- LANjackal, on 04/12/2009, -6/+257Correlation != causation. And in this case, I'm willing to bet that the performance difference existed without Facebook anyway. In my experience *generally* speaking the more academically inclined you are, the less you're likely to be into social stuff like Facebook. Many of my "smarter" friends in college dismissed FB as a stupid fad that would go away (Boy were they right *sarcasm*). Bottom line: FB isn't the root of the problem here. Which is exactly what the article concludes (why the stupid headline then?) Buried for the latter.
- inactive, on 04/12/2009, -5/+153I wonder what digg does to your GPA.........
- capnawesome, on 04/13/2009, -0/+91I definitely spend a lot more time procrastinating with Digg than with Facebook...
- HookmasterCH47, on 04/12/2009, -4/+77Duh... cause a lot of these people cruise facebook during class.
- ridestp, on 04/13/2009, -2/+65"do less well in exams"...
- Renian, on 04/13/2009, -2/+56FTA: "Our study shows people who spend more time on Facebook spend less time studying. "
This just in: doing other ***** instead of studying ***** up your grades! - dre229, on 04/13/2009, -2/+39I wonder what 4chan does to your GPA
- Catchwa, on 04/13/2009, -1/+34obligatory xkcd
http://xkcd.com/552/ - PatrickBrown, on 04/13/2009, -0/+32Forcing someone to use facebook seems to be immoral and cruel.
- lamejoketeller, on 04/13/2009, -0/+31I think the person who wrote that needs to spend less time on facebook.
- throneofdreams, on 04/13/2009, -0/+25They do worsely.
- HeDiggMe, on 04/13/2009, -2/+26They should have a control group of people who join facebook to see if their GPAs go down, instead of comparing groups of people who are already on or off the site.
- JuanBSU, on 04/13/2009, -2/+24Eye get 4chan on everyday. i think i do good in school/ pedobare is lol funny two the core}{!_

- 007isbond1, on 04/13/2009, -6/+23actually, since i started using digg, my grades have gotten much better.
- iDoraemon, on 04/13/2009, -3/+16In other news, Ohio State researchers have ran out of other things to research.

- qbthemc, on 04/13/2009, -5/+16Grades or GTFO.
- bingostud722, on 04/13/2009, -0/+11It matters when you are applying for graduate school....
- wrathofg0d, on 04/13/2009, -0/+11yeah picking up girls on facebook owns
- RoboDonut, on 04/13/2009, -1/+11GPAs don't mean ***** anyway. They're a measure of how well a person does in a classroom environment, now how well they are able to solve real-life problems. People who do well only study for tests and nothing else. People who learn outside of class because of personal interest are not rewarded at all.
- inactive, on 04/13/2009, -1/+10i think its more of the type of person who uses facebook a lot is the type of person who cares less about class.
- CaptainPanda, on 04/13/2009, -0/+9I lost mine years ago and my grades have improved ever since.
- gkskillz, on 04/13/2009, -2/+11Yeah, I had friends saying that 4 years ago. I just don't believe that, especially with the older generations subscribing to the idea of Facebook. Both my mom and dad have accounts now, and have been using it to connect to friends from college and high school. Since it seems that the older generations are slower to accept change, it seems like Facebook will take longer than 2 years to be replaced by something else.
- shadowsincircle, on 04/13/2009, -1/+9It makes it over 9000.
- dwninjungleland, on 04/13/2009, -2/+10this is the least scientifically rigorous thing I've read in a long time. bury please.
- Bravesguy18, on 04/13/2009, -0/+8I just got an image of chimps being forced to update their status all day.
- thejesusgod, on 04/13/2009, -0/+8It may not matter during a job interview, but it can matter a lot when resumés are being weeded out.
- Shaunzio, on 04/13/2009, -5/+13Me having a penis ruins my GPA
but you don't see me complaining - Mistaxe, on 04/13/2009, -0/+7Probably something to do with raping and sodomizing.
- chambana, on 04/13/2009, -3/+10Maybe it's that people that are dumber in the first place use Facebook more, so FB really doesn't do anything.
- SFIndian83, on 04/13/2009, -1/+8This is the best xkcd ever!
- Hincapie, on 04/13/2009, -0/+7my GPA was just fine, thank you. i can put down the internets and do work if i need to.
- rentmitchum, on 04/13/2009, -2/+8This week's obvious scientific finding submission? Looks that way..'
"Scientists have found that distractions from sitting down and STUDYING causes lesser grades on exams.."
Holy ***** *****. - namtlade, on 04/13/2009, -0/+6That's great and all but you could easily just replace your facebook and IM usage with anything else and that point would still be valid, such as WoW or eating bananas all day long.
Essentially, spending more time on your work gets you better grades. What a revolutionary concept! - snogye, on 04/13/2009, -0/+6I deleted my GPA when I started to take life more seriously. Om nom nom nom ... Spam.... nom.
- yuanzhoulu, on 04/13/2009, -1/+7duh no *****
- mg0001, on 04/13/2009, -4/+10Of course people who don't use Facebook do better- they have no friends.
- tofufever, on 04/13/2009, -2/+8Also, did your GPA ever matter during your job interview? The connections the person has on Facebook probably matters more than the GPA in the real world.
- snapcase, on 04/13/2009, -0/+5Considering the article description "Those who are on Facebook every day may do as much as one grade worse than those who don't." I'd say it doesn't bode well for digg users either.
(Read it twice if you have to.) - darknecross, on 04/13/2009, -0/+5They shouldn't single out Facebook, and just relate it to people who generally tend to procrastinate or become easily distracted during lectures and studying.
- regression, on 04/13/2009, -1/+6meh...i've seen better trolls. good try though. maybe you'll get them next time. :-)
- TheDigitalBug, on 04/13/2009, -0/+4...and your salary.
- inactive, on 04/13/2009, -1/+5OH FOR *****'S SAKE!
It's not about facebook, it's about ***** around and wasting time when you're meant to be studying or working. And if you like to ***** around and waste time then you're probably into facebook. Duh. - Tromoly, on 04/13/2009, -2/+6I was on Academic Probation at my university at the end of the Fall '07 semester, and at the beginning of the Spring semester I got rid of Facebook, MySpace, and all IM clients (AIM, MSN), and I can say with an honest and straight face that from breaking the addiction I actually put effort into schoolwork and my GPA shot up a ton. And since then I've stayed away from social networks and IM clients and my grades have remained very good, so I'm never going back to them.
- snogye, on 04/13/2009, -1/+5as obvious as it is, I feel it's true. I may have a significantly lower GPA after all the hours on facebook...
but, I just got a job interview with a fantastic company. Some of my studious classmates are not so fortunate.
Thanks, FB. -
