- faceness007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Scott was working in my department when he designed this down at UCLA last year. He and Gabe had an exhibition where they took this data and projected it onto a planetarium screen. It was awesome. I don't know why more people don't use planetariums for cool stuff like that. Anyway, I'm sure Scott and Gabe would be flattered to see how many fans they've got now. I'll let them know next time I see them.
- Griffology, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you can tell it's march (aka spring break) look how busy FL area is. fun to watch. :)
- just_chris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1re: blackpro-
Yea I noticed that to..very cool. That continuously restricted airspace (some pilots refer to it as "dreamland") also includes the Nevada test site- it's almost 5000 sq miles! - taniz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you look at the close up animation, you will notice a lot flights flying to a location where there is nothing on the map. It's off San Francisco, about halfway to Hawaii. Hidden base? Secret CIA headquarters? World Police Headquarters? Or something more mundane like an aircraft carrier?
You decide. - blackpro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Lastly did you all know that GE aircraft has live data that is being fed into their systems and shows the engines in flight and all the info as per their concerns... it is real time.. it really is kind of neat to watch certain aircraft from all over the world and start comparing data in a bar graph .. it looks like an equalizer when it shows. Wish we had access to it from outside their GE aircraft network.
- nilclop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm going into Air Traffic Control. Very Cool.
Definitely dugg!! - skunkman62, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As an Aircraft Mechanic, Dats da bomb diggity!
- mr_yuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0taniz - was about to make the same comment til I scrolled down..
too many flights at the same point from too far to be an aircraft carrier. I think there's a "hand off" error when the FAA takes the flight from the other side (they are originating from eastern rim) - nato64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that's one of the coolest things i've ever seen
- taniz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Mr. Yuk - Yeah, the number of flights from such a distance made it seem odd. It's probably flights going into the Bay Area, but the data is off. I like the Secret Pacific Base of International Rescue better.
- sherlock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I work for the FAA, specifically for air traffic controllers. Very neat.
- chevyorange, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Simply Killer. QuickTime too!
And good comment taniz - "ghost flights"! Where are they goin'? - Canned_Heat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now THIS is a digg!
Fun to watch in perspective of time zones. How the flights from the east coast to europe increase when west coast activity dies.
Then as the day begins, the activity sweeps from the east to west coast while at the same time, when morning hits the east coast, there is a load of crap that begins coming from europe.
Man! There's a lot of crap floating around out there! - Namco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Freaking awesome!
- tidal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0anyone got this same info for 9/11? I saw a small clip on tv of all the flights being grounded. very cool seeing the dots disappear as they landed.
- aeiron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1As a thermonuclear engineer. Uh. I mean retail salesperson, dug.

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0that was freaking SWEET!
- Evansbee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Where do you get this kind of flight data? I'm writing an application that requires flight data and I'm having a hell of a time getting it. I know he says "FAA" but i can't , for the life of me, find it on their web page.
- teh_toaster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0'I don't need drugs to enjoy this; just to enhance it' [EABF12] ;)
- MadKennyP, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Amazing. But why don't the people flying from NY to San Fran just stay where they are and the people who fly from San Fran to NY can do their work in San Fran instead, while the NY people do the work the San Fran people would've done in NY??
genius.
