- airwalkery2k, on 10/12/2007, -4/+63Crap! Now I have to put up with songs popping up when I surf Facebook. That's practically the reason I quit MySpace.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+68Why would Facebook need music?
It's like opening your address book in outlook and hearing midis. - Shaudius, on 10/12/2007, -6/+56Slowly the differences between Facebook and MySpace are wanning. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but the moment that Facebook lets you change the color of your profile, it will lose the one "feature" that it has over MySpace anymore, that it doesn't look like crap.
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -2/+34Do you hear that?
It's the sound of emo kids swarming ever closer. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28the sight of emo Peter Parker has polarized them
- bryan4, on 10/12/2007, -3/+28Facebook is great because they always seem to add great features that are so seamless and professional but I'm extremely skeptical on how they can even try doing this with music.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+35myspace sucks because of all the musicians promoting themselves. and im a musician so you know it's true.
- NewChar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27Maybe if they turned the music off or had the volume muted by default.
- ziptnf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27Did anybody even read the article?
There will be Facebook musicians, but that doesn't mean that HTML and CSS will be allowed to run rampant and start music every time you load the page.
Stop assuming it's going to be like Myspace. - maglob, on 10/12/2007, -8/+31NOOOO!!!, Damn facebook, i love it now they want to ***** it up
- NeoCortex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22The second that loading a friend's profile in Facebook causes a song to immediately start playing by default is the second that I stop checking Facebook.
- SmashSource, on 10/12/2007, -11/+32Here is something my friend told me and I stick by it:
MySpace is an ugly girl, she used to be pretty hot but then all these musicians and sponsers got on her. She got a disease called Spam which happened because she was open and was near the top according to a geek named Alexa. Some slick FOXs (News Corp) got this info from Alexa and then adopted her and started abusing her. Now whenever you see MySpace she starts singing a song at you that you dont want to here. Her skin looks all fugly and you can see that botox.
Then we have Facebook which is Myspace's little sister. She is plain, young but cute. She does whatever you need, but you cant take advantage of here. Then Yahoo checked with Alexa to see how valuble she was and they decided to take her. But refused because she saw the mess they made with their other apps. Then her brain acted weird and for some reason she still wants to follow her sisters footsteps even though she is more popular. - Jawsh91, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21You DO realize myspace was at first for musicians...not for random emo kids
- xerus, on 10/12/2007, -5/+23So does this mean users can put music on their pages, or does it mean that I have to listen to ***** college bands that sound like Dave Matthews?
- aresef, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20Ah hell. There goes the neighborhood.
- Ransomowris, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19I just hope they can't be put on your profile page. I'll leave facebook then, because most of my friends are stupid enough to put a ton of songs on autoplay.
- Smeed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16They better include an option to disable it too.
- rlzzld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15By music, do they mean drunk college kids making up random ***** and raping their site with it?
Sounds like a party. - swavalier711, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11as long as the song is not turned on by default, I won't mind at all.
Then we can choose to listen to our friend's favorite song while not lowering ourselves to Myspace's level. - tempusrob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12"Stop assuming it's going to be like Myspace."
Exaaaaactly. As a musician, I'm real excited about this. Zuckerwhatever is a smart dude. Don't think for a second that he doesn't see MySpace's deficiencies (like blaring music every time you click a link!). Like all FB's other features, they will work to make it slick, and do it *right.*
They nay-sayers will continue to say 'nay' ... but I, for one, look forward to it. - inv1c7u5, on 10/12/2007, -11/+22I think music is a good idea...
and I'm so f***ing sick of all those facebookers who nay-say every change they make for about a week and then like it afterwards.
@maglob: qq - SultanTravi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I just know what I'm going to look at someone's profile and suddenly my headphones will jarringly begin playing "HEY YOU HEY YOU I DONT LIKE YOUR GIRLFRIEND!"
I hope they offer a setting so I don't have to hear people's profile music, or I hope that there isn't profile music. - quadvods, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Streaming music on a profile is fine... as long as it doesnt AutoPlay
- smackjack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9let's not just automatically assume that facebook will let people embed music onto your profiles. Maybe they're making something completely different than myspace music
- eyeRmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I think it is definitely good that the differences between MySpace and facebook are waning. MySpace was horribly coded, crashes all the time, and looks hideous. If Facebook does it, it will always be done better and cleaner.
- benjpw, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Myspace 2.0. Grrrrreat.
- fishrjv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I can't imagine that they wouldn't include this feature. One thing Facebook prides itself in is giving its members options. You can practically disable everything.
My personal take on this is not for members to add music to their profiles.. but for band profiles to become more prominent in a completely separate section (like MySpace music, or a site like Purevolume) - MikeSobe, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10I like facebook the way it was before it was opened to the public.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"According to my sources, Facebook will be announcing an online music service toward the end of the month. I had thought of utilizing Facebook’s API to add a music feature but that won’t be necessary. Facebook is also lining up various undisclosed partners prior to their launch. I’m amazed that it took them this long, but this will be huge. Myspace music has already been a huge success launching bands such as the Arctic Monkeys into stardom. Now with the growing popularity of Facebook and the college heavy demographics of the site, this could prove to be a massive entry into the music market. Also, given Facebook’s tendency to perfect each of the features on their site (their photo sharing service has become one of the biggest on the net) this will most likely be a pretty slick feature. I haven’t been able to get a Facebook representative to comment on this, but maybe Mike Arrington can do a little digging and give us the full scoop.
After doing a little Google Trends research I’ve come up with a pretty interesting graph. It looks like now would be a great time for Facebook to release a music product given the popularity of the search phrase “facebook music”. To be honest, I’m amazed that it has taken Facebook this long to launch a MySpace music competitor, but when it does launch I’m sure it will be a killer web app. I’m still waiting on a more connected blogger or journalist to give us more details. More to come!"

Mirror: http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/5623/10405605pd5.png - shadydentist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I tend to listen to music while I'm browsing, so its really irritating when music automatically starts playing. I hope its off by default.
- 35263526, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm not sure I like this feature creep. I love Facebook because it's so clean, simple, and elegant (also because it's well-coded and doesn't slow down my browser to a crawl), I really don't want to lose those things because of a drive for it to become more like MySpace.
That being said, I've been very pleased with the way Facebook has handled other additions in the past, so I'm sure that this individually will work well. - mononexo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'd figure this might come out closer to May 23, which is when F8, the Facebook Developer's Conference, will be occuring. There's going to be a keynote by Zuckerburg, so that'd be an interesting time to announce it.
- Zombi, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7I like facebook the way it is now.
- omaryak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Like all FB's other features, they will work to make it slick, and do it *right.*"
The Mac of social networking, if you will. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Neat, but even *more* logical would be a way to add comics. People check their FB like it was the morning paper, so why not have their daily strips embedded with the blessing of the creators?
- shaniber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2if this is a music player, then it doesn't make sense. what does having a music player on your profile page have to do with helping you stay in touch with your network?
if this is a music site, where bands are promoted, then this makes PERFECT sense. it fits with their apparent marketing strategy, AND gives friends another thing to talk about. - redrabbit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't think it'll be streaming music like myspace. Maybe intergration with last.fm (like the article's unmentioned partners) that uploads music you recently listened to in iTunes and publishes it on your mini-feed, with links to their online store?
- cryptoz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You love it because it didn't destory your computer?
This is a sad world. - Rethcir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hopefully
- RoloTomasie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That site was infinitely better when it was just a way to meet people and keep up with high school friends. I miss it being exclusive to college students (high schoolers and adults have Myspace, Xanga....). What the hell does it need more complexity for?
- Spo8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I think music is a good idea...
and I'm so f***ing sick of all those facebookers who nay-say every change they make for about a week and then like it afterwards."
We thought music was a good idea for myspace and look how it ended up. Myspace is an obese monstrosity that vomits ads at you if you get close to it. Facebook is nice, plain, and offers what people want. ***** no I don't want to arrive at someone's facebook to find 240 animated gifs that they have deemed appropriate, nay, necessary to translate who they are into digital form. And hell no, I do not want everyone's page playing a different song, resulting in my Firefox tabs screaming something that sounds like it was brewed in the very bowels of hell.
So in short, I disagree. - erikankrom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Having features similar to last.fm would be great. I think last.fm has a lot of potential, but doesn't have the user base. If you had a plugin for your major media players, or opened up the API to include adding music entries, this would be a killer feature. To tell you the truth, if they could integrate these, it would blow last.fm out of the water! I can see the people who listen to their music library at work all day sticking with last.fm simply because they don't have a facebook account, but for college kids who listen to their iPod for hours a day or who rock out to their music collection in their dorm or apartment, it would be great!
Developers, get ready to tap into some awesome opportunities for apps when they open up an API for it!!!!! - Harboggles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Noooooooo it turned into myspace!!!
- Atomic1fire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1music isnt evil
but I dont give a care what you listen to and thus I dont want to hear it by default - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@lemon67
that's great logic until you realize that no one listens to your *****, and even hates it more when it's promoted.
awakening others to great music is a gradual process that takes time and understanding.
maybe a teeny bit of spam here and there. for example: check my music! canopyradio.tv - smackjack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm willing to bet it will be more comparable to last.fm than myspace music
If facebook does this RIGHT and makes no dumb decisions, I see facebook music as becoming a huge tool for musicians - nickjag, on 02/04/2008, -0/+0Facebook has already said before that they will not allow automatic streaming on their profiles. A user must still click a button to hear a song. I'm really not surprised given how strict they are, even in their ad network.
Nick
http://www.facebookforbands.com - adamant1988, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Because the $1 gifts do an amazing job of keeping me in contact with people, too. In any case, I'm just going to wait and see what they do rather than ignorantly complaining about a feature that doesn't exist yet.
- roomy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0http://www.facebookmusic.com for a list music of widgets!
- Applecrisp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0WOW it is going to turn into myspace!
