- lykathea, on 10/12/2007, -4/+134Step 1. Advertise .002 cents/kb.
Step 2. Charge .002 dollars/kb.
Step 3. Claim to not understand difference.
Step 4. ????
Step 5. Profit!! - robbh66, on 10/12/2007, -31/+103"Even after DIGG effect"
Yeah, people really need to get over this way overinflated sense of Digg's importance. A thousand people don't mean ***** compared to their MULTI MILLION subscriber base Verizon has.
Yes, digg me down for going against the digg bandwagon/mob mentaility/group think. - buckynekkid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+70I had to do a lot of backtracking on blog to get the full story, so just hitting just the youtube.com link doesn't help.
I've said this before, but I love it when the internet is used for good. Making greedy corporations pay for breaking verbal agreements (see the FYE bait and switch stuff too) would have required a lawyer in the past. With 'cable man falls asleep on couch' and 'cancel my aol account' showing the world your shady business practices, companies are learning that treating us like ***** isn't a viable option anymore. I hope everything works out when this is all settled. - corsairstw, on 10/12/2007, -2/+57"That will be .002 per kb"
"0.002 what?"
AARGHHHHHHH... People are so dumb. - Phatt138, on 10/12/2007, -7/+53Actually, I agree with what you said.
...but I'll still Digg you down for being one of those, "If people disagree with me it's because they're all just little sheep...not because they have a legitimate dislike for what I had to say" -people that infect all socially-driven sites these days.
--------
Just a thought: if a bunch of individuals dislike what you say or do, it may, in fact, -not- be because you're inherently better than they are. - MicrowavedH2o, on 10/12/2007, -3/+46"????"
represents the blank looks/ignorant responses from their customer service - kakwakas, on 10/12/2007, -7/+46"No wonder our country (USA) is rated so poorly on our math skills."
Silly Canadians still think American companies have their tech support in the US.
I still feel bad that the tech support girl is probably going to end up fired if Verizon tries to cover up its mistake. - Tazmaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+35I agree with the post made in the linked thread. Verizon is just begging for a class action lawsuit.
- Celeron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+35What a bunch of ***** idiots. Clearly, they have no business ethics.
- rancidpony, on 10/12/2007, -0/+31Just to note. Verison has already provided him with a FULL refund on his charges. The issue here isn't did they eventually do right by him. The issue is that they are still advertising .002 cents/kb to all of their customers. Verison just wanted to pay him off to make him go away like a good boy and continue their deceptive sales practices.
- lolwtfhaha, on 10/12/2007, -4/+34Actually there is no step 4: ???. It's a pretty clear and sound business plan and seems to be working well.
- Jrr6415sun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26caller: "so that's 0.002 cents"
her: "no actually it's .002 cents"
hilarious - Nebbie, on 10/12/2007, -21/+44@kakwakas
I know. I'm a Canadian, and I've also done my time doing customer service for a big American wireless company. You can make your "silly Canadian" jokes but I had to put up with waaaaay to many crazy Americans trying to figure out their cell phones.
Crazy Southern Woman: "So I haf ta mash da pad?"
Me: "No no no, just press the buttons"
Crazy Southern Woman: "ya 'k, I'm gonna mash da pad now"
Gives me shivers thinking about it. - p5ych0, on 10/12/2007, -8/+30http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fp6ccIiZp1Y
- cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -4/+24It's true. While the "digg effect" may seem all-mighty against blogs, local camera stores and local news agencies, it's nothing big companies like Verizon.
- webguy2k, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18now, it's technically .002 cents per kilobyte, not kilobit as it has been described
- Yez70, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Wouldn't it make more sense to just say 20 cents per Megabyte?
- D3koy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16the postage on that would be intense
- avolant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11this has nothing to do with tech support. they are looking up the amount that it costs and they are told it is .002 cents/kb. the problem is that verizon is outright lying to their customers ahead of the deal, assuming that most people will not ask what units .002 kb means in terms of money, and quoting the lower amount for those that do, while charging in dollars under the until recently very correct assumption that no one will notice.
and then, when we do notice, we still somehow assume that this is some kind of math error or issue on the part of the poor slob sitting at the phone.
anyway, ***** verizon. lying bastards. - The_Lance, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Verizon Wireless sucks balls..
- knightblade2oo4, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14buckynekkid actually brings up a good point.
if this is shown on a major news network, like the AOL account cancellation video or the Charter Employee, then I'm willing to bet it'll get changed.
also, for the record, the original audio is 40+ minute long. I listened to about 28 minutes of it (while surfing the web) before I was mentally stressed and had to go do other things. - D3koy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I heard this and I switched from Verizon to Sprint that day...In retrospect, I shouldn't have because it's not just Verizon, It's all major companies (not just all phone companies)
- lostspyder, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11So, just mail them your check in cents. It counts right?
- nickj6282, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I think you're right that Verizon Wireless doesn't instruct it's customer service reps to lie, but I DO think that they realize that reps are misquoting prices. And I think they choose to do nothing about it because they figure that the complainers will be in the minority and any tenacious enough to actually jump through the hoops to receive a refund deserve it, and all others pay regardless.
Luckily the telcos and cable companies haven't beaten Net Neutrality yet and the little guy (like George or Peter over at VerizonMath) can have a sizable voice with the right internet postings. - Chakz, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12Lynch the infidel !
- DrinkingNyquil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"'Wouldn't it make more sense to just say 20 cents per Megabyte?'
2 cent per MB"
Just for clarification.
.002 cents/KB = 2 cents/MB
.002 dollars/KB = $2.05/MB - muppethouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Thank god someone mentioned the irony of goofing on Verizon for not understanding the difference between a dollar and a cent - while the verizon math blogger didn't understand the difference between a bit and a byte. That's true irony.
- letterten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6AARRGGHHH! Someone needs to pass this along to the Federal Trade Commission and their Candian equivalent. Is Verizon intentionally playing dumb, for a 100-fold profit on advertised rates? Or are they just stupid?
- AnteChronos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"She was helpful, and just doing her job"
So her job is to lie about Verizon's data rate? I'd hardly call that being helpful. - JaggedEdge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5makes me all the happier to know i will be getting out of theyre stranglehold of a contract in january! Hooray!!
- shawnanigans, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8I agree and agree with your sexy avatar it reminds me of another geniuses.
- WhiskerTheMad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's the battle of the cell-service astroturfers!!!
- vick04, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4According to the guys blog, Verizon has given him a full refund for the $71 bill."Verizon's marketing materials now reflect that it is in fact .002 dollars per kilobyte if you head into Canada."
http://verizonmath.blogspot.com/2006/12/response-from-verizon-100-refund.html - Punisher2K, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4So a check in cents weighs more then a check for dollars? And you think Verizon is stupid?
- NinjasR2Cool, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think if you have the time everyone should call them and ask for their rates. If possible record the conversations, and then contact any local news agency you can get to listen to you. Give them the VerizonMath site, a couple of Youtube links, the recorded convos, and let their investigative people do the rest. In fact I think Ill do this in the morning.
- MikeMacMan, on 10/12/2007, -16/+19Business ethics? Hah. They don't exist. Businesses care about one thing, profit.
- superpixel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Readers in markets where cell phones and networks have evolved (Korea, Japan, etc.) are laughing their asses off at us right now. Verizon will continue this nonsense because your grandma doesn't read digg, and yeah, only knows to "mash da button."
However, if they have printed materials, or even a script read by a voice on the phone, with inaccurate data they refuse or neglect to change after it has been brought to their attention-- then you have a valid legal claim. I would write them a letter (yes, with dead trees and all), explaining they are violating the law by continuning a deceptive practice. Verizon, despite their megalith of money stature still have to play ball with the SEC, FCC, and mostly obey the laws of the land (CEO's need not apply). - LycoLoco, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8"It's true. While the "digg effect" may seem all-mighty against blogs, local camera stores and local news agencies, it's nothing big companies like Verizon.
Right, but see, you're forgetting that AOL, a "big company", changed a long-standing company policy after the "Cancel My Account" story got dugg. Yes, it hit other pages, but Digg is also a gateway for other news sites as well, and stories like these need all the exposure they can get. Also, not everyone who reads a story diggs it. Think about that. - EmperorAwesome, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Where do people get off citing any sort of "Digg effect"? Here's a project class: ask ten people today (not your geek friends, but a random sampling) if they've heard of digg.com or diggnation. For extra credit, ask them if they need an iPod to listen to a podcast.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Two things
1) This lying is a cheap business tactic
2) But even more, charging .002 dollars per KB in the first place is absurd!!!
Do you realize how much money you would have to pay to download, let's say, Ubuntu Edgy? The bill would go into the hundred thousands!
Just to surf the web for a little would cost around 15 bucks.
That is crazy absurd! - metamorfoza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think that first time I found about this story was on slashdot. I didn't know though who posted the news first digg or /. all I know that after few days i saw that recording on various websites (small and big) with "funny link of today" heading, not to mention the youtube once a video had hit the top video of the week. Poing being?
digg is not the only one responsible for the story to get spread around. I mean "even after.." statement in heading souds like the submitter of the story thinks that digg = internet. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3can anyone say class action?
- rnelsonee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've read this blog before, and apparently the rate will be fixed - the executive-level support became aware of this problem and said they'd disseminate corrected material to the reps. That probably takes time (update the manuals, get the update approved, print them, ship them, notify all managers). This still might be fixed in a month or so (for Canada anyway).
- Pignanelli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well, look at it this way:
1. Record your call to CS with them telling you it's 0.002 cents/kilobyte
2. Get billed.
3. Demand to be refunded due to the misquote.
Cheap wireless in Canada! - jimmajamma, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Its not so much about the digg effect itself, as it is that this issue has now been exposed to over 1,000,000 people as best as I can estimate. It's about to be the Top Rated YouTube video in News and Blogs for the month, with over 300,000 views there alone.
So if I think the poster's point extends to the repurcussions of the digg effect, not just the digg effect itself. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is a lot like the "unlimited" wireless net plans that limit you to 3 - 5 gb per month or they charge the ***** out of you.
