- shroom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The AVI feature was implemented for linux users. You can get the same result that this link gives you by faking your user agent.
Little how-to I wrote:
First off, you need to be running firefox.
Secondly, you'll need this extension installed:
https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?application=firefox&id=59
Third, youll need this file:
http://www.shroomvalley.com/agents.xml
Open firefox, click tools, extensions. Scroll down to User Agent Switcher, and double click it to bring up the options.
Click User Agents > Import.
Browse to agents.xml, click open.
Click ok, exit the extensions window.
Now, click Tools > User Agent Switcher > Mozilla 1.6 (Debian)
Now go, and download your avi. Once your done, go back to where you selected your user agent, and click default.
Want more google video downloads? Just switch it back. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Google video already has an iPod formatted download option for every video.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3thats because they are divx.
- joshlewis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm confused. I see a little selector on almost all Google videos that allows me to download for iPod, for PSP, or for Mac/PC. Most of the Mac/PC downloads are already avi, from what I've found. Why is this needed? Is it just useful in those situations where the download isn't already available as an avi? That's pretty rare.
- yashi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Before start your download, please, rate it! Bad or Good video?
For future ranking list, top ten stats etc
Enjoy!

I think you should rate it after you have downloaded and watched it....not before... but that is just my opinion - 21.0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2what the...google already has an .avi option along with iPod ...

The quality makes me think that its 1999 again.
This is pathetic."
I'm sure you can do much better =) - sporkman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2google video has a download button on a lot of videos....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2looks like the link has changed:
http://downloadgooglevideo.cjb.net/ - oldcyborg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree with Yashi... How can you rate the video if you haven't seen it??? These are the same people who digg a story and then go read it and want to know if there is an UNDIGG function. Christamighty.......
I also didn't care for the fact that they won't tell you HOW big the avi file IS... You could be sitting around for hours just to find out somebody filmed for an all nighter....
Cyborg
Like he said, just my opinion....
OK - bubbazanetti, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Sorry.. there was a problem."
Doesn't like the maglev video just Dugg apparently. - querocarromogi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1 * 1-) Go to Google Video, and choose the video;
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Very sweet. It's interesting that the download link still points to the Google servers. Is the .avi download ability fully supported by Google and just not advertised?
- godmode, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1so does this download the original uploaded source video? or google's compressed version?
- nullmind, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2technopagan = noob
- tbfl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Very nice ! Saves time converting myself. +DIgg
- saket, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Great Job!!
Google invented it's own playlist format for it's "Google Video Player", extension ".gvp". It provides link for the AVI file.
When you press "Download" button on the individual video page, you can download the .gvp file. Save it and look inside it.

http://mediaproductreview.blogspot.com/ - xioner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No need for this... they apparently enabled downloading AVIs a day or so ago....
(yay, I was already hating my FLV player for mac) - querocarromogi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There is some bugs due regular expressions syntax, but I believe that all video may provide .avi files.
You can try saket post tip. Its the main idea behind the site. - lifeforms, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Very nice usable interface.
Are some videos uploaded without this capability? I noticed too that the maglev video ( http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=2926400396387878713 ) returned an error. - aoeu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The AVIs downloaded from Google seem to have some sort of a problem, neither WMP or BSPlayer play these. I've managed to view those with Media Player Classic. Some buggy encoding that's incompatible with the regular codecs or something.
- Flipperbw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"No need for this... they apparently enabled downloading AVIs a day or so ago...."
How? Anything I try is either .mp4 or the damn gvp. - bash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Technopagan: you're also the only one who forgets that the quality of their videos rely on the submitters, not google. you're also forgetting that the resolution is much larger than it should be, giving it that pixelatted look.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good find! Thanks!
- FiftySeven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Everythings is good, but after the download, I can't seem to play the .avi file...
Any help? - madmathmatician, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i have the same issue as "aoeu", too bad tho...
- larfus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Winamp does play avi files. As far as Winamp sucking I never had a problem with it. Although I like my VLC player and K-lite player alot better.
- sailor420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0semok, sometimes you can get through using a proxy. Grab one from http://www.publicproxyservers.com/ from the US, plug it into the proxy config in your browser, and *sometimes* it'll work. Slower, but if there's something you really want to see (like those nuke videos that were going around), it's worth it.
- weiran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I also get the above error, possibly due too excessive requests?
- superbnerd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0how do you play these files without media player class? vlc only plays sound.
- reidypeidy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Techno, are you changing the resolution back to the original? If you don't, all the videos will look crappy, they are only 320x240 rez. You have to be viewing them at the real rez to look decent. And they have to use certain codecs to keep the file size down, any web master would know this, you have to make sacrifices if you want alot of videos on your server and to reduce bandwidth.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i found a better place to download google videos
just copy the google video URL and paste it at this site:
http://keepvid.com/
and you get the download link immediately!
hope that helps :) - Semok, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So i finally CAN have a look, because original google servers won't let me have a look, it said i'm not from the US, which apears to be right.
This is worth a digg. - txtrinitytiger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"The AVIs downloaded from Google seem to have some sort of a problem, neither WMP or BSPlayer play these. I've managed to view those with Media Player Classic. Some buggy encoding that's incompatible with the regular codecs or something."
It's actually that the Google Videos have a slightly modifed headers that throws WMP out of whack. There's a program called GVideoFix that automates the process of modifying the headers so it'll play in WMP. Once the headers get modified, it's just a basic DIVX video.
You can find the program at http://www.jlrconcepts.com
There's some extra features you can unlock and right now they're doing a 50% promotion... they just started it, not sure how long the develop is goind to be doing it... kind of one of those Happy New Years things. But you don't have to pay for the features to get the converting thing to work, that's part of the freeware part of the program. - JudgeDredd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For these little clips, what is so wrong with saving it as MPEG-4? It's not like you are d/ling a feature film. Sure, I would prefer AVI as well, but does it really matter?
- phuqju, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0finally
- zonovo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cool stuff.
I'll check it - veachian64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very handy indeed.
- badayoyo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0or, you just download the google vidio file, watch the WHOLE movie once in googles video player, then you download "imtoo avi MPEG encoder" from imtoo.com and then install it and convert it with imtoo
- spacebar14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Meh -- why not just use Google Video Player? Or the iTunes format??
- sailor420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Spacebar, some of us can't use the player, because of OS or geographical location.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great, it's also the first time i've been able to see a google video from France. +digg
- tatchan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thanks, i'd like it
- reisyboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great i know how todo it with the GVP files but it just takes time. I cant play the MP4's on my PDA as its the h.264 codec, and it really is to jerky, h.263 is great though. So i have to download the avi's if i want them on there.
- ictcramps, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0COnverting Is Quite Simple
1.download the gvp file
2.open it up in notepad
3.copy the website address between url and title
4.paste this into you internet browser
5.download the avi file
6.this is most likely to be corrupt
7.so download a avi converter (winavi)
8.make sure that it is registered
9,convert the video
10.and play it in you default media player
if you have done this right it should work - theRed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0neither link is working anymore :' (
- Link92, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I didn't understand the notepad thing
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0thanks for that josh, works great :)
- l337dexter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0downloadgooglevideo.cjb.net is down, and there is not link to download an avi...
