- GIJOE3k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2WHY, WHY, WHY!!! I loved Ess.tv. It was such a wonderful service. I wonder what exactly got the mpaa upset with them. The weird thing was that they could show certain shows but some shows couldn't be shown due to "legal issues".
- eliasbats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1TV shows is art and art is meant to be free. TV productions are paid loads of money by the tv networks, even when the same episode is broadcast again and again. The $5 dollars ess.tv requested from every user is nothing, if you think what bandwidth is needed to air all that 50 streaming channels. ESS.TV guys just stood up for free community TV!

This is a copy of the e-mail that's being sent out to all our subscribers:
I'd like to open this e-mail by thanking you for supporting the ess.tv service. Our subscribers were the only reason that this service was able to survive as long as it did - we could not have done it without you.
Unfortunately, due to increasing pressure from various organizations, ESS will have to shut down operations this weekend. All subscriptions will be terminated and all of our streams will be taken offline. It is with great regret that we end this service that has provided nothing but enjoyment and niche-show awareness for this past year, but we do not have the financial backing to attempt to contest the claims made against us.
I will be handling refunds on a per-person basis. If you feel that ESS has not been worth your $5 for this month, then please send a message to support@ess.tv and I will arrange a refund. For those who do not ask for a refund, you have my thanks - it will be very difficult to close out this month's server bills if everyone asks for a refund. =(
Thank you again for supporting ESS. We'll miss you. - zigge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you were a member you got 24/7 access no waiting and it was only $5USD a month.
- NYTDDS, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0LOL the funny thing about it is. I dont think any of you remember when Joshie, who owned ess, was streaming illegally obtained copies of movies via shoutcast, and then got smart (as well as stupid) and started charging people for subscribtions to stuff he didnt have any right to charge for. He had no broadcasting lisence, it was all purely Pirate Broadcast. lol I even remember one night, the movie he played was over, and he said if any females vote for the next movie (voting happened through AOHell Instant Messenger) they're votes counted as 10 votes. I'm not bashing on ESS TV mind you, if it wasnt for Joshie, I would have never fell in love with Red Dwarf. But he shouldnt have started charging untill he was able to find every possible way to get past all the legal mumbo jumbo. He got greedy. Plain and simple.
- mrsoprano, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0ess.tv was great, but eventually it was bound to be shut down. the people who ran it knew about copyrights, and knew that what they were doing was illegal. All the 'law abiding citizens' who never heard of ess tv had to purchase cable, satelite, or the DVDs, but here was a free service 9if you didn't have a subscription, that anyone with a broadband conncetion could use.
Even if the people who ran ESS Tv didn't make a profit in the end, and had the best intentions, to let the public know about these great shows, they would have had to get explicit promition from the owners.
The only thing you can do now is have the guilty pleasure, of knowing that sometimes you could enjoy a great show for free. I caught the end of the final broadcast of ess tv this past weekend, without knowing it. They ran the full Sopranos shows back to back from season 1 to 6. As it happens, the only episode I missed was the last of the 6th season due to relocation to Spain, and they dont have HBO here. Thank you ESS tv!
