- peterfnet, on 08/13/2008, -2/+100Too bad I have Comcast
- iissmart, on 08/13/2008, -2/+80Will this get ISPs to realize BitTorrent can be used for good?
Doubt it. - NorthStateGonzo, on 08/13/2008, -1/+26Transmission Complete~
By the Way to the guy 4 floors up.. Drop comcast WTF..Join the Fight for Freedom!! Fight Global Terrorism!!! - netneutrality, on 08/14/2008, -3/+24They don't care what you're using it for. It's just a bandwidth hog is the reason ISPs don't like it.
- wukillabee, on 08/14/2008, -2/+20umm a lot of betas use bittorrent for distribution like the metal gear online beta
- Ryosen, on 08/14/2008, -0/+12Blizzard has been using BitTorrent for World of Warcraft for a long time.
- vawksel, on 08/14/2008, -0/+10Warhammer better be a thousand times better than AoC.
AoC was such a huge disappointment. - synystar, on 08/14/2008, -0/+9I thought that the FCC told Comcast to "behave themselves". What a rebuke that was, but hopefully Comcast will comply and not exploit loopholes. I've never had a problem with MediaCom. Not unless you count absolutely horrible customer service.
- syxxness, on 08/13/2008, -5/+14I have Comcast and have absolutely no trouble BitTorrenting. Must be a regional thing.
- IndigoMoss, on 08/14/2008, -0/+7I was in the closed beta, the speed was great, but the file was huge. Also when they released a new version, like 3.1 to 3.2 it downloaded the client again. I was glad that if I closed it for any reason, it'd start where it left off, much like a normal torrent would. All in all, I'm extremely happy with it, because not only did it max out my 20mbps connection, it let me resume if I had to close it for any reason.
It seems that P2P type distribution is not only a lot more efficient (I usually max my connection on the Blizzard downloader), but it reducers costs to almost nothing, so even smaller companies can push releases through it and not have to worry about traffic swamping their servers. Just further proof that P2P technologies don't have to be used for piracy. - Vindicoth, on 08/13/2008, -0/+6Hah, I'm in closed beta and had the pleasure of downloading the entire game through the patcher. It was actually really nice.
- Discobiscuits, on 08/14/2008, -4/+9i like turtles
- IAmSam14, on 08/14/2008, -0/+5Because it saves a lot of money
- blorc, on 08/14/2008, -0/+4Well, I'm definitely getting throttled, so they're still doing it in South Florida.
- stanfy86, on 08/14/2008, -0/+4It will be, if you check out the warhammer online webpage, and check out the development podcasts, they really are quite informative, and outline all the different things they are doing in it.
- ComeOutSwingin, on 08/14/2008, -0/+4*Mythic
- inactive, on 08/14/2008, -0/+3i don't know about you, but I surely wouldn't complain if i was even invited into the beta.
- Kruzen, on 08/14/2008, -0/+3Some of us don't have the option. Here in University Place, WA I can either wait 9 months for Tacoma Click to dig a hole through my neighboors yard and mine from the street corner or endure comcast.
- 37RUSSK4N, on 08/14/2008, -0/+3Im really, really glad to see this sort of thing. If digital distribution is going to be the 'next big thing' then we might as well be using solutions that make sense. Insert obligatory BT FTW here.
- ch4os1337, on 08/14/2008, -0/+2lol that comment fails. Its the exact definition of a dupe - 3 minutes and popularity :P
- LordSeth, on 08/14/2008, -1/+3Man I got the invite but for me its the slowest torrent I have ever tried to download. Other torrents download so much faster than this I have just about given up and will just wait for my pre order to arrive
- ch4os1337, on 08/14/2008, -0/+2Also the patches/expansion packs give you the option for direct download or p2p, with p2p being recommended.
- Calypsoaf, on 08/14/2008, -3/+5To bad this won't do you any good without an invite.
*cries softly* - Merp08, on 08/14/2008, -0/+2I agree.
Look what happened when they got rid of Napster!!! - insanebrain, on 08/14/2008, -0/+2football bets. .. . .wow. . .just wow. .. I really needed them.
- Kral, on 08/14/2008, -0/+2Now if EA would just stop with the ***** EA Download Manager thing where you have to pay an extra $6 if you want to be able to download the game you bought up to 2 years later. They should just have it download via bittorrrent. As-is, their 'lose access to game' model is why everyone opts for Steam or Direct2Drive - your game remains your game.
- IAmSam14, on 08/14/2008, -3/+5It was submitted at the exact same time, so its not really a dupe.
- ju66l3r, on 08/14/2008, -0/+2Yah, Mythic. Crap. Thanks. It's also been a few years since I played DAoC.
- achoi, on 08/14/2008, -0/+1I preordered from Amazon the day it was announced. I've checked several forums as well, and there seems to be a large number of people that did not get in either, as there are still several criteria that needs to be met. One of them being that you cannot be a member of the press (as the NDA is still not lifted yet), or that my computer doesn't meet the requirements for closed beta.
In any case, while I am upset that I won't be playing in the preview weekend (which I'm guessing is this coming weekend, since OB signups begin on the 15th), I'm not going to kill myself over it. - ju66l3r, on 08/14/2008, -2/+3This is how Mystic began distributing Dark Age a few years ago so it's no doubt that they were going to do it for WAR too.
- achoi, on 08/14/2008, -0/+1I preordered the Collector's Edition but looks like I'm not getting in the Preview Weekend. *sadface*
It's okay, I'll be there for open beta and the headstart. Which should be.. "soon" (I hope) - Otnehs, on 08/14/2008, -0/+1I would really like to be able to drop Comcast, but the only other broadband in the area is SBC Yahoo! DSL and that really doesn't cut it. Even with Comcast's traffic shaping it still downloads faster than DSL. (I know, I had both ISPs for a few months.)
- hartley, on 08/14/2008, -1/+2Why wouldn't EA or any large publisher release files in torrent form?
When you have an online presence as large as EA, bandwidth doesn't come cheap. *Direct lines, server costs, etc etc* - se7en11, on 08/14/2008, -0/+1always the correct answer
- nopointinnames, on 08/14/2008, -0/+1I'll back that up, I live in atlanta and have never suffered from any throttling from comcast. As much as I dislike them, they have always been solid for me.
- tweaq, on 08/14/2008, -0/+1I thought I was the only one. For the past month of so, I've been uploading at a constant 200+KBs on bittorrent. Speed tests say I'm getting ~15mbs down and about 1.5 up.
- blitz718, on 08/14/2008, -0/+1I thought they might have moved it but the NDA is indeed lifted the 15th, this is why it is called open beta! Check your account status on the site (im sure you've already done this), then email the devs, im sure it will be cleared up just fine if you just drop a message.
- Genma, on 08/14/2008, -0/+1that's the point, it is a regional thing. so they can pick and choose where to throttle in order to provide the "superior experience" for certain protocols they deem acceptable. depends totally on how oversold your area is, if they can meet the demand then _everybody_ gets the "superior experience." otherwise _you_ get throttled so _others_ can receive the "superior experience," see how that works.
- netneutrality, on 08/14/2008, -2/+3Do you object to them wanting to make money from selling their game? Why would they make games otherwise?
- MavRevMatt, on 08/14/2008, -2/+3So define 'dupe'? To me that means 'duplicate'.
- Duncan3, on 08/14/2008, -0/+1Company X uses P2P to avoid their hosting fees, makes your ISP pay instead. News at 11!
Everyone is doing this now, it's no longer news. - blitz718, on 08/14/2008, -0/+1Where did you pre-order CE? All CE preorders got an invite sometime between saturday and tuesday.
Headstart for CE preorders are Sept 13th, regular preorders Sept 15th, and release Sept 18th. - xdevit, on 08/14/2008, -0/+1Correct me if I wrong but bittorrent doesn't help isp's, it helps companies save money by making us, the users.. distribute their software. EA will not need to pay for so much bandwidth to get Warhammer out. Now if ISP's got smart they could seed locally on each peer so that you only download inside the peer if possible. Thus allowing the isp to not borrow bandwidth from other peers. Basically you would only download from your neighborhood and not the world. In the end it would be faster and less on a network.
- Lunarbunny, on 08/14/2008, -0/+1They seemed to do it on and off here (Seattle area) but at the same time I've been doing pretty well.
@tweaq: the speed tests are bull, it's a major (probably intended) side effect of "Powerboost." More likely you're hitting 6Mb dn/512Kb-1Mb up sustained.
Oh, and I think you can game Powerboost by alternately capping just below max sustained bandwidth and then uncapping it. I did it manually with uTorrent caps once, but I'm sure somebody with a little time on their hands could script such a thing. - AionGlobalcom, on 09/02/2008, -0/+1Duncan, do you know how stressful it is for server to pump 10gb file?
- banderwocky, on 08/14/2008, -0/+1Shockingly, that is sorta what bit torrents are designed for.
- peterfnet, on 08/14/2008, -0/+1http://www.broadbandreports.com/shownews/Comcast-C ...
"Comcast and BitTorrent this morning jointly announced that by the end of this year, Comcast will migrate "to a capacity management technique that is protocol agnostic." In other words, it appears that after months of public outcry, bad press, hearings and an FCC investigation -- Comcast is ready to abandon its practice of forging TCP packets to throttle upstream P2P traffic on its network." - Merp08, on 08/14/2008, -1/+1It's about time someone took advantage of it. If EA was smart they'd just ***** buy Bittorrent up!!! jk!
- inactive, on 08/14/2008, -1/+1Got some great speeds on the torrent...yay for Warhammer Online.
- SmithOzuma, on 08/22/2008, -0/+0It's really really slow!
