- dmckean, on 10/11/2007, -2/+47Madison Avenue and Hollywood are the epitome of evil. All of this is just good vs. evil.
- leetdood, on 10/11/2007, -1/+39In other news, Google does everything right and gets rich.
Other companies complain, because they are not able to fleece money from customers anymore. - Rhapsodys, on 10/11/2007, -3/+39"what will Google be in five years?"
"Giant eye that knows more about me than I do"
Our only hope is that Google will deposit its soul into some sort of ring that we can throw into a pit of lava.
Ha - dmightx, on 09/21/2008, -2/+38As long as it stays at good vs evil and not evil vs evil its all good.
- Ammo0, on 10/11/2007, -0/+24It seems the entities that dislike Google are mostly companies, not the individual person. Google caters to people and those who realize that people matter.
- fkr3, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17I don't think anyone should be "afraid" of Google as such. They should hold some fear that Google might see their business model, convert it into "ad supported" and kill competition that way.
But so far their track record doesn't show much to be afraid of -
- When Google bought Urchin and turned it into Google Analytics, offering it for free. Other similar services like statcounter, w3counter and all the rest didn't die.
- Google's attempted-office hasn't killed all the other web based attempted offices.
- Google Homepage hasn't killed all the other "I need every conceivable thing open I might possibly need when I open my browser" websites, like pageflakes and that netvibes.
- Blogger hasn't hurt wordpress, livejournal and whatever six apart's platform is
So while there is risk in virtually every sector because Google is capable and has demonstrated they don't mind leaping into completely unrelated markets on a whim, to date there doesn't seem to be much reason to fear them.
But that only lasts until Google realises that their name isn't enough. When they start actually marketing their products it could be very different, and anyone offering any flavour of web based service could be in trouble literally overnight - unless they're the one being bought and rebadged anyway. - natmaster, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Yeah, it's totally unfair how Google is so success by not screwing its customers and instead providing great services for free. That's so not playing by the rules. I'm calling my mommy on you!
/end sarcasm - verstohlen, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8The bigger they are, the harder they fall.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8 Everyone knows the first part of Google's motto - Dont be evil.
Few know the secret second part - Until we are unstoppable! - mjsfl, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Google already had the guy that wrote that article killed.
- danarama, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7Google is backed by intenational sub government entities and has risen to success because of alien knowledge and technology. Basically they're evil.
- abhiroop, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Corporations aren't "evil", this is such a stupid assertion. Bill Gates doesn't get up in the morning and say: lets screw someone over today, oh look Steve is outside... ALL corporations are there to make money, thats it. No matter what services they provide (be it free, or paid) their ultimate goal is to make money. Of course everyone "likes" google because it offers its products for free, and the products are easy to use. That doesn't mean that if microsoft makes expensive products that are difficult to use they are immediately evil. If microsoft had bought out youtube and then tailored it to windows live most people would find that that would be "evil" because youtube was such a great site already. However, microsoft would make more money if people were aware that it was owned by them.
- Eragmus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Haha, nice. That reminds me of George Orwell's Animal Farm when certain corrupted pigs change their motto. "All animals are created equal" is changed to "All animals are created equal, but some animals are more equal than others."
Similarly, it would be in one's worst nightmare for Google to change its motto from "Don't be evil" to "Don't be evil, unless you can get away with it," or something similar.
I support Google, but the idea's certainly interesting. - MindStalker, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5And its runaway success in search and advertising has big corporations like AT&T and Microsoft crying monopoly without a trace of irony.
On what legal planet is Google a monopoly. In no way whatsoever are they preventing people from using other browsers to ad engines. So far they are the only near monopoly (in terms of market penetration) I've ever seen that didn't get there by using and abusing government. (Yes MS got there through use/abuse of copyright and contract law, as well as some shaddy deals with government contractors) - TheGiR81, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3An interesting tidbid about Google is, back when Google was still just a school project, Sergey and Larry acctually tried very hard to sell the source code to Altavista, Yahoo, Microsoft and several other well known corporate giants. None of them paid any attention.
In an age when democracy and governments can be bought, a Corporation like Google may be the only chance humanitys got to fix some of problems typical corporate greed, and capitalist neglegence has caused. - stockjones, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2"For a company that pledged to not be evil"
Anytime anyone makes a comment that this or that company is evil, it usually means they are either a young kid who has a very simplisitic view of how the real adult business world works, or they are just plain stupid. It was cool for some of you to call Microsoft evil, now maybe you realize its all about competition and the bottom line. - drivebymaster, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I believe google is great. It flat out beats ***** and does it very diligently, plus they are or rather atleast seem to have good faith in what they do, especially with their 411 service...though it is putting the little man out of business so to speak, but still none the less I believe google will thrive on, because if they do fall...they will fall hard and the internet could actually slow down for a while...(I'm not going to say crash because that would be impossible unless every computer in the world was shut off)
- mykos, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2The People's Republic of China isn't afraid of Google.
But its citizens are... - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5wtf, Google is awesome. People just want it to be evil cause its big.
- doncarlo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3phychohistorian,
You misquote the bible. It says "the love of money is the root of all evil." The fact is corporations are in business to make money because they have to make money to survive. You work at your job, if you have one, to make money because you need to eat. - danarama, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2comparing relevant effects Google for all intents and purposes is evil. Evil is ironic just like that dumb ass Bush is called "the leader of the free world". don't be ...
- psychohistorian, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3@abhiroop
As the saying goes, "money is the root of all evils". By saying corporation is there for the sole purpose of making money is to confirm that they are evil.
Leave that saying aside, it is the degree of which a company tries to exploit their position in balancing a fair price vs product/service delivers that ultimately gives any impression of evil to consumers. - Taorluath, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2This is stupid. Google is pure good.
- Vega310, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2"Google makes a lot of enemies. From Madison Avenue to Hollywood"
you know what they say, 'the enemy of my enemy...' - smek2, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1"big corporations like AT&T and Microsoft crying monopoly without a trace of irony" — hehe, exactly. What is a crook, calling another crook a crook?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Everyone is hating on Google. I have been following them for years. They are doing what they are good at. They are leveling the playing field in some industries.(like the free webmail one). I love Google. I know that I can go to google and type in a stock abbriviation and it pulls up for me what the company has been doing, right in Google. I use lots of their services. If they ever started charging, I would be *****. lol Stop hating Google. They are doing an amazing job!
- odarky, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Google makes good products and all, but the bottom line is, they still need to please their shareholders and make money. Let's hope that they don't screw up. Like other companies.
- gamechic, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Anyone that gets too big for their britches is dangerous. This includes Google.
- Karyyk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The seething hatred aimed at Google is coming from those entities who've been screwing people over because they were the only game in town. Google shows up and all of a sudden, there might be this new player who will not only compete, but do things the right way from a consumer point of view. When hatred is coming from the devil, you're probably doing it right.
- resta6, on 01/12/2009, -0/+1No you should be afraid of google, even if they come out with a product that enters into your business domain, chances are your product will be better in the long run. Google now faces the same problem as other big corporations, they are spread too thin, so its not that hard to compete with them, you can adapt to their entry and respond quicker.
But google really doesn't care about any of its products succeeding, all of their money comes from ad revenues, so if their Google ______ fails miserably, they can still bring in a ton of profit.
But yes, they do make it hard for the little guy, because they are giving away stuff for free that would other wise cost money, but that is why we have so many new services popping up, whose sole source of revenue is google adsense. What this is doing essentially, is turning the web into a bunch of google affiliates, which means when google goes belly up(far fetched? who knows), that means it'll take with it a TON of other dot coms - dysonlu, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2You know those banner ads? Yeah, those annoying banners that originate from DoubleClick, a company all of us hate. Well, Google acquired that company, remember?
Brainless worshipping makes you blind. Google is not God, nor Jesus Christ, nor Mother Teresa. It's out there to make money. Period. Before you know it, graphical ads will make their way onto the Google search page to help sustain the company's revenu growth and please its shareholders. - UnclePetie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I like that Google are upsetting Hollywood. With all the money that goes into lobbying FOR stupidly restrictive copyright laws, it's nice to see some big players on the other side of the fence.
- compuryan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0at the rate Google is consuming companies and their product, we are not far off from the literal "Google Earth"
- MonumentMan, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Off topic but....I assume most ppl here have seen the new google homepage and wondered (like I did) WTF is goign down with the whole:
"iGoogle"
thing? I mean, what does igoogle mean? I don't know why I hate it so much, but it makes google seem so corporate and such an, um, copycat ***** organization. I was wondering if others shared my views on this whole igoogle thing, or if somebody can make sense of it and explain it to me like "oh, igoogle is the google answer to the ipod and they're like going to sell 100 million desktop music applications blah blah blah. Always thought google was more unique that "igoogle" but I suppose I was wrong. - Sabin, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1And I for one welcome our all knowing, searching overlords.
- edebolt, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1The PRC citizens are far more afraid of their Govt than Google.
Why is it that everyone thinks MS has been evil for decades and now MS is saying Google is evil and people believe it.. If MS is saying something is evil then isn't that a good sign? - Malarie, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Simply put: Google is a digital god created by men.
- zombiedepot, on 10/11/2007, -8/+7I lost faith in Google the day they cooperated with the Chinese government's Orwellian censorship.
- pogfreak, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3In the same way I am a sexual god created for women
- syafthegeek, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0M$ and Yahoo! should be afraid of Google who's becoming more innovative than ever.

- digitalarcanum, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1 Don't be evil: enable it. You can thank Ubersoft for that one.
- thetaggerung, on 10/11/2007, -3/+0Google shall rule the world! lol
http://www.techcx.blogspot.com - penguinofhonor, on 10/11/2007, -7/+3google will eat the world. We will eventually be talking on our google brand cell phones driving our google brand cars and running into schoolchildren wearing google brand clothes because we were not paying attention to the road, but to our google brand DVD players.
Note that all this will be free, like communism. - hiPpymIck, on 10/11/2007, -6/+1..at the risk of posting blog spam..
