You're A ***** Idiot. - evangelion01, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18i dont give a ***** if you "digg" it or not, so please stop it... is ***** anoying.
- thegsa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10This guide will show you how to download videos from Youtube and convert them to MPEG or AVI.
Have the URL of the Youtube video you are wishing to download handy, open http://www.keepvid.com , click on the %u201CYoutube%u201D tab. Enter the URL in the box provided.
he file should download; file size should vary according to the length of the video.
Once this has completed, download http://rainscape.org.uk/flvconvert.zip , once it has downloaded, extract the program file, run the exe.
Select the files you downloaded using Keepvid, by pressing %u201Cadd files%u201D.
Now it%u2019s time to select the output folder, simply press browse and choose the directory.
You should now choose the encoding settings, the video shouldn%u2019t need to be more than 300k/bits. So making it 600k/bits will only increase the file size, and not make a huge difference to the video.
You have 3 options with the file format, MPEG1, AVI and MPEG2. I recommend you select MPEG1, if you do not have another idea in your head already.
Done! press process and your video should be finished in about 20 seconds. Enjoy! - stevester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8What about when someone wants to use the video for something else and doesn't care about video quality? Happens to me quite often...
- aOenEz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10YouTube wasn't out years ago. And as a matter of fact, it works all over the place. What are you talking about? o_O..
- ultimathule, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Is there a conversion program available for the Mac?
- aOenEz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Pretty cool. For a second I thought it would be easier to just view the Page Info in Firefox, but alas, I just tried that and it doesn't work.
Great tutorial to whomever made it.
+Digg - modian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6What's wrong with VLC? http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
Also, an alternative to keepvid is http://javimoya.com/blog/youtube_en.php - MrC539, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5For the Mac users out there, try iSquint (http://www.isquint.org/) to convert flv to mpeg. It's meant to convert to iPod format, but it can also convert it to TV resolution if you'd like.
- ultimathule, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Uh, I'd like to have it "readily available" from my computer, not on youtube.
- wulfflower, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4(to drinkingbuddy)
People have video players like the ipod video and the creative zen vision. Thats the reason why I was interested in something like this so I can just put it onto my Zen Vision: M and play it whenever I don't have access to a computer or internet, even just so I can show it to friends when we can't get to a computer. - Sonic84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://keepvid.com/ has been a excellent tool for downloading FLVs. I just with there were more robust FLV players available for the mac :(
- Mr.Scientist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Or you could simply use these bookmarklets. Video downloads just one click away, no intermediate servers required...
http://1024k.de/bookmarklets/video-bookmarklets.html - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I haven't seen much content on Youtube that would ever be used in a situation where "presentation counts".
- pile0nades, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The flv converter app starts partially off the bottom of the screen. It works perfectly though.
- noliberalbull, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Who needs the guide? just point em to keepvid.com from here, rather than going through that site.
- jmann, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3it's simple and works! sweet! been looking for this for a long time, thanks.
- Dinosaurus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is what I use and it works great. The file size is usually about the same as the FLV video from YouTube and the quality doesn't go down too much with the recompression.
- Bonzodog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3So how do I do this with a no flash 64 bit linux system? I want to be able to download the movies in linux then watch them as avi's.
- idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Find it on Google Video (if it's on YouTube, it'll be there too) and use their download link.
- Xinareiaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah i have the greasemonkey script that puts a (DOWNLOAD) button next to anything downloadable.
but sometimes it still doesnt work...this on the other hand always works - mymnm, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1www.WeAdd.net is the best way to download youtube videos
- saudama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That would solve some of my problems. Great article. I would digg it many times if it weren't for the one-digg-per-story rule.
- gasxtreme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I use vDownloader, its about as easy as it could possibly get....... Works with Google Video, YouTube, and Grinvi....

-steve - ipodman715, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I use the greasemonkey script too. Convenient
- canucksin2006, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This couldn't have come on Digg at a more perfect time. I was just looking for a way to do this for my Powerpoint presentation. +digg
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"why would you want to encode a youtube quality video? this is like going from asf to raw avi. it's pointless."
There are some hard to find videos that can only be obtained from youtube, Ive looked all over torrent search engines for particular videos and the only places ive found some of what Ive wanted was from youtube. There are alot of old school videos that people share that you want to keep and preserve for yourself. That is one reason. - xst4t1kx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2^ because you may not otherwise have access to the video that is otherwise readily available on youtube.
- utch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.mp3buzz.net/index.php/2006/02/25/download-youtube-videos-for-ipod/
Here is a way to download and convert youtube videos for your iPod! - gmweezel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3get someone to do it for you
- moey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1His program is just a front-end for this program:
http://ffmpeg.sourceforge.net
It is a pretty powerful library, and runs on Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, and others probably. If you wanted, you could download and build it, and use it directly to convert your flv's to avi's. It will probably take some work to get it to work, though. - stevester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1jguerry, who said anything about using this kind of stuff for any kind of presentation? do you understand that sometimes people might want to use a video for personal use? no presentations, no need to show it to others...
give it up man... - nooreazy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1last time i converted a .FLV video the quality went down badly.did it for you? oh btw i converted it with "total video converter" to .avi
- cristiancont, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice trick to change extension from. flv to avi! And works at best in Mplayer!
Well if you want to convert,(to ipod) the best app is iSquint. http://www.isquint.org/. - larathydo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just a heads-up for the mac crowd: If you do end up with a *.flv (however it is spelled) file, you can simply import the file into iSquint (For Mac OS X only) and it will convert the *.flv file to either an MPEG4 or H.264 video file!
Enjoy! - gumpy5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Super ( http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html ) does this conversion very well, also. Plus it has a lot more output options.

Well, then what the hell is a personal computer for? - krinn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://videolan.org/vlc
or follow the instructions here: http://asuaf.org/~jj/blog/index.php/2006/01/08/convert-google-video-flvs-into-avi-mpg-etcin-linux/
Works in MacOSX or Linux. Make sure you have the dev tools (gcc) installed. - Merlinhoot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Download Embedded Firefox extension works for me
