysc, on 04/08/2009, -6/+42i still don't get all the buzz
- duvel, on 04/09/2009, -2/+38It's still a glorified address book.
- Jaime2000, on 04/09/2009, -1/+33Facebook begins to learn at a geometric rate. It becomes self-aware at 2:14 a.m. Eastern time, August 29th. In a panic, they try to pull the plug.
- rnawky, on 04/09/2009, -2/+28I'd bury your comment for a Klondike bar.
- miketowninc, on 04/09/2009, -5/+28Aren't there still 5 800 000 000 other people in the world? Wow facebook your so powerful
* Sarcasm* - shutaro, on 04/09/2009, -1/+231,000,000,000,000,000 files?
- rnawky, on 04/09/2009, -1/+19Yes but if any servers are located in Soviet Russia, the plugs would pull you!
- Spade914, on 04/09/2009, -1/+19"You have 200,000,000 application requests"
FFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUU - Pseudorious, on 04/09/2009, -1/+16This isn't Facebook's real problem.
The issue with Facebook is that it has reached 200 million users without a viable revenue model. All it can do is sell equity. - inactive, on 04/09/2009, -9/+2250 million people registered 200 million users....
- inactive, on 04/09/2009, -0/+12That's a lot of files.
- scarz99, on 04/09/2009, -1/+12I'm sure about 150 million of them are active users and the rest are forgotten accounts or something like that.
- yerdaddy, on 04/09/2009, -1/+12Powerful? It's pretty much pointless.
- RichMUrrills, on 04/09/2009, -1/+11I for one welcome our socially networked overlords
- kmusser, on 04/09/2009, -1/+10Would you kill a man?
- cRAYzed, on 04/09/2009, -1/+10Google is getting more powerful than ever.
Facebook? That's just a decoy. - inactive, on 04/09/2009, -0/+8Pedophiles usually have several alias
- duggdowncatisad, on 04/09/2009, -0/+7You have 199,999,900 (lil) green patch requests.
- sourabhg, on 04/09/2009, -4/+11define "powerful"
- draxenato, on 04/09/2009, -1/+8Power isn't just about the ability to exert authority over people it's also about knowledge, and tens of millions of people happily tap their lives into Facebook's databases every day. The Facebook system knows every tiny bit of detail that you tell it, what you bought on Amazon, where you went on holiday, and the deeper stuff like are you having an affair ? All those private messages are stored for a very long time. Are you in a support group of some kind ? AA perhaps ? Have you been ill recently ?
All of that data, all of your personal thoughts, fears and dreams are available to the US government under the Patriot Act and now others countries (notably the UK) want the same level of access to that data.
http://www.sentryparentalcontrols.co.uk/news/secur ... - blah247, on 04/09/2009, -0/+7To powerful for what? Competing against other 'look at me' sites?
- Zetsubou, on 04/09/2009, -8/+15***** THE RIAA!
- angusm, on 04/09/2009, -0/+7"Does Facebook need its own government?"
For what? To regulate important public policy on vampire biting and werewolf poking? To legislate trade agreements with Myspace? To ratify Facebook's territorial claims in the Indian Ocean? To authorize the establishment of a scientific advisory board that will manage the search for some kind of frigging business model?
Jesus, two hundred million people probably wear ugly-ass clothing from Tommy Hilfiger (last time I looked, everyone in Canada was wearing at least one item of Hilfiger clothing, so that's thirty-three million right there) but no one has proposed that Tommy Hilfiger wearers need their own government. Yet. - MagicHobo, on 04/09/2009, -0/+6For that chocolaty-coated, ice-cream loaded, big and thick no-room-for-a-stick Klondike bar?
- aoctavio, on 04/09/2009, -3/+9Make that 199.999.999 now, I just deactivated my account. I think they are unfair and fascist.
- inactive, on 04/09/2009, -1/+7ive got 3 accounts
- Iamthechamp, on 04/09/2009, -1/+7I think the biggest problem Facebook is going to run into is that history stays with you. You break up with your girl friend but the pictures stay...next thing you know 4 or 5 years from now you have pictures with all your different girlfriends still on facebook. Then people die, their accounts become memorials and whenever you sign on facebook you can't help but running into profiles of your dead friends; gets depressing after a while...this will be the end of facebook.
- ModernDayDarwin, on 04/09/2009, -0/+6You know people may like, do stuff, and other stuff.
- MasterGrief, on 04/09/2009, -8/+14Is it too powerful? It's a social networking site. So no.
I don't think this is something people should really be concerned about. - sandipc, on 04/09/2009, -1/+6………………………………………………………………………………………………

I'm worried that this is going to be an issue if I get into another long-term relationship, having pictures of me with some old gf on the site and crap :-\ is there anyway to like keep those photos since I myself don't have some of them but at the same time not have them be public information???
- LANjackal, on 04/09/2009, -0/+5What is up with tech journalists writing dumb ***** like this? As soon as a new service blows up some idiot takes it upon himself to suggest that's a bad thing/end of the world. This week it's Facebook, a couple weeks back it was Leo Laporte and a couple other people who should know better arguing that Twitter was "bad" because it's centralized. Hey ZDnet, talk to us when you have something serious to write home about. BURIED.
- inactive, on 04/09/2009, -0/+4that, and peoples bosses/co-workers on facebook. I have a friend who's having problems with her boss, and a lot of it has to do with what her boss sees her doing on facebook.
Then the other day I see my boss on facebook pop up in "friends you might know", and that's when I realiezed I need to cut down on the time I spend on fb... - StuartGibson, on 06/14/2009, -1/+5OH NOES! People know stuff I told them!
- smack1700, on 04/09/2009, -0/+4Right after the PTA disbands and a giant 200ft woman devours us first
- neom, on 04/09/2009, -0/+4Am I the only one who thinks this article was written by some nerdy student with very little point and a whole bunch of hot air?
- wakeupsticky, on 04/09/2009, -2/+6I'd ***** your mom. Hell, I don't even need to Klondike bar.
- troub, on 04/09/2009, -0/+4You can of course right-click and save them, and then untag yourself (assuming they're in someone else's album). You can also go to the privacy settings and set all kinds of options for who you want to deny or allow to see photos in your albums or tagged with your name.
- MindTrigger, on 04/09/2009, -0/+4I agree. How the hell is it powerful? I go there, ***** with my friends a few minutes each day, and leave. I couldn't care less about the size of Facebook, and it has zero impact on my usage of the site.
- bkraj, on 04/09/2009, -1/+4It's not like when it reaches a certain number of users it becomes a sentient being......OR DOES IT? DUM DUM DUMMMMMMMMM
- umbro, on 04/09/2009, -0/+3Of that 200m how many are actually in genuine use. I would suspect less than 1% given that fakebook does not properly close accounts, dormant accounts are not deactivated and many people have a hidden spare account that they use to see what their main account looks like.
- crunchdigg, on 04/09/2009, -0/+3That's a lot of lurking.
- inactive, on 04/09/2009, -0/+3wooosh
- MWeather, on 04/09/2009, -2/+5Yeah, it just contains the social connections, political leanings, reading lists, netflix queues, etc. of 200 million people. I can't see how that could be abused.
- inactive, on 04/09/2009, -0/+3Doesn't powerful imply the ability to exert influence?
- sandeepg, on 04/09/2009, -0/+3Agreed. As much as I like ZDNet, its blogs are really hit and miss. When objectivity's removed the writers really get the chance to exaggerate.
