- l800LEMMINGS, on 05/27/2008, -10/+357facebook applications are destroying the internet
- seriousguy, on 05/27/2008, -35/+259This Arrington guy is really addicted to Web 2.0...
but the real question is
would he suck dick for it? - trevorbadly, on 05/27/2008, -3/+166This is guaranteed front page material only because it mentions Facebook and open source in the same sentence.
- flare1028us, on 05/27/2008, -1/+134I think this sums up why I hate facebook apps.
http://xs127.xs.to/xs127/08221/hate-facebook968.jp ... - inactive, on 05/27/2008, -2/+89No, they are just destroying Facebook.
- deadlift, on 05/27/2008, -9/+81Would you suck dick in order to stop sucking dick?
- benologist, on 05/27/2008, -18/+77Does Facebook actually need to go open source? It's not a small website but it's not exactly complicated to reverse engineer. I think all this'll lead to is 600 million clones launching the day after, while Facebook continues developing it in directions they see fit, rather than actually improving the platform and innovating which is what going open source should mean. A quick google suggests there's already plenty of clones out there you can get for free anyway, and various near-identical clones have been created already - that one in Germany last year, more recently that Chinese one that raised nearly half a billion in funding.
It's really just the data that needs to go open and this just feels like a distraction tactic on that front. The big players need to agree on a unified standard rather than each creating their own platform and hoping theirs is the one that takes off so they can position themselves as the middleman and cash in on all that data. There really needs to be an uninvolved, impartial 3rd party like OpenId for handling the data, not token gestures open sourcing a site that has already been reverse engineered and is easily available. - deadlift, on 05/27/2008, -0/+58I don't think they are necessarily opening up the code to actual Facebook site, but rather the platform where applications are created. Two different things. I'm sure opening up their site's source code would lead to vulnerabilities. And its a private company... I don't think they need/want outside input when it comes to their main code. But the opening of the Platform code is similar to OpenSocial movement by Google/Myspace. Read the article over for a better understanding.
- linuxpenguin, on 05/27/2008, -4/+60Anyone else think this is just horrible? I'm all for open-source, but Facebook's already littered with apps. At first some of them were sorta neat, but now it's just ridiculous.
- musntSurfatWork, on 05/27/2008, -6/+42Most Facebook girls are already "open and sourced"
- inactive, on 05/27/2008, -17/+48To the people digging him down because it's too long, learn to read faster. Like come on, ever hear of speed reading? It's easy to learn, if you haven't already on your own from reading a lot. If that took you over ten seconds to read, then you're a crappy reader. So go back to your damn xbox while popping Ritalin; reading's too hard for your dumb little lazy brain.
- freshyill, on 05/27/2008, -0/+24Are you saying you don't want me to request you for my Pirates vs. Werewolves vs. Scrabulous application?
- Testies, on 05/27/2008, -13/+35Remind me again, why should I care?
- Devrdander, on 05/27/2008, -0/+22George Carlin: "If it'll take me a couple hundred miles across the country, I'll take a shot in the mouth."
- mustafya, on 05/27/2008, -1/+22great, so more movie quizzes, vampire invitation, etc. Facebook applications are the devil.
- Thogster, on 05/27/2008, -0/+20I commend you on your reading ability if you truly can read close to two lines per second, and still get the meaning out of the text.
- Ocelot13, on 05/27/2008, -2/+21no, but hed suck dog for it
- aquadoctorbob, on 05/27/2008, -2/+17Vincent Michael Lagarde's friend is bad at blurring screenshots
- MScrip, on 05/27/2008, -1/+16I never understood why Digg is considered a social network. I thought it was a news aggregator. Sure, you can have "friends" on Digg... but I don't know anyone who has befriended me on Digg.
My friends and I use Facebook. - doshindude, on 05/27/2008, -5/+19That's actually pretty awesome.
- KoolKhemist, on 05/27/2008, -3/+16Personally, I enjoy a mix of VentureBeat and ReadWriteWeb over TechCrunch.
- lava, on 05/27/2008, -7/+20Wow, you seriously don't know what the ***** you're talking about.
Let's suppose that it's "easy" to replicate facebook. The hard part is getting people to come to your site. And if you had read the story correctly, they're opening the platform - meaning the stuff that 3rd party applications run on. - AManWithNoName, on 05/27/2008, -0/+13"This is a really nice limo."
"Yes it is. Now suck my *****!" - zmigliozzi, on 05/27/2008, -0/+11You think only seeing 20 facebook apps was annoying, oh you are in for a treat.
- xEn1gma, on 05/27/2008, -1/+11Ten seconds?
Kindly shut up. - deadlift, on 05/27/2008, -5/+14"when they all wake up or this Web 2.0 collapses on itself."
Pretty much the same thing. - HydrogenOxide, on 05/27/2008, -0/+9Super Ultra MEGA OPTIMUS PRIME poke?
- dgaspard, on 05/27/2008, -3/+12didn't see this coming
- jakatak, on 05/27/2008, -2/+11I enjoy techcrunch and gearcrunch. I just don't like it when we are forced info. I feel that he either owns part of the company or is getting paid a lot of money to talk about them. That needs to improve or I go elsewhere. Engadget and gizmodo have been clean in their representation of info for a long time. Never a problem.
- jeriqo, on 05/27/2008, -0/+9Okey. Just registered pornbook.com. Waiting for the code.
- WhistlinTom, on 05/27/2008, -0/+8Open Facebook sandwich?
- Testies, on 05/27/2008, -1/+9But, but..... I thought "useless comments" were backbone of Digg community?
Now I'm confused. :( - roket21, on 05/27/2008, -0/+8It means that the the platform that the Facebook apps run on will become open source similar to Google's OpenSocial. Unfortunately, this means that Facebook apps should be able to work on other websites that would use the Facebook apps platform.
- Narcism, on 05/27/2008, -1/+9Now when approached with clients who want to recreate Facebook for $1000, I have a solution...
- inactive, on 05/27/2008, -1/+8Ok when I saw the diggs of this comment it was at 0 but when I dugg it, it jumped to +140. WTF!?!
- joegibes, on 05/27/2008, -1/+8Unique, because it MIGHT be possible to reverse its flow down the toilet? Appblocker FTW.
- LightGrenades, on 05/27/2008, -0/+7all except graffiti.
- Step1Mark, on 05/27/2008, -1/+8ouch
- kjartan, on 05/27/2008, -0/+6don't mind ohmahgawd. i read his other comments and he just seems like a really bitter person. an ***** if you will.
- starskii, on 05/27/2008, -3/+9Took me longer to read that comment than to read the actual article :)
- Hairchrm, on 05/27/2008, -2/+8-Summer Glau
- richardhenry, on 05/27/2008, -0/+6That's the single worst reason ever.
- kotrin, on 05/27/2008, -3/+9poke
- diggdiggerid, on 05/27/2008, -0/+5FACEBOOK DID WTC
- ventralnet, on 05/27/2008, -1/+6It means opening up their source code so anyone can read it see how ***** works etc etc
- Amablue, on 05/27/2008, -4/+9You shouldn't. In fact, you should care so little you block these stories from the front page in your preferences so you don't have to see them, and then aren't tempted to make useless comments.
- vln004, on 05/27/2008, -3/+8can't wait to change the name and 'fork' it.
Get ready for Diggbook guys. - RoyalAwesome, on 05/27/2008, -2/+7"Facebook and Open Source are now in a relationship!"
