- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+53The title of this digg submission is a bit misleading. You can't download these albums at torrentfreak, but at http://www.jamendo.com/
Good article though. 2000 creative commons licensed albums for free is impressive. - zephc, on 10/12/2007, -4/+32Download music? On the Internet? Tell me more!
- DigitAl56K, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16It is hardly their fault that there is no classical. Why not write your favorite classical artists and ask them to publish their works under a suitable creative commons license so that Jamendo can pick them up?
- sp00nz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Did you miss this section http://www.jamendo.com/en/tag/classical/
- DigitAl56K, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11I think what you meant to say is "The Internet makes it possible to download music for free illegally".
Some people *do* care that they aren't violating the wishes of the artists that they support. - DigiMaso, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8If you like an artist, buy a shirt and a ticket to their next show. CD sales don't contribute to the band as much as they do to the label. Downloading albums from torrent sites, or soulseek, is a good way to find out whether a band is good enough to spend a couple hundred bucks on for good seats the next time their touring. But I suggest buying the album anyway, it's a good autograph holder.
- Dustyb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Ever heard of paying an artist for his or her work? That would be called respect, get some. At least this is legal.
- Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Wow, there are sure many here that completely miss the point.
- joelthelion2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5errr... they host more than 800GB of music. Are you sure you want to download all that?
- TripinVA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5My favorite bands on there are The Clock and AMPM. I also rather like HYPE.
Jamendo is awesome. - mtbz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5If you want classical under creative commons, go to http://www.magnatune.com. It's practically their entire catalog, and there are some great recordings on there.
- hookid, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7This is new?
- joelthelion2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@cacoe : it wasn't founded by french people, but by french speaking people from luxemburg. There are lots of french speaking artists on the website, but they are not all from france, but also from belgium, switzerland, canada, and more.
- Phatt138, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4jrock - sure, people could just release things on their own sites. Nevertheless, having a condensed a centralized location for artists working under CC licenses is beneficial to everyone in the equation. As the consumers, we get to browse a veritable library of free (and mostly unheard!) work, and the artists can share their mutual recognition as a way of drawing interest towards others in their field. They don't have to pay for file hosting hosting or page design (remember, not every musician is also a technophile - though I'm certain that many of these are), and they get their names out there.
Good stuff.

Happy Holidays, people! - projektmayhem, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6fantastic site. i've just been trawling through downloading strange french industrial music :)
- GeorgeXIV, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Thats the point.. you get to discover new artists that arent mainstream.
Personally not finding that much in English at the moment but its a French site so i won't complain. - kiantech, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4good I need free music for my video yearbook class because my teacher thinks the RIAA is going to sue us.
I was like the RIAA suing a school is really bad PR, but hey so is suing an old lady who doesn't own a computer. - bemaniso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3gotta love the french rap... sounds funny
- joelthelion2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The lyrics of the french rappers on jamendo are great, really different from their american counterparts.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You fail to see the difference between p2p-ing music produced by major labels (a practice which is, in most cases, at least in the "grey area" of the legal system or even illegal) and downloading music which was made available for free under a libre license. In the first case, the artists are already paid off by the publisher, in the second case, the unsigned artists earned nothing at all. So I think it's nothing wrong about donating money to Jamendo artists, thanking them for their work, because they get the full amount of money you pay them, no RIAA, no greedy majors (who, for example, take the lion's half of the money you pay for CDs or drmed downloads to do marketing for Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake, the artists get relatively low amounts of money), no nothing. Just you and the artist.
- utdiscant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Great site, and a lot of cool new electronica. Might be old, but i have never seen it.
- dj_sea2005, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For a person that likes the production quality and style of rap music, but cant stand the lyrics. Rap in any language other than english is great to listen to.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2word, apart from the last sentence ;)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I agree that a centralized location is needed, but there's already one. It's called archive.org. What I want is a centralized location to sift through CC licensed music and organize it by popularity and quality... allowing the cream to rise to the top.
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2dooraque is right - I just noticed the donate-to-artist button, it's a nice idea - It's be great if something like this took of, if people actually donated, I see no reason why such a business-model wouldn't work. Artists would probably make far more money, rather than paying a record label, who give a small percentage to the artist.
The initial start-up would be hard though - You'd need to be "good" before (most) people would donate, but the more people donate, the better you'll be. Sort of like the chicken-or-the-egg thing, unfortunately the egg comes first (The egg representing money)..
- Ben - Double6, on 07/06/2009, -0/+1Double6project (lounge-chillout-instrumental) free album download: http://www.jamendo.com/en/album/46358?refuid=63398 ... ...Jabaro (ambient) free album download: http://www.jamendo.com/en/album/46278?refuid=63398 ... ...support our music!
- capiCrimm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Does that entail also digging them up so they can read the letter?
- Persol2point0, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4"Some people *do* care that they aren't violating the wishes of the artists that they support."
I don't download the music of any -artist- who complains about it. (I also never go see them a venue though.) - GjooGjoob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They do have tags to let you refine your searches to fit your taste and whatnot. Plus, it's always fun finding new artists :D
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Dustyb, the only way of "paying an artist for his or her work" is going to his or her show. Recording artists earn almost nothing from CD sales.
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Ever heard of paying an artist for his or her work?"... The site isn't charging either, so I fail to really see the difference..
"or private tracker u can get any album you want any time" ..why would you need to be on a private tracker to get any album you want? There'll be a far wider range of albums on public trackers (Seeing as how private trackers *tend* to be more nichéd)
Anyway, there seems to be some decent music on this site, my only problem with the site so far is the lack of 1) "Simlar Artists" suggestions, 2) A download link on the music player window, so I have to stay on the same page if I like a band (And can't prod around the rest of the site while I listen to one band)
- Ben - joelthelion2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Phatt : I've been following the website for some time now, and most of the musician's there are by no way technophiles, just barely computer literate, some even have friends help them upload the music. So I agree 100%, this kind of websites is really useful since it allows musicians to share their music.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The problem with this site... it focuses on quantity rather than quality. I can find hundreds of thousands of CC licensed albums via google. I want to find the gems in the rough. Jamendo does nothing to sift through the mountains of netlabel/cc music.
- kraemer007, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I really don't want to browse around their web page. They should have one "big ass torrent" to let me download a giant collection of songs and the listen/browse them on my machine....
- tristar2831, on 09/20/2008, -0/+0You can try the mp3downloadnet software. That's where I get my songs from.
http://cheapmusicdownloads.wordpress.com/ - xGORDOx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This isn't anything new. Go check out: www.archive.org
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Try www.iCompositions.com instead. There's some really good free music there, and the musicians tend to be more adventurous.
- bluecc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0What are you talking about?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Artist shouldn't sign contracts with the majors.
- Jerim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0The site design isn't quite ready for the mainstream market. The tags are just unnecessarily cluttered, and previewing the songs is kind of jittery. Also, some of the music isn't categorized correctly. Please link to the actual site where you can get started. Don't link to some article that discusses the main site, requiring the reader to click yet again to get to the actual site. Other than that, it is a good conecpt.
- farazyashar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1the site could use a makeover...
- mortxcore, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2This is really neat, I can't wait to explore.
I like it because you can find out about all these great non-mainstream artists. D: - SpackAdam, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Merry Christmas to me!
- Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Magnatune is based in the US and kinda similar. Link is above.
- DenDen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"The title of this digg submission is a bit misleading."
And that's why I called it spam! - Sethwm2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0 The artists should work with torrent web sites. Torrents have won the war and they are not going anywhere. It is useless for the media companies to fight anymore. They are spending a lot of money fighting
- EXreaction, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Bookmarked to look into so more after users on digg forget about it! :D
(I can imagine the site getting pretty slow)
Very awesome find. - Harbinger67, on 10/12/2007, -10/+6How's the weather up there on your pedestal DigitAl56K?
- donjaime, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Download anything for free at: the internet
- Snyder, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2It looks like an interesting site, but it's nothing new. To name the ones I've used over the years, I started with IUMA in '98 (R.I.P. 1993-2001) then went to Mp3.com in '99 (R.I.P. 1998-2001). When MP3.com died, I moved to Soundclick.com (1997-current)
