- mdehart, on 10/11/2007, -1/+44I am sure the Europeans feel the same about you.
- khabba, on 10/11/2007, -2/+31LOL I'm European and I don't hate Microsoft. I just use firefox because of the usability and the great amount of addons.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+32Firefox is a must have when you browse the internet, so ...
- d686, on 10/11/2007, -0/+25This isn't anything to do with hatred of Microsoft or the USA. It's just about choice. I live in Europe and love (50% of) the US and don't care either way about MS. I use Firefox simply because it's better. It's the same with all the Internet cafes that use Linux -- they do it because it's free and it works.
- estvir, on 10/11/2007, -6/+17> Europeans hate Microsoft for the most part, ..
That's quite a statement, any basis? Oh, and complaints from the EU do not really count as all of Europe. - magus_melchior, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12If this is an accurate measurement of Firefox's market share in Europe, it's very encouraging.
Then again, there is that phrase about 3 kinds of lies quoted by Mark Twain... - Batiu-Drami, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7In the story they don't actually say IE7 - just Internet Explorer. The 7 was added by the submitter.
- Yazilliclick, on 10/11/2007, -5/+11Like hell it is. Which browser you use out of the latest versions is simply a matter of preference these days and far from any matter of necesity. Personally I prefer Opera.
- lindajeff, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5More graphs and charts covered about this story before that site:
http://www.product-reviews.net/2007/07/15/europe-loves-firefox-with-28-market-share/ - JackyAppleJones, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7Are you on the right article?
- Scruffydan, on 10/11/2007, -5/+10what about ie6?
The stats for my sites, show ie6 as being more popular than ie7 almost 2:1, so assuming this is also true in europe surpassing ie7 isn't such a major milestone.
still any decrease of ie marketshare is a good thing in my books - LucianValentine, on 10/11/2007, -6/+10Australia and New Zealand show an even higher trend and having lived in New Zealand for the previous 11 years and now living in Australia with a two 6 month trips to Europe in between I can say that I definitelly "felt" that this data is accurate within these regions. Good on XiTi for actually recording these statistics.
- oojamaflip2006, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4You again? I've already asked you nicely to stop spamming your delightfully ad-riddled website on here. I guess the only option is to ask you not-nicely. OI ***** STOP ***** SPAMMING YOU *****. Thank you, I hope you enjoy the rest of your day.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Yay we can stop programming websites for IE and focus on standards....
- init100, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5@ICSU
Dude, if you won't allow Microsoft to do whatever it wants, including break laws, that's a clear sign of hatred of Microsoft.</sarcasm> - loconet, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5They also use the metric system, reasonable drinking age, sane drug laws, no obsession with censoring everything, a rising economy, etc. Seems like the old continent is "growing up". Why is North America so backwards lately. If I were fluent in another European language, I would probably move there.
- lhnz, on 10/11/2007, -5/+9That doesn't really say much. The US attacked iraq - how many people in the US agree with that?
- EoinOL, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Opera has identified itself as Opera by default since version 9, and I would guess that most Opera users have upgraded to at least that version. Additionally, many Opera users would have been changing the agent string to identify themselves as using Opera before that change happened. I don't think user agent strings are a significant factor here.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4europe owns u1
- hipnotic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Yeah, but Britain is ugly. It looks depressing with red brick houses all over the place, and has almost no grand, classical architecture like France, Germany, Austria, Italy, etc...
- bigtomrodney, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4No. Microsoft has a holding company in Ireland to avoid certain taxes in the US. They did however benefit from some tax reductions for opening up a massive centre in Dublin, much like you would see anywhere that is trying to foster foreign/coporate investment.
- rauz, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Oh really? Where is "over here"? I like Opera and all but the only people I know who run it are the geekier types (nothing wrong with that) whilst everyone else runs Firefox (like my sister, parents etc) or IE6 (grandma).
- jason469, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3FF is better than IE's ActiveX drive-by infected garbage.
The plugins alone make it better. - mishsquish, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I live in New Zealand and even my most non-tech-savvy friends use FireFox. I can count perhaps 2 people that are aware of firefox but use IE instead. And that's just out of their own laziness.
- ICSU, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Complaints by the EU are not caused by hatred so...
- Yazilliclick, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2lol standards. IE may not be the best at following standards, it may even be near the bottom, but absolutely no two browsers implement them the same so it's a rather silly discussion anyways. But I suppose for the mindless supporters it's nice to be able to claim something else without knowing ***** all about it.
- AlmostEvil, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3What? Are you even a programmer?
To a non-programmer of course it will look like gobbledygook, and saying the linux kernel code base is a mess is the most retarded thing i've ever heard. You _might_ have gotten away with the remark on Firefox because there is some legacy crap still kicking around that's being gotten rid of, but the linux kernel?
You're full of it. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I used to work at a this top 500 company and individuals used to complain of their home computers being affected while they used IE for internet. One day, I got tired of trying to fix their issues and said, "why don't you all use firefox." They never even heard of firefox then. Before I left the company, some of them had told me that was the best move they have made. If I come across anywhere, friends, work or etc, I automatically uninstall IE from the system. Its the biggest garbage ever created.
- worthone, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4You should try, say, Great Britain.
- SimonGray, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Ireland is another option. But everyone speaks English in the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland, so you can move there first and then learn the language. We're also pretty non-religious if you consider that a plus.
- Mayhew, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Woot, reppin' 38.6% Eire.
- init100, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Even if that happens, people don't need to switch browsers, they just need to install NoScript. :)
- LordSnooze, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2You're going to think much more about Europe as they continue to push past us in...
Healthcare and Education.... and now they are embracing a better browser faster than us. - Iam9376, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3If your going to quote a comment, you might as well reply to it.
However you don't seem to understand what i actually said. which is that the code base is old, poorly maintained, and need of a revamp.
IE6/7 have more bugs because the developers are idiots. That doesn't exclude Firefox either, recall Gecko is based from the OLD (and i mean OLD) Netscape code, which... isn't all that.
Firefox also contains many 'features' that are horribly implemented, requiring obscene amounts of memory (and sometimes cpu cycles).
Firefox is slow, bloated, outdated and in need of a revamp.
KHTML render is vastly better.
There, I said it. The uninformed will Digg me down. - init100, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1"Where is "over here"?"
Tonga, Niue, or any other tiny island in the Pacific Ocean? ;) - oojamaflip2006, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Sadly half or more of the people who use the internet in the US, Europe, Asia, Africa and South America will still stare blankly at you if you ask 'which browser do you use?'. Maybe one or two will ask 'what's a browser?' in reply.
- SimbaK2K, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Don't know if your telling the truth or not, but I have no reason to not believe you. However bloated or not, firefox is the superior browser for most people. I make sure I install it on anyones computer I happen to touch and remove the IE icons :D
- Renton, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Any browser that passes the acid2 test is good enough for me.
- maisteri, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1To make sure that you aren't misleading anyone, Finland is not one of them.
- vdog, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I'd say 90% of users don't know what a code base is (cue that Mark Twain quote again), much less care about how good it is. As long as it's stable, quick enough, less buggy than IE, and allows them to use their extensions, why would they care if it's a mess?
- philz, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Put it in context. Many users, you know those who say "Oh the blue E - that's the internet", don't know or care about their start page. Firefox points to google. IE points to M$'s MSN.
If nobody is looking at MSN's ads, who's going to buy MSN ad "space"? And there's you loss. - lengau, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Go to Europe. Look around. Talk to some of the people.
And please, stop being such a fanboy! - Mencucci, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Proud to be a Slovenian. ;) We are #1 in Europe for Firefox use.
- bigtomrodney, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I'm not British, but I have to chime in and say you are talking out of your ass. Britain has LOTS of classical architecture.
- noerrorsfound, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Opera is great, but I wish they would make the interface less Windows-like on the Linux versions. If you've used Opera on Linux, hopefully you know what I'm talking about.
- init100, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I doubt that sites that support Firefox would require Opera to disguise itself as it to work.
- Nutmegan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1At the time? Most.
- richardiscool, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Whether it's hatred or something else, overly American things don't go down too well.
Many advertisements have failed due to American companies leaving an American voiceovers on them - ask Apple.
There's an advert on TV for some huge ***** off American car at the moment, and they're STILL making the same mistake. Not that I'd ever buy an American car anyway. - Jegzzy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I love Firefox and Firefox loves me!
- jonvdveen, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Alas! I am ashamed of my country of ancestry, the Netherlands. Seriously, you Dutch bastards, switch already!
