- totorototoro, on 08/21/2008, -3/+35What we've learned so far:
1) Comcast: Lying weasels
2) FCC: Toothless weasels - tj111, on 08/21/2008, -3/+31Wow, the (Republican) FCC doing something to protect consumers instead of big business? I don't know exactly how I feel about this, other than being a little confused and nauseous.
- inactive, on 08/21/2008, -1/+23The FCC is actually doing something useful?! it must have been really dull over there since Howard Stern went to Sirius.
well good for them. - Pstmann, on 08/21/2008, -4/+23Comcast must have not paid their monthly GOP "campaign donation" on time.
- CrazedLeper, on 08/21/2008, -1/+15What's that dark cloud on the horizon? Is that...it is! It's a swarm of lobbyists!
- hooleydooley, on 08/21/2008, -0/+10You, sir, are NOT doing it right.
- bjzq8, on 08/21/2008, -1/+11I think FCC is a pretty cool guy. eh regulates internets and doesnt afraid of anything.
- serif69, on 08/21/2008, -1/+9Yeah man, they're evil.
- Wytchy, on 08/21/2008, -0/+8Comcast: Cheating weasels, too!
Every single month I have to go over my Comcast bill with a fine-tooth comb. There's rarely a month where I'm not charged for some service I didn't receive or don't even subscribe to.
One month I was charged for a movie channel I don't even subscribe too, and another month I was charged for a service call that never happened. Almost every single month I find unexplained 'misc charges' that I'm forced to call them about.
I have no options to switch to another broadband provider since Comcast has a monopoly where I live. - IphtashuFitz, on 08/21/2008, -0/+8Each time that happens you should file a complaint with your local regulatory board. Find out who manages the cable franchise in your town. There has to be a documented point of contact for filing complaints with them.
- rzealous, on 08/21/2008, -1/+9What the hell use is the FCC in just making them squeal? They must squeal in pain with a $2 billion fine!!!
- serif69, on 08/21/2008, -6/+13Republican has nothing to do with it.
"The FCC is directed by five Commissioners appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate for 5-year terms, except when filling an unexpired term. The President designates one of the Commissioners to serve as Chairperson. Only three Commissioners may be members of the same political party. None of them can have a financial interest in any Commission-related business."
Source: http://www.fcc.gov/commissioners/ - PatrickBrown, on 08/21/2008, -0/+7What are you talking about? There are currently 3 republicans and 2 democrats that make of the FCC commission:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Communication ...
And YES, it has been very partisan in the past. To claim the FCC is independent of political influence is incredibly naive. - magamiako, on 08/21/2008, -1/+6It is rather interesting to see what sides of people sit on the "Net Neutrality" debate. This debate has raged on the internet pretty heavily and flared up in recent months due to Comcast's tactics. But I've noted a lot of people also "support the rights of businesses to do what they want."
I wonder how many people truly "flip flop" their ideas on this issue. Go on to other threads and scream about how the government should stay out of "private enterprise" but come to these threads and "support the FCC".
Either way, I'm glad the FCC has stepped in and put the smack down to Comcast. Especially considering the details regarding disclosing to end users when and how protocol filtering will be triggered.
This is going to be difficult for Comcast, as coming up with "protocol agnostic" filtering will be pretty hard without implementing direct caps on users.
Either way, the fact remains that Comcast and other ISPs sell you bandwidth per month. How you use that bandwidth is ultimately up to you, since you are the paying customer.
I think ultimately what had happened was the marketing teams wanted to "sell a number", and didn't expect users to actually utilize it. Now that peer to peer and streaming video applications have taken hold of the internet and it's more than HTTP/FTP, they've got trouble on their hands.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out. - totorototoro, on 08/21/2008, -0/+5What we've learned so far:
1) Comcast: Lying, cheating weasels
2) FCC: Toothless weasels - bbtweb, on 08/21/2008, -1/+6props to the FCC - one of the best news stories I've read all day.
- inactive, on 08/21/2008, -0/+5I rhink RaidenWoW is a pretty cool guy. eh ***** up stale memes and doesn't afraid of anything
- creepermclurker, on 08/21/2008, -2/+6@serif69
With all due respect, where have you been for the last 7 years? - gamebittk, on 08/21/2008, -2/+5Comcast can't get away with this, and a scolding by the FCC will unfortunately do little.
Lobby your representatives to support net neutrality resoutions, specifically the proposed S.215 bill:

http://savetheinternet.com/=faq - maz2331, on 08/21/2008, -0/+3FCC isn't toothless. They actually COULD shut Comcast down entirely with just one order.
- kooftspc, on 08/21/2008, -0/+3haha its actually the smug from george clooneys acceptance speech
- normalkid0615, on 08/21/2008, -2/+5Its like if they promise 1 million customers 3MB per sec download speeds, but cannot deliver to all 1 million simultaneously, then there is something wrong, upgrade your network or stop selling subscriptions!
- SSCrow, on 08/21/2008, -1/+3Comcast still keeps shutting off my DNS whenever I have ANY torrents going. (like open office download)
Its really pissing me off. - adragontattoo, on 08/21/2008, -1/+3I think within limits that businesses should be able to do what they want. AS LONG AS, it does not directly or indirectly harm their customers.
Comcast will announce what they are doing to an extent (we have to keep the exact nature of our network a secret due to proprietary configurations) and will lobby to get exemption of some sort. - normalkid0615, on 08/21/2008, -1/+3This just in... I just signed up for triple play and started getting spam mail from security companies. Comcast is the ONLY people with my new address and name combo. I called them up and their like "uhh we don't do that, but Ill check on it". Bastards.
- CrazedLeper, on 08/21/2008, -0/+2I feel your pain. I, too, was forced to yield to Co*n*cast. Their product is better than it was when I last dumped them but they are sleazy people and sleaze always shows through.
I'm pretty sure I'm not getting 6mb/s on my broadband connection, too. I know they have the technology to make my pages faster when I go to a broadband speed testing site and slower at all other sites. - hypnotoad32, on 08/21/2008, -1/+2Tongue lashing.
2x entendre bonus. - scrtyfrk, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1*****! Hopefully this will be a warning to the other companies that we are angry and will not be taking it any more.
- maz2331, on 08/21/2008, -0/+1One of the big warnings the FCC gave Comcast is that they are not to try using filtering or degraded Internet connections to boost their own Video On Demand services, and not engage in any sort of filtering that bleeds out and affects other ISPs' networks.
Comcast may try suing to overturn the order on jurisdictional grounds, but the courts are very strongly biased toward accepting an agency's determination of its own authority under law, and will only overrule such decisions when it is crystal-clear that the agency is acting illegally.
If Comcast doesn't obey this order, they WILL be smacked by the FCC, and very hard. - inactive, on 08/22/2008, -0/+1Yeah, give them a firm talking-to. That will convince them.
- taseedorf, on 08/21/2008, -2/+2Imagine no P2P..........lag free games on COD4...
give 'em a good spanking - sindex, on 08/21/2008, -3/+3Expect to see the FCC mysteriously change stances on net neutrality if McCain wins the election and Robert McDowell becomes Chairman. Seriously.
- dannywhite, on 12/02/2008, -0/+0give them a good telling off - "naughty!"
