- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Why did they call it Wallop? That's a strange name for a social site. I guess they meant "This site packs a vigorous blow!"? Or did they mean "Let's flop about"?
wal‧lop /ˈwɒləp/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[wol-uhp]
1. to beat soundly; thrash.
2. to strike with a vigorous blow
3. to defeat thoroughly, as in a game.
4. Chiefly Scot.. to flutter, wobble, or flop about. - dw2005, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4At least it looks better than myspace... but then again, what dosent!?
- ShrimpCrackers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah when I first saw "Wallop" and Microsoft I thought it rhymed with "Flop".
But looking at the way the site looks, it seems not bad, it doesn't look like a microsoft product or related project at all. I'm kinda impressed. - webtech, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Screenshots:
http://www.techcrunch.com/wp-content/wallop565.jpg - FZero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I used an early beta and it really sucked. All the interface was built on Macromedia Flash, everything was slow as ***** and the usability tended to zero. Really, it was a disaster. Taking from the screenshots kanavulator posted, not much has changed.
- gcnaddict, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I love how Wallop owns both wallop.com and the older mywallop.com
I have an account on mywallop.com which doesnt work on wallop.com. I wonder who pulled that stunt. - bigblueball, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The CTO gave me a walkthrough two weeks ago, and there are some nice features:

(So sorry couldn't help it), Worst geek joke ever: "Your mom is so ugly, she looks worse then Myspace." - trypnotic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It's what they want to do to their competition. Although perhaps they should have called it "Embrace and Extend"...
- AlexApetrei, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No no, EyeOS is crap, personally i don't like crap like this, i chat rarely and blog even less than that.
The thing is that most of the kids i know use a computer strictly for chatting and blogging and putting on cool wallpapers. The fact that they can have this anywhere they are ... ie school, is what would make this particular ahh... thing, appealing to teens and kids. Which is a 12 to 18 years old ( a sad 18 ) demographic. - gcnaddict, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1 Im a member of the old site (mywallop.com) which they abandoned. I doubt youd want invites for it. Its not as good as the new one.

Getting Started: http://blog.outer-court.com/files/wallop/large/2.jpg - ultrafez, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Does anybody have any invites for it? It'd be cool to get a Pownce-style invite thread going :p
- Shorties, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is anyone here a member currently? Possibly with some invites available?
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's what MS should continue to do. Don't plaster ***MICROSOFT*** all over their sites. If MS took their logo out of Live, and just focused on the Live part, they'd do much better.
But they've got to also follow that up with reliable service and trust. No selling off of user data, no sudden policy changes, etc. - happyyellowbug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1But do kids have credit cards? Apparently it is a "pay to create your interface" type model. It's about making people look good and having them pay for this...
- r00t4orce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Plus it's shiny, kids eat that ***** up."
Best comment ever! I nearly spit out my coffee. - maddogg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The forum for Wallop is phpBB: http://designer.wallop.com/forums/
- AlexApetrei, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Ohh, a web desktop ... how cool. Everyone's gonna join.
It's got some chance of success, teens basically use the computer for only this sort of crap, and if there are people who mindlessly flock to myspace, then this site has at least a 20% chance of success.
Plus it's shiny, kids eat that ***** up. - kanavulator, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Mmm. I don't know how this is going to fly; it doesn't use AJAX/ROR or anything...but Flash. And by "Web Desktop", you're not telling me you think EyeOS is popular and successful, are you?
Haha, what'll make it successful is interop with MySpace...since MySpace doesn't allow javascript, flash might make that easier. If they make it easy to make those fugly flash slideshow things, then perhaps this site will do well, but probably not for Social Networking. - snowcrashes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here's their official press release: http://www.wallopcorp.com/news.html
The drag and drop interface seems really well thought-out. It looks visually engaging and intuitive.
