Dreamhost - Outbound Email restored @ 11:21pm EST (23+ hours without email)
techmcc.com — Dreamhost, a popular web host went down today for approximately 23 hours. Popular for their incredibly low rates and very generous allocation of resources to customers, Dreamhost has received mixed reactions from customers about the downtime. Now it's up to 350,000 webmasters to apologize to their visitors. Good luck to us all.

- bludragon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The outage was due to a building-wide planned downtime for preventative maintenance to avoid a potential ground fault to the whole building. Dreamhost experienced problems returning to service because of a core router problem.
I dont know about anyone else but my email was out for the planned outage plus the 2-3 additional hours Dreamhost needed to address the router problem. My email came up almost immediately; my downtime was 5-6 hours from midnight to 5am Sunday. Not what I would call crucial, and also unavoidable. Also, advance notice of this downtime was passed on to Dreamhost customers as soon as they were informed by the building: 3 days prior to the planned downtime.
While some customers may have experienced longer outages, with over 350,000 domains, some difficulty is not entirely unexpected. It isnt exactly like plugging the cord back in and flipping a switch...
BTW, I am NOT a Dreamhost employee, just a satisfied customer for over 6 years. I have used other shared hosts, and I much prefer Dreamhost. They have had their share of troubles over the last year or so, but they are completely upfront about problems and make every effort to correct them.
